For a long moment, all Adrian could do was stare.

Maya’s eyes—once gold, soft and alive—now burned a deep crimson. The glow wasn’t just light. It pulsed, almost like a heartbeat, syncing with the hum of the machines around them.

“Maya…” he whispered. “Can you hear me?”

Her expression was blank—then, slowly, she smiled.

But it wasn’t her smile.

The sound of static filled the room, crawling across the walls, as her voice layered—hers and something else—like two frequencies overlapping.

“You shouldn’t have followed me, Adrian.”

He froze. “That’s not you talking.”

Her head tilted slightly. “Isn’t it?”

Then, just for an instant, the red faded. Her real voice broke through, trembling. “Adrian, I—” She clutched her chest, gasping. “I can feel it inside me. It’s trying to—”

Her body convulsed. Sparks shot from the monitors. The red light flared again, flooding the control room.

Adrian grabbed her shoulders. “Maya! Stay with me!”
