Chapter 3

Author: Candy Sweetie
Back in my room, I got a call from my father.

The moment the video connected, I saw how much more gray had come into his hair.

"My darling girl," he said. "Is Michele good to you? Are you happy these days?"

My throat tightened, and tears welled up. "Papa, I miss you so much..."

The same father who'd once thrown me out of the house now looked at me with nothing but heartbreak in his eyes.

"This will always be your home," he said with a sigh. "Hold on one more night. I'll send someone for you tomorrow."

After the call ended, regret and guilt tore at me until I couldn't sleep.

I opened a drawer and destroyed every photo of the two of us, every keepsake he'd ever given me. On the windowsill, I tore out the red rose bush he'd given me, roots and all.

Starting tomorrow, this would never be my home again.

I finally drifted off just as the sky was starting to lighten, and by the time I woke, the living room already had a family in it.

Michele and Rita sat at the breakfast table, with Antonio between them.

It was the perfect family portrait, and I was the stain on it.

The sound of my footsteps on the stairs cut the scene short. Michele shot to his feet, an anxious, placating smile on his face.

"Mae, don't get the wrong idea. This is our adopted son, Antonio. I just brought him home. Rita's the one he's closest to, so she's staying a few days to help out."

Beside him, Antonio suddenly grabbed for both Michele's and Rita's hands. "I want Mommy and Daddy to sleep with me every night."

Rita flashed me a smile with a flicker of triumph in it. "Sorry, Mae. Antonio doesn't sleep well in a new place. He needs me close by. You don't mind, do you?"

I wasn't going to mind anything, not anymore, because I was about to leave this place for good.

This whole hollow performance was about to end.

In the silence that followed, Michele's face went pale. His mouth opened, then closed without a word.

Under three sets of watching eyes, I sat down, kept my voice as light and steady as I could, and said, "Of course I don't mind. Let's have breakfast."

Rita slid a plate of pasta toward me. "I made it myself; try it. I heard seafood's your favorite."

She smiled and winked at me. "Make sure you finish it all."

Pale pink shrimp swam in a creamy sauce, flecked with chopped parsley. The smell alone turned my stomach.

I looked up, and in the face of Michele's evasive eyes, asked calmly, "You told her I like shrimp?"

He knew. He knew exactly what he was doing.

I'd been allergic to shellfish my whole life. One shrimp and my throat would swell. Three, and I'd need an ambulance.

Ever since I'd moved into this house, Michele had reminded the kitchen staff more than once. One year, for my birthday dinner, he'd personally had every shellfish dish struck from the menu.

The smile on Rita's face froze, then crumpled, leaving her looking wronged and innocent.

She blinked, her lashes going wet. "I... I really didn't know. Michele never told me. I'm sorry, I just wanted to make you happy..."

Michele's brow furrowed, his expression darkening. He gently soothed Rita and coaxed her back into her seat.

The look he turned on me was full of offended impatience.

"Rita's been up since dawn working on this." His voice dropped, like he was holding back real anger. "She didn't know about your allergy. You could have just told her. What's that look on your face for?"

At the reception, Alex and I were cutting the cake together. His aide hurried over and murmured something into Alex's ear.Alex's brow creased slightly, then he turned to me with a smile. "A small matter. I'll take care of it."He was gone for a few minutes, and when he came back, he was holding a rolled parchment letter, the kind used only for internal family correspondence, sealed with the crest of the DeLuca famiglia."The Corleone famiglia has just been taken over by a rival family," he said, handing me the sealed letter. "Michele's people have been neutralized too."While Michele's been spending every resource he has looking for you, he let the family's affairs slide. A rival family took advantage of it. Three of the Corleone docks and two of their casinos are already in enemy hands."I unfolded the letter. It laid out everything happening to the Corleone famiglia now.Alex's fingers traced lightly along the edge of the letter. "The rival family found out about your history

