I don't know how long I lay there for, practically bleeding out in the now dark atmosphere. It was pitiful how no one had noticed my body yet.

No ambulance like I expected. No press taking photos or police officers marking X as the spot of a crime scene. No frightened screams.

Just hollow silence and crickets.

The next time my eyes fluttered open, I looked up. There was a bleak light shining above me, and like an alien spacecraft, it sucked my soul—an out-of-body experience.

I’d resigned to my ill fate at this point and with eyes shut, I just let myself get carried away by the wind or maybe an unseen force but the pull was like a magnet on something metallic.

With my soul halfway through the air and a bit closer to the light, there was a subtle shift in the atmosphere.

Dark energy swirled around me. A gasp left my lips sharply when it engulfed me as though trying to possess me. My lashes fluttered open and the sight before me had my bones frozen to the core.

What was this?

Lucifer?

Had I finally transcended to heaven? I couldn't even call those flaming blue eyes satan’s or the sharp jawline or half his face partially hidden by a Steele mask and dark thick hair falling over his eyes.

His intent stare sent chills through my spine and once I realized I was in his arms, practically hanging mid-air like a cyclone, my heart tripped in fright.

“Who..who are you?” I squirmed, trepidation glaring in my eyes.

I thought I would be dead and gone to hell, not dead and hanging in the air with a beautiful devil.

He cocked his head sideways, hair falling along to shield his eyes “Your damnation”

My heart skipped, lips trembling.“Are you sending me to hell?”

“Not yet,” His voice rumbled lowly, aura too dark for me to grasp. “I can grant you a second chance only if you agree to play my games”

His hand flattened along my waistline and I flinched out of my mind when his touch burned and not in a good way, more like a deadly warning, and looking up to his face, his scowl had deepened.

I fidgeted. I needed to decide as it seemed he was growing impatient. A second chance? I could go back home and make everything right again, make Edna and Brandon pay.

Slowly my head shook, eyes welling with tears. “Please…” I begged.

“Took you long to decide.” He sounded colder now, his deep-rich bizarre accent gutting me.

“It’s only been a minute…”

The words hadn't fully left my tongue when a bluntly sharp object drove into my back. My pupils dilated, and my mind went blank with excruciating pain for a few seconds.

His lips curved into something slow and cruel. “It's only going to hurt for a while. You won't feel it once you are up”

Darkness dragged me under. Like a withered flower, my hands dropped to my side and I went limp against this god.

“Hey…”

“Is she…alive?”

“Alive? We are all dead here, she probably just passed out from shock”

“Shock? If we are ghosts…” There was a pause, then “Do ghosts feel shock?”

A snort followed in response.

Those voices, they were unfamiliar. My vision blurred for a second. Then something poked my side, probably a gentle kick. Blinking once, twice, the obsidian roofing came into clearer view.

“Where was I?” I thought out loud and gradually sat up.

Then a hand waved in my face, dragging my gaze to the strange face now staring down at me. My chest burped, a hiccup leaving my lips and I immediately clasped a hand over my mouth, eyes wide with mortification.

“Yeah, she’s alive”

Someone said from behind this strange lady with pixie cut hair and lots of ring piercings on her ears and nostrils.

“She seems like a rich girl” she finally spoke, her hand reaching up to touch my hair. “Silk hair”

I flinched and swatted her hands off. “Don’t touch me. Who are you?”

The lady sighed, getting up to her feet with one hand scratching the back of her neck. “I told ya, rich kids and high egos”

Wait, where was this place? Where am I? Where was that beautiful devil? So many questions yet my head spun in circles without an answer.

I shook my head, hand clasping my head as I tried to get my thoughts straight. He said a second chance and I expected to be back in my body, finally breathing again and maybe getting rushed to the hospital—Not this.

This…slowly my gaze darted around me, finally taking in my environment. It was a dimly lit room with dark ashmarble walls, smooth and edged. The air here had a weird kind of stench, something thick and acidic. The lights flickered on and off, a subtle reminder of the unsteady bulb back in my hotel room.

The room was devoid of color and there were people. About eighteen of them. Some crouched down against walls and rocked their legs, some sat on benches and stared at nothing in particular, and a few of them dozed off.

Except for these two people still right in front of me. The chubby guy next to this lady waved at me, a slow smile swelling his cheeks.

The lady rolled her eyes with an insufferable snort when I just sat there staring dead at them.

“Let her be, Rick.” She turned away and moved back to the bench where she plumped herself back on, hands dragging up her face and remaining there.

The guy—Rick, walked away too without uttering another word to me and I watched him sit next to her, head falling backwards to rest on the wall with a soft thud.

What was wrong with the people here? Everyone was weird.

I swallowed, slowly rising to my feet as I ran a frantic hand over my body for injuries. There were no stab wounds on my wrist, no broken skull, nor did I have crooked or broken limbs.

And I had a heartbeat also, which was thumping hard against my chest.

Was I truly alive? Did he really grant me a second chance?

Looking over my shoulder, I noticed the floor-to-ceiling window for the first time. Through the spotless glass, the city was fogged over, dark without electricity.

My legs moved before I could stop myself. I needed to know where the hell I woke up in and who these strange people around me were.

Curiosity spiked in my blood and pressed extra pressure to my feet. Chin raised high in false confidence because the moment I leaned against the glass and glanced down, my legs froze with fear.

They looked tiny at first, like hordes of ants moving about until the fog cleared down there and those things became more visible.

They weren't humans.

Those were monsters with half-human bodies and deformed heads. One growled and its jaws elongated as though it were smiling.

My chest began to heave in a frantic rhythm, a series of hiccups after hiccups escaping my chest when that thing looked up and our gazes locked.

