Valeria's POV

"I'm sorry, what?"

"Would you marry my uncle," Belle repeated, like I hadn't heard her correctly the first time. "It's not a hard question."

"Belle." Tyrone's voice came out rough. "That's not... you can't just ask people that."

"Why not?" She asked.

"Because it's not how it works," He said.

"Grandma says you need to settle down with someone," Belle said. "You already like Dr. Val, you just pretend you don't."

"I don't pretend anything," he said.

"Yes you do," Belle turned

Valeria's POV I read the contract three times before I let myself react to any of it. The kitchen light buzzed over my head, my sandwich long abandoned, cold coffee at my elbow that I kept reaching for out of habit and not actually drinking. It was twelve pages with numbered clauses. One year marriage. Public appearances as required. Separate bedrooms with separate finances except for agreed joint expenses. No romantic expectations and no physical intimacy required. Tyrone retains full decision-making on Belle’s custody and medical care unless he asks for input. In exchange: Yates Foundation covers the full shortfall for St. Marie’s Pediatric Cardiac Institute for the next three fiscal years. Funding begins the day the marriage license is filed. Exit clause available after twelve months with thirty days’ notice. All public statements coordinated through counsel. I read it twice, then a third time. I'd lying to a judge, to the board, to Belle in some ways. It felt wrong on my p

I've seen it like six times." Tyrone’s ears went a little red. He looked at the wall, then at the floor. "She's so pretty," Belle continued. "She already makes you behave. Why wouldn't you just marry my favorite doctor so that we can just live together and it'll be easy." "Belle," he said carefully, "I think it's time you got back to your room." "I'm being serious." She said firmly. "I know you are, that's the probl

Valeria's POV The monitor flatlined for three full seconds before the rhythm came back.“V-fib,” I snapped. “Charge to two hundred. Clear.”The paddles hit and body jerked. The line spiked, then settled into a shaky but usable beat.“Sinus is weak, but it’s there.” I kept my eyes on the screen. “Give me another milligram of epi. We’re not losing her on the table.”Dr. Carol moved fast on the meds. The scrub nurse already had the next suture ready. Blood soaked through the third set of sponges. The child’s chest was open, the repair on the mitral valve more complicated than the scans had promised. Congenital defects never followed the textbook when you needed them to.“Pressure’s climbing,” Carol said. “Seventy over forty.”“Good enough," I said. "Close the chest. Slow and clean. I want every stitch perfect.”Forty-two minutes later I stepped back from the table, gloves sticky, mask damp against my face. The girl was stable. Transfer to PICU was already rolling. I stripped the gown, t

Valeria's POV“Val, if you don’t put that phone down and help me with these plates, I swear I’m going to make you sit next to Theo.”Ava’s voice cut straight through the kitchen noise. I looked up from the text I’d been reading and found my little sister glaring at me like I’d committed a federal crime.“I’m helping,” I said.“You’re standing there smiling at your phone," she said flatly. "That’s not helping.”"Lauren just texted," I flipped the screen toward her. “She says tell Aiden she loves him and she wants an actual postcard, not a picture.”"Tell her he won't even remember to buy a stamp," Ava snatched a stack of plates from the counter. “He’s been walking around all week like he’s already halfway to the airport.”"Valeria," Mom walked in carrying a huge bowl of salad and set it down with a soft thud. “Aiden’s in the backyard, you might want to go talk to him. Spencer, can you...”“Already on it,” Uncle Spence called from the other room. I found Aiden in the backyard, sitting

The kitchen smelled like coffee and toast.I stood at the counter in one of Spencer’s old shirts, stretched over the curve of my belly, flipping eggs while the twins argued at the table like the fate of the world depended on a guess.“I know it’s a girl,” Valeria said.“You don’t know anything,” Aiden shot back. “You’re just saying that because you want another person who’ll sit still for your drawings.”“I’m the one who guessed Mom was pregnant," she said."You just got lucky," Aiden said. "It doesn't mean you're right. He’s a boy and he’s going to play soccer with me.”Valeria rolled her eyes so hard I heard it. “It’s not even born yet, you don't know what it likes.""I know what I like," He said. "That's enough.""That's not how genetics works," her voice was flat."You don't know how genetics works either."Spencer coming in behind me, one hand landing warm on my hip, the other reaching for my left hand, which he brought up and pressed a kiss to right over the ring."Good morning,

Scarlett's POVSage would not stop fussing with the veil.“If you touch it one more time I’m pinning your hands to the chair,” I said, with one bobby pin left between my teeth and Sage's hair half-pinned.“It’s crooked," She said."It's not crooked," I said. "I have a medical degree, Sage. I know how to make hair symmetrical.""A medical degree in surgery," she said. "Not cosmetology.""It's the same hands," I said, and jabbed the pin in a little harder than necessary, and she yelped, and I grinned at her in the mirror. "See? Perfectly straight now that you're not moving."She caught my eye in the mirror and laughed, a little watery. "I can't believe I'm doing this," she said."You've had four months to believe it." I said."It still hit me about ten minutes ago that I'm about to walk out there and marry my almost sister-in-law best friend," she said. "Which somehow makes him my brother-in-law and my husband at the same time, and I genuinely don't know what to call him at Thanksgivin
