Chapter 4

Author: Flying Fish
I wiped my nose and froze when I saw the dark blood on my hand. The venom had spread through my whole body.

Mom hurriedly handed me a tissue. "What's happening? Why is it black?"

A wave of sadness rose in me. "If I died one day, would you be sad?"

Dad shot me a hard look. "What nonsense is that?"

Mom scolded me too. "Clara, don't say such awful things. You're perfectly healthy. How could you die? If you keep this up, we're going to be angry."

The room fell into a heavy silence after that.

Ethan suddenly spoke up. "Mom always does this. She loves to act in front of us so we'll pity her."

Then, he grabbed Grace's hand. "Grace never does that. She's my favorite."

I felt another dull ache in my heart. I stepped forward, took Ethan's hand, and placed it in Grace's.

"Ethan, haven't you always wanted Grace to be your mom? I'm saying yes today. From now on, Grace is your mother."

His eyes lit up. "Really? Can I really call her 'Mom'?"

I nodded with a smile.

He kissed my cheek, then threw himself into Grace's arms and shouted, "Mom! From now on, you're my mom!"

The warmth on my cheek made me sink to rock bottom.

It was the first time Ethan had ever kissed me in all these years. He always said men and women shouldn't be too close, even though I was his mother. Yet, he never pushed Grace away.

They looked every bit the perfect family. I quietly slipped out and closed the door behind me. I wanted to keep whatever time I had left for myself.

I hadn't gone far before I felt the room tilt beneath me. My hands and feet stopped listening to me, and I hit the ground hard.

When I woke up, I was lying in a hospital bed and hooked up to tubes.

A new nurse with reddened eyes told me my condition was critical, and I had less than two hours left. She asked if I wanted her to call my family.

I smiled and said I didn't have any.

Just then, my phone kept buzzing in my pocket. She fished it out for me.

The screen lit up with messages from Grace.

"Clara, are you miserable now? So what if you're the real daughter? I still drove you out like a stray.

"Your parents, your husband, your son, and all your assets are mine now. Don't worry. I'll enjoy the rest of your life for you."

I was still staring at the texts when a group of people walked in and came straight toward me. Without saying a word, they wheeled me off to the operating room.

Out in the corridor, one of them finally produced a document.

"Your sister, Grace, has acute renal failure. She needs a transplant. Your family said that if we find you, we're to take you to surgery immediately. Here's the authorization."

Mom's signature sat at the bottom.

The ceiling lights blurred past as instruments clinked and clattered on the prep table.

I felt the room spinning and couldn't make out a single word anyone was saying.

That potent painkiller could numb every nerve in my body, but it couldn't touch the ache in my heart.

They had just finished the prep and were about to inject the anesthesia when my heart monitor flatlined and every machine erupted in alarms.

Seeing this, the surgeons froze.

The operating room doors burst open, and a nurse rushed in, panting. "You can't take her kidneys! Ms. Clara Winton was bitten by a venomous snake. The toxin has spread throughout her body. All her organs are compromised. She took a strong analgesic two days ago. Today is her last day."

Silence fell over the room.

I was dying from snake venom, yet my mother didn't even notice. All she cared about was cutting out my kidney to save the adopted daughter she loved more.

My soul hovered above it all, watching as the nurse called my mother.

"Hello, are you the parents of Ms. Clara Winton? Your daughter passed away at 11:00 am."

The line clicked dead before she could finish.

"Scammer! How dare you curse my daughter!"

Mom paced outside another operating room. She'd already instructed everyone that once I was found, they were to drag me to surgery no matter what I was doing. Why was it taking so long?

She dialed the surgeon. "What's going on? It's just a kidney. Why hasn't it been done yet?"

The doctor said apologetically, "I'm very sorry. Your daughter was envenomed. Her organs have been destroyed by the toxin and can't be used. And she's already passed away. Her body is in our morgue. Please come to claim her as soon as possible."

