Chapter 4

Autor: Raine Morrow
I ignored all of it and focused on my work.

After lunch, Vincent didn't come back right away.

I checked social media and saw his latest post.

He'd tagged himself at a high-end mall downtown.

The photo showed off an expensive suit and watch.

The caption was one big flex:

[Lucky to have a boss who mentors me and always has my back!]

Every word was a flex.

He wanted everyone to know Peyton had his back and treated him differently.

He wanted everyone to know he was about to land a major deal and lock down a full-time offer.

I muted his account without a second thought.

A little after four, Vincent and Peyton came back to the office together.

Vincent showed up in his new suit, looking way too pleased with himself.

He walked straight to my desk and turned around.

"Mr. Alford, what do you think of the burgundy? Too much for meeting the client?"

Before I could answer, Peyton jumped in.

"He's new and nervous about handling a deal this big for the first time. I just helped him pick out a suit so he'd look professional. Don't make it weird."

I looked at them and said nothing.

Then I grabbed the printed proposal and my document folder and stood.

"It's almost time. Let's go wait for Mr. Parker downstairs at Nova Corp."

When we got to Nova Corp, Benjamin and his team were just coming downstairs.

Vincent immediately rushed ahead of me with a polished smile.

"Mr. Parker, hi! I'm Vincent Tate, and I'm in charge of this project.

"I've got everything set for today. Veya AI booked us a private room overlooking the lake, and I had the menu planned around your preferences. I'm sure you'll love it."

He sounded completely confident, like the deal was already his.

Benjamin paused, then looked at me, confused.

I'd handled everything with Benjamin up to this point, so of course he was confused when someone else suddenly took over right before we signed.

I didn't explain.

I exchanged a few polite words with him and led him to the car.

Once we were inside, Benjamin smiled and got straight to business.

"Mr. Alford, I've gone over the brand upgrade proposal you've spent the last six months working on several times.

"I really like the concept and direction. As long as dinner goes smoothly tonight, we'll sign the contract on the spot."

I was about to answer when Vincent jumped in.

"Mr. Parker, I actually used AI to help Mr. Alford polish some of the key ideas in the proposal!"

I just smiled and let him talk.

A flicker of annoyance crossed Benjamin's face, but he didn't call him out.

He gave a stiff laugh and stayed quiet for the rest of the ride.

Before long, we reached the restaurant.

The second the car stopped, Vincent jumped out first.

He hurried ahead, looking way too smug, and led Benjamin straight to the front desk.

He slapped a hand on the counter.

"Hi, I'm Vincent Tate. I reserved a VIP lake-view room for eight yesterday. Show us to the room."

The hostess paused and checked the system.

Then she checked the reservation book.

After nearly five minutes, she finally looked up with a polite smile.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Tate, but we don't have a reservation under your name."

People quickly tracked down Sophie's account from the photo. Her comments flooded with people telling her Vincent was cheating on her.I watched the internet turn on them, smiled, and put my phone away. They'd put me through the same online hate in my last life. This time, I was giving them a taste of their own medicine.***The next morning, not long after I got to work, security came over."There's a girl here to see you. She says she's Vincent's girlfriend, Sophie."I told them to let her in.Sophie stopped beside my desk, looking grim. She gripped her phone so hard her knuckles turned white."What do you need?"She bit her lip, her voice a little hoarse."I... I saw the video you posted. I need to know if it's all true."Is Vincent really sleeping with your company's VP? Did he really use my money to buy her stuff?"I didn't answer.I just showed her all the evidence I had. There were records of Vincent and Peyton's hotel stays on the exact days he'd told Sophie he

The police arrived soon after. After confirming the embezzlement evidence, they took Peyton away for questioning. As the officers escorted her out, she was still cursing at Vincent, glaring at him like she wanted to rip him apart. Not long after, HR posted a second announcement.[Following an internal review, intern Vincent Tate is terminated for serious misconduct, spreading malicious rumors about a colleague, and deliberately damaging the company's reputation. He will not be eligible for rehire.][Former Vice President Peyton Welch is terminated after conclusive evidence of embezzlement was uncovered. I just smiled and said nothing.Back at my desk, I organized the evidence proving Peyton had embezzled company funds and emailed it to Mr. Klein.I'd found the same evidence in my last life.Back then, I'd buried it because I still had feelings for her.Not this time.Half an hour later, Peyton and Vincent walked out of Mr. Klein's office looking wrecked.Moments later, HR dropped an announcement in the company group chat.[Following an internal review, Vice President Peyton Welch was found to have abused her authority by handing a major account to an intern who had not yet earned a full-time position.][Her favoritism nearly cost the company the deal. He will not be offered a full-time position.]The whole company exploded.

As I reached the break room, I heard Vincent complaining.Several coworkers had gathered around, handing him tissues and trying to comfort him."Vincent, what happened? Did the deal fall through? Did Mr. Alford chew you out?""I knew it. Mr. Alford already had it out for him. With Vincent taking over such a big project, of course he'd make things difficult."Vincent cursed under his breath, breathing hard with anger."Mr. Alford knew AI couldn't make reservations and never told me. Then he stole all the credit and even got me kicked out..."I heard the only reason he landed the contract was that he was hooking up with Mr. Parker's assistant. How am I supposed to compete with that?"The second he finished, Peyton walked over, looking pissed."Andy went way too far this time. He didn't give a new hire any chance at all. I'll talk to HR and have half his project bonus given to Vincent as compensation. We can't let a new employee get treated like this."The coworkers around him im