I managed to force a foot back in an attempt to flee but ended up tripping on my heels clumsily and the next minute my butt had painstakingly hit the ground.

A scream immediately burst through my chest, piercing and glass-cracking.

The ground was hard and cruelly cold beneath the sole of my feet as I hurried out of the four walls of that devilish enclosure. It seemed like a cult. A cult with unwell people and I wanted no part of it, I wanted no part in whatever those men just threw me in. My skin crawled with disgust at being licked as I ran into the night, my head whipping back occasionally to be sure I wasn't being pursued and I didn't stop looking behind me until I tripped on my own foot and tumbled down rough grounds, my body hitting with reckless abandon against several road bumps. Pain radiated through me and an agonizing scream left my lips, the birds in nearby trees flapping away. It was as though the wind held my weight and was effortlessly letting me roll over and I only stopped when my body lodged against a large rock. I lay there for a couple of moments sobbing from both ache and dizziness that followed. I was furious at myself for ever begging that god for a second chance and equally furi

  • Survive Me, Darling   TWENTY-EIGHT: Thirty shevaris.

All of a sudden they began chanting my name. “Ophelia! Call her out!” “Who is Ophelia?” The women whispered amongst themselves with genuine curiosity. I gradually lifted my face from where it was buried in my lap, a forlorn glint in my eyes as I turned from side to side in confusion. It couldn't be me they were calling, right? I had to have a namesake… The man who made the ‘fresh one’ comment suddenly crowded me, his shadow falling over my face as I stared up at him. “Aren’t you Ophelia, eh?” I wanted to shake my head in dismissal, tell him he had the wrong person but it was too late. He caught my wrist and tossed me out into the lion’s den. They weren't smiling now, no, they were glaring at me with straight faces, the kind you’d see only in horror films, the kind that was capable enough to randomly flash before your eyes in the worst possible moments. I heard my heart racing fast, weren't they all laughing just now? My vision twisted and spun under the women’s dar

OPHELIA.I had just puked water in his face. I gaped at him with a mortified expression, scared he’d react with irritation or try to dip himself to wash up but instead, he was cupping my soaked face, his palm cold beneath my warm skin. “Hey.” He stared at me with intent, it was as though he could read right through me.He didn't have to be here and I wished he were far away. I needed to breathe. I couldn't be this confused at this early stage in a world I hadn't yet understood. He was hard to comprehend and I should be caring about my survival; not whatever this was.“I’m sorry” I said quickly. “For throwing up in your face” He simply stared at me.“Thank…” A loud wail behind us cut my appreciation off. The water rippled as I turned around to see the boy I’d saved being pulled by the hair into an iron-caged carriage. What was happening? There were men in dark steel masks and an outfit that could pass for what people wore in the gothic eighties.I took in my environment. It wasn't

Ophelia was a stubborn woman and I knew exactly how to tame her if I wanted.I pulled her weight into my chest just in time before a boulder could drop on her. Despite my firm hold, she was still clumsy enough to drag us to the ground as our bodies rolled down the smooth rock into a dark enclosure. I made sure to keep my palm pressed to the back of her head, the other woven around her midriff in firm protectiveness. We were now out of sight and away from the chaos out there.Legs trampled out there in a vicious helter-skelter run. Someone got impaled on a rusty iron jutting out from a broken crack in the wall, and warm liquid gushed to the ground.Ophelia‘s head dug into my chest. She was breathing hard and fast, with her body pressed right on top of me. Fuck, I think I slammed my ribs a second time. She scrambled up from me and hurriedly began to fix her hair, her face flushed red.“We have to go get the others.” She didn’t look at me when she said that. The screams out there grew ug

LUCAN. “Are you okay?” I was trying hard to ignore the commotion rolling out behind me, until her voice filled my chest, loud and insufferable. From the corner of my eye, I watched her wipe the dark red liquid trickling down that guy’s nostrils, concern flashing low on her face. She complained earlier of losing someone, the ache was fucking visible in her pale eyes that were already wrinkling at the sides in just some hours since last night’s madness, and yet, there she was curdling up to someone else. He muttered something low to her as her hand slowly reached to tug her sleeve down her wrist before her lips moved in a quivering ‘Thanks’ Concern brewed care which eventually sprouts love. Love itself was a cruel weakness that shouldn’t matter in a world like this but there she was, showing everyone around her the one weapon that could ruin her. Despite how much I wanted to turn a blind eye to her— I knew I'd still see her. Earlier, she’d pushed my buttons and made me snap a

  • Survive Me, Darling   TWENTY-FOUR: Tired and sick.

“Five minutes to vacate the mansion.” The voice filtered into my subconsciousness as I moved down the stairs in black leather pants, a tight-fitted combat jacket, and my hair up in a tight bun. I easily blended with the moving crowd as we walked out, while I made every possible effort to avoid Lucan. My traitorous mind did a vivid flashback to an hour ago when he’d suddenly pulled away once we were in the mansion and then I recalled how he stepped three feet away from me, no emotions leaking through him. Except I, who was a shivering mess with my lips still pulsing and every part of me feeling charged. “You’ll catch a cold if you don't get a warm bath” That was the only thing he'd said to me before walking away. I watched him disappear up the stairs as anger and an awakening need began a war in my chest. How I hated him. I hated the level of his audaciousness. I hated how he felt it was easy to jump on me and assert his dominance, something I never let anyone

Ophelia. For a moment everyone stood back, watching as the realism of this game crashed down on us. The timer had begun ticking and looking over my shoulder at it— I saw it read nine minutes and thirty seconds. No one was moving yet and the time didn't care to pause along with us. There w

“Hey, keep it down. I froze on that spot, a sudden hiccup leaving my chest as his words bounced off in wave signals against my skull. From afar, thunder rumbled and lightning struck across the walls in a flash.