Grace stopped crying and sneered. "Why are you all blaming me without even looking at what you've done? When Clara said she'd been bitten by a snake, you didn't believe her and called it an act."When I said I'd been bitten, you all rushed to me and gave me the only dose of antivenom. I said I wanted the hospital, and you kept pressuring Clara to hand it over. Did you ever once ask if she was even willing to pass it to me?"She turned to Daniel. "And you! Don't act like you were some devoted husband. Did you pull away when I kissed you? Did you say no when I asked for wedding photos? You even divorced her for me! Do you really think you loved Clara that much?"Every single one of you hurt her for my sake! When I said I needed a kidney, you forced her to give it to me! Did any of you even ask her? You blame me for lying, but what about all of you?"She let out a mocking laugh. "None of you is any better than I am!"No one spoke. They all knew Grace was telling the truth.Mom dropp

They took my body home to prepare for the funeral. As they were leaving the hospital, a doctor handed Daniel my phone. "This was the deceased's phone. It's out of battery, and we didn't charge it. Take it with you as a keepsake."After the funeral, Daniel finally accepted that I was truly gone.He took out the phone. It had already been fully charged. At first, he didn't dare to open anything, but he couldn't stop himself from wanting to see what was inside. When he finally found the courage, he saw the notes filled with little details about his and Ethan's favorite things. The photo album was full of warm moments shared between the three of us.Tears ran down his face before he could stop them.Just then, my phone buzzed with a text.Daniel opened it and found a string of curses. As he scrolled, each message grew more vicious than the last. They all came from Grace, who had always seemed so gentle. No! That couldn't be right! Grace wouldn't send such hateful messages! She had

Daniel ran into Mom and Dad the moment he reached the hospital. Both of them hurried up to him. Dad asked, "Have you seen Clara? We haven't seen her in two days."Mom added, "I sent people to look for her, but no one's reported back. Where could she have gone?"Daniel frowned. "Mom, Dad, I've got a bad feeling. Clara wouldn't just disappear for this long."Right then, his phone rang. It was the hospital."Hello, are you Ms. Clara Winton's husband? Your wife passed away at our hospital on August 25. We haven't been able to reach her parents, so we're calling you."If you have time, could you come and claim her remains? If you don't come soon, we'll have to send her to the crematorium."Daniel was about to hang up when Mom snatched the phone from him. "Where's your hospital? Tell me the address. We're on our way!"The hospital had called Mom countless times before. She either refused to answer or picked up just to curse them out. Eventually, she blocked the number. With no other

Meanwhile, at the Winton residence, Mom scrolled through her chat history with me. Most of the thread was my messages. Her replies were usually just perfunctory responses like "okay" or "yeah".Dad came over, toweling his hair dry. "What are you doing? Why are you reading your messages with Clara?""How many days has it been since we last saw her?" Mom asked.Dad thought it over. "Two days, I guess. She's sulking again?""Even if she is, she wouldn't turn her phone off! Doesn't she know we'd worry if we can't reach her? Something feels off," Mom murmured....The next day, they went to the hospital again.Grace looked better than yesterday. She glanced at Mom, put on a playful pout, and said, "Mom, when Clara said she'd give me the hospital, she also said I'd need your signatures. Can you both come with me today to finish the transfer?""No rush," Mom said. "We'll talk when you're fully recovered."The answer threw Grace for a bit. She had expected Mom to beam and march her s

Back at the hospital, Grace dusted on makeup to look fragile. Not long after, Mom, Dad, and Daniel showed up.The moment Mom saw how pale she looked, her eyes went red. "What happened? Weren't you almost recovered? Why do you look worse?"Grace pushed herself up on the bed. "I'm fine, Mom. If Clara doesn't want to donate a kidney, I understand. No one wants to have surgery when they're perfectly healthy."Mom's heart clenched. "Don't worry, Grace. I'll find Clara and make her donate her kidney."She pulled out her phone and called me, but my phone had been off due to a dead battery and wouldn't connect. She tried twice, but each call went straight to voicemail.Mom frowned. "I thought she'd finally learned her lesson a few days ago, but she's the same as ever! A leopard doesn't change its spots! Don't worry, Grace. I've already sent people to find her. Once we do, we'll bring her in for the transplant."Grace nodded meekly, though fury churned behind her eyes."Clara always kee

Mom snapped, "What nonsense are you talking about? My daughter's fine. How could she be dead? Are you taking our money and doing nothing?""It's true. Her body is in our morgue," the doctor said. The line went dead again.Mom shouted angrily at her phone, "Ungrateful brat! I raised her, and all I asked was for her to give a kidney to her sister! And she had the nerve to lie to me with the help of others! She's so strong! How could she possibly be dead?"Just then, they wheeled Grace out of surgery. The doctor said she was stable for now, but if they didn't get a kidney soon, she might not make it.Mom comforted Grace while trying to call me. But I was already dead, so of course I couldn't answer. She was so furious she nearly threw her phone.Later that day, Grace was alone in her room when the door opened and a blond man stepped in. It was her ex-boyfriend, Brandon Reed.Grace eyed him warily. "What are you doing here?"Brandon let out a cold laugh. "Still playing the same ol