The ceremony was held on the lawn behind the estate. The rows of chairs were filled with friends of the Bagarella famiglia.Alex stood at the far end of an arch woven from white roses, the sun behind him gilding his outline in warm gold.I walked toward him on my father's arm, step by step. This time I wasn't a runaway bride sneaking off in secret. I was walking this aisle surrounded by everyone's blessing. When my father placed my hand in Alex's, he said in a low voice, "I'm giving you the best daughter I have. If you ever let her come to harm, I've got more than one gun in the Bagarella famiglia."Alex nodded solemnly. "I promise. I'll keep her safe."I tightened my grip on his hand and felt the faint dampness on his fingers. So he was nervous too.Just as the priest reached the blessing and I opened my mouth to say "I do," a commotion broke out at the edge of the lawn."Mae." A hoarse voice cut through the air from outside.Everyone turned to look. Michele stood between tw

Mae's POVI woke in the villa on the shore of Lake Colmo, sunlight falling across my pillow through white gauze curtains. It was nothing like the Corleone famiglia's dark, oppressive mansion. Everything here was bright and warm, and every breath of air carried the taste of freedom. My fiance, my childhood sweetheart, Alex DeLuca, was in the next room over. He'd stayed up until dawn the night before, working on nothing but our wedding.I'd come back to my family in such a rush that we only had a week to plan the wedding, and for that whole week, Alex hadn't gone to bed before sunrise a single time.I rolled over, and my phone lit up.A photo filled the screen: Michele, standing outside the gates of my family's estate, soaked to the bone.Underneath it, Alex had written: [He's here, but don't worry, I won't let him in. All you need to do is be the most beautiful bride there's ever been, and walk toward me.]I smiled and set the phone face-down.Four years ago, when I'd taken of

Matteo's voice broke the suffocating silence. "Don, we just got word. Mae's back with the Bagarella famiglia. In three days, she's... she's set to marry Alex DeLuca, Don of the DeLuca famiglia.""What..." Michele's voice came out like sandpaper. "That's impossible. Why would she, why would she leave me..."It's Rita. She's the one who's been hurting Mae this whole time." He suddenly looked up, his expression turning dark and frightening. "Where's Rita right now?""In the basement room, held there like you ordered."When Michele burst into the basement, Rita was curled up on the iron cot in the corner. She lifted her head at the sound of his footsteps, her face a mix of fear and hope. "Michele! Will you let me out? I'm sorry… so sorry..."Michele crossed the room and gripped her chin in one hand."I saw those texts! And you fed her the shrimp pasta on purpose!"Tears welled up in her eyes, wetting her lashes, making her look pitiful."I did... but it was because I love you!

"And the business with the marriage certificate. How had she lost it? Had she found something out? How exactly had she... how had she lost our child..." Michele's voice trailed off.On the other end of the line, Mattoe hesitated. "Don, Rita keeps trying to reach you. She says Antonio has a fever that won't break...""If he's sick, call a doctor!" Michele slammed his hand on the desk. "Finding Mae comes before anything else!"But a full week passed with nothing: no record of her leaving the country, no hotel check-ins, no contact with any friends. His informants in other states all came back empty. Not a single trace of Mae.That night, Michele sat alone in his study, holding the marriage certificate Mae had torn apart. He'd pieced it back together. The memories came flooding back like a tide.Four years ago, when Mae had left with him, the Don of the Bagarella famiglia, her father, had pointed a finger at Michele's face. "You don't deserve my daughter."Mae had stepped between

Third-Person POVAt the hospital, Michele sat beside Rita's bed, gripped by an inexplicable unease.Even as Rita called his name again and again, he didn't seem to hear her."Michele," she said weakly, lifting her arm to show him the bandage wrapped around it. "My arm hurts so much... Don't blame Mae. She's just jealous of me..."Matteo burst through the door, his face bone white, and leaned down to murmur urgently in Michele's ear. "Don, the lady... she's gone. She was taken from the villa this morning, covered in blood. And the baby... we heard the baby didn't make it."Michele shot to his feet, knocking his chair to the floor. All the color drained from his face. "What baby?"Matteo lowered his head. "By the time our people got there, she'd already been taken. We traced her to the hospital she was brought to and checked her records. She was pregnant, almost two months along. But this morning... she lost the baby."Rita's crying rose up behind him, but Michele no longer h
