Victor and Lexi just made it back inside the mansion before it started to pour. They quietly walked through the kitchen, and then to the dining room. They walked to the foyer.
“May I take your coat, Ms. Brown,” he asked.
“Oh no. I got it,” Lexi said.
They took off their coats and hats. Victor opened the closet door to put away their things. They walked out of the foyer.
Thunder roared outside with the rain. Several flashes of lightning shined through the windows.
“So, Victor, what’s on the dinner menu this evening?&rdq
Jennifer and Jeffrey requested that their dinner be served in their room. Jeffrey told the others that Jennifer was so upset about what happened to Lindsay that she was too afraid to leave the room. It was a partial truth. Jennifer was petrified, but she wanted to be alone with her husband so they could discuss their next move. “We should leave,” Jennifer said seriously. “We can’t leave even if we wanted to,” Jeffrey said seriously. “There’s practically a hurricane outside.” “It’s just a bad storm,” Jennifer countered. “We only have to drive twenty-five miles. It’s a better option than staying here and getting attacked for
The thunder and lightning had subsided and the rain had let up. However, the wind was blowing hard. According to the weatherman on the radio, the break from the storm wasn’t going to last long. It was going to storm on and off for the next two days. Brock, Troy, Blake, Barry, Lexi, and Nicole were having after-dinner drinks in the receiving room. Lindsay, Jennifer, and Jeffrey had dinner upstairs in their rooms. Lindsay was feeling better, but as a precaution, she stayed in bed. Victor had just gone upstairs to check on everyone. Troy and Barry had wanted to call Connor, but they couldn’t find their cellphones. They had confronted Brock about it. Brock had sworn up and down that he didn’t have them. So, they had tried to call Connor from the landline pho
Ten minutes later, everyone was in the foyer putting on their coats. Victor was going to stay. He had said that he hadn’t abandoned his post during the worst of times since he’s been employed at the Mosley Mansion. Brock wasn’t having it.“You’re being foolish,” Brock said. “If you stay here alone, you’re going to get killed. You’re coming with us.”“Sir-,” Victor began.“That’s an order, solider,” Brock said sternly.Barry handed Victor his trench coat and paperboy hat. “You may as well put these on, dude. We’re not leaving without you.”“You’re not betraying anything by coming with us,” Lexi assured the butler. “I’m sure Mr. Mosley won’t mind you leaving the house when your life is in danger.”“She’s right,” Blake said as he adjusted the dark plaid scarf around the collar of
An hour later, Lexi was in her room with the door open. She had changed into a white nightgown. She started wondering if it was a good idea for her to change out of her clothes. What if she needed to run outside to save her life? She stood in the middle of the room. She couldn’t believe her predicament. For the first time in her life, she had plenty of money to do what she wanted and now she was in a life-or-death situation.“Why couldn’t this have happened while I was broke?” she mumbled.“What?” Blake said as he approached the doorway. He was holding a black bible.“Oh…nothing,” she said.“I came to check on you,” Blake said.“Where is everyone else?” Lexi asked. He stepped into the room. “Troy and Victor are doing a perimeter check. Brock is downstairs with Lindsay. Barry and Nicole are playing cards in the receiving room.”Lexi nodded
Barry walked Lindsay to her room. Brock, Troy, and Nicole were in her room. Victor’s quarters were in a separate house in the backyard, but considering what was going on he had decided to spend the night upstairs in the main house. Lindsay was more nervous than a cat in a tree. Seven years in the Marines had conditioned him to keep calm in life or death situations. Barry turned to leave Lindsay in her room. “Wait,” she said nervously. “Can’t you stay for a while?” He supposed he could. It’s not like he had anyone else to talk to. Nicole was drunk and flirting with Troy and Brock like c
Lexi opened her eyes to find Blake gone. She turned her head to look at the clock. It was covered with a note. Lexi rolled her body to lie on her side and picked it up.Dear Lexi,Last night was the most enlightening and sensual experience of my life. I will never forget it. Because I am a man of the cloth, I should be ashamed, but I am not. I hope you are not either. I thought it best that I go back to my room to keep both our reputations intact. I’ll see you in the morning.BlakeLexi smiled as she laid the note next to the clock. After they had made love, they had held each other and listened to the rain. They had made out as well. She didn’t mean to fall asleep. She wasn’t ashamed of herself. For the first time in her life, she had sex with a virgin. Feminine power and confidence flowed through her. Most women would be horrified that they had de-virginized a priest. Not Lexi. She was proud of it. She
Everyone had packed up their things and moved down to the den. There was a full bathroom downstairs, so everyone took turns showering and getting dressed. Victor had found some old camping gear in the basement. Everyone had helped him carry sleeping bags, flashlights, pillows, and blankets to the den. They didn’t sit down to breakfast until ten. The mood was somber, tense, and stressed. Nicole was eating slowly. Troy and Brock were stone-faced. Blake quietly ate. Lexi fought not to wolf her food down like a carnivore because she was a stress eater. Lindsay picked at her food. They were able to calm her down a little bit, but the joint that Nicole had in her purse had helped Lindsay more. The kitchen door was propped open because Brock didn’t want Victor to be closed off from the rest of the group. He didn’t care if he was just in the next room or not.Brock cleared his throat at the table. “I think we should talk about recent events.”
Brock and Lexi came up with a plan and told Troy about it when he came back outside. Lexi insisted on being with them when they confronted Victor. To Brock’s dismay, he gave in. Lexi thought she would be safe as long as Brock was around because he had a weapon. Besides, she needed to be there. She had become fond of the elderly butler and she wanted to know why Victor would do all these awful things. Didn’t he know that Brock would have provided anything he needed?Troy was supposed to tell Victor that he needed his help with searching the mausoleum. Troy was also going to tell Victor he believed the killer might have hidden the missing spark plug cables there or had a getaway vehicle on the grounds.Brock and Lexi brought tools from the shed into the mausoleum. Brock was prying off the loose white marble tile that Victor had pointed out to Lexi when they were in the mausoleum together.A realization struck Lexi like a ton of bricks. “Bro
