Chapter 2

Author: Baba De Luna
That figurine was a gift Heather gave me on my 18th birthday.

I'd treasured it like a priceless keepsake, holding onto it for all these years. But now, all I could feel was the bitter irony.

I tossed the figurine into the trash without a second thought. A startled look crossed Heather's face. She was about to say something when a clear male voice from the doorway cut her off.

"Heather!"

Heather immediately turned and hurried over to Jake. "Jake, what are you doing here tonight?"

Jake wrapped his arms around her neck, pressing himself snugly against her. "What's the matter? Is there something going on here that I'm not supposed to see?"

As he spoke, his gaze went right past Heather and settled on me. With his arms crossed, Jake sauntered over with a smug smirk of a victor, looking me up and down with disdain.

"Heather, why is this old geezer still here? He's so old, and his skin's all loose and saggy. How can you even bring yourself to kiss him?"

Heather buried her face in his chest, rubbing against him as she gave a soft laugh. "Jake, you're so cute when you're jealous. Don't mind him. He's just here to grab his things. He'll be gone soon."

She tilted her head up to kiss Jake, but he turned his head away. "I don't want to! You touched that old man, so you're filthy. Who knows what kind of disease he might have?

"As punishment, go scrub your mouth out. And until it's clean, you're not allowed to kiss me!"

Far from taking offense, Heather just chuckled and ruffled his hair. "Okay, okay. Whatever you say."

And just like that, she actually headed for the bathroom.

Jake turned to me with a smug grin. He deliberately pinched his nose, his whole face scrunched up in disgust.

"Ew, what's with the old-man smell? Gross! This whole place stinks!"

Vicky came over and affectionately took Jake's hand. "Don't worry, Jake. I'll go get some disinfectant and sanitize this place from top to bottom!"

Jake walked around me, exaggeratedly sniffing as if I reeked. When Vicky brought the disinfectant over, he snatched it from her and started spraying it all over me.

"Oh, so the smell is coming from you, old man. You seriously stink! Just like I thought. You really are in your 30s. You already smell like an old man."

I looked up at him coldly. "So what if I'm 30? What, were you not planning on living that long?"

Jake's smile vanished instantly. He glared at me furiously. "You! Dustin Holman, what's there to be so smug about?"

He abruptly pulled out a piece of paper and waved it around, flaunting it. "See this? A marriage certificate! I'm Heather's legitimate husband. You're just a little homewrecker—oh, my bad, an old homewrecker. So what makes you think you can run your mouth at me?"

Vicky planted her hands on her hips and started going off on me. "Exactly! Ms. Reid is my daughter-in-law now. Get out of here already, you shameless piece of trash!"

As I watched the shameless pair, all I could think was how absurd this all was.

I suddenly remembered how, when Jake first started college, Vicky had cried to me about how hard things were at home and how she couldn't afford his tuition.

Feeling sorry for them, I immediately advanced her six months' wages and even gave her extra money on top of that.

Back then, Vicky had bowed deeply to me, crying her eyes out as she promised she'd repay my kindness one day.

I flashed a mocking smile and stared straight at Vicky. "Vicky Davis, so this is what you meant by repaying me?"

Vicky's gaze shifted uneasily as she took two steps back, too guilty to meet my eyes.

Jake shoved me, snapping arrogantly, "Quit holding that over our heads! You really think you're some kind of savior just because you gave us a bit of money?"

He was about to go on when his eyes flicked past me. In an instant, his whole demeanor changed, and he put on a pitiful expression.

"Mr. Holman, I know you look down on us. My mom may be a housekeeper, but housekeepers have dignity too! Please, don't make things harder for her…"

Jake wiped away a nonexistent tear as he continued resolutely, "You want her to get on her knees to shine your shoes, right? My mom's getting old and can't take that kind of humiliation, so I'll do it!"

Before I could even react, he suddenly threw himself at my feet, then deliberately planted his palm on the glass shards. Blood quickly ran down his hand.

"Jake!" Heather came running over and pulled him into her arms, her eyes red with concern. "Somebody get the doctor!"

Once the private doctor had tended to Jake, Heather slapped me across the face without warning. "Dustin, have I been letting you get away with too much?"

There in the owner's line, plain as day, was the name of a complete stranger. I shrugged indifferently. "Who knows? Never heard of him."As Heather immediately started making frantic phone calls like a woman possessed, I sneered inwardly.I'd already gone and sold that house she gave. I could easily walk away from a cheating woman, but why would I turn down the money?"Oh, that's right—just a little reminder for you two lovebirds. What spouses share isn't just assets. The debts come as a package deal, too," I said breezily. With that, I turned to Vanessa and asked, feigning surprise, "Vanessa, how much is Ms. Reid's company in the hole for right now?"Vanessa's eyes held a hint of indulgence and amusement. Going along with me, she said offhandedly, "Well, probably around 20 billion dollars."Jake shrieked on the spot, "20 billion dollars? No way! Why should I have to pay that back with her? That's 20 billion dollars! I could never pay that off in my lifetime!"I kindly reminde

Banquets like this were nothing new to me. Back when I was with Heather, I'd attended plenty of business receptions. But not once had I ever shown up in a suit this formal and high-end.I used to tell Heather I didn't like fancy things, hoping she'd spend less on me—and she honestly believed it."Dustin, what are you daydreaming about?"Vanessa's gentle voice sounded beside my ear. She leaned forward slightly and carefully straightened my tie. "My brother is the most handsome man in the room today."I met her gentle eyes, feeling a sudden warmth spread through my chest. Then I glanced toward the doorway and saw Heather standing there, rooted to the spot.I barely acknowledged her, as though she were just some stranger.Jake, who had arrived with Heather, blurted out in shock upon seeing me, "Dustin? What are you doing here?"Vanessa shot Jake a cold look. "Oh? So the fake, manipulative pretty boy knows my little brother?""Your brother?"Jake went white as a sheet, shrieking

Heather was visibly shaken. She stumbled back, barely keeping herself upright. All the color drained from her face as she muttered in disbelief, "All of them pulled out? How could this happen?"Jake had never dealt with anything like this. He seized Heather's hand in a panic, speaking frantically. "Heather, please tell me this isn't true! Everything was perfectly fine yesterday. How could our funding be cut off all of a sudden?"What about our company? What about the IPO? Does this mean I don't get to be VP anymore?"Heather didn't have the time or patience to deal with him at the moment. Her hate-filled eyes locked onto Vanessa. "It was you! You did this!"She charged at Vanessa without a second thought, but before she could even get close, one of Vanessa's bodyguards kicked her hard and sent her flying.Unwilling to accept defeat, Heather was about to lunge forward again when the venue doors suddenly burst open. Several uniformed officials hurried inside. The one in the lead

The bell-ringing ceremony was in full swing, the hall packed with guests.Camera flashes went off as Jake, dressed in a custom-tailored suit, walked arm in arm with Heather. He had a smug grin on his face.He soaked up every envious gaze in the room, acting like he was already the head of a wealthy family.Heather looked just as pleased with herself as she gently stroked the back of Jake's hand.Once that bell was struck, her company would officially go public, and she would finally join the ranks of the city's elite. She would never again be that broke, helpless orphan with nothing to her name.Just as the host announced that it was time to ring the bell, the venue doors were abruptly shoved open. Two rows of bodyguards in black stormed in and quickly spread out along both sides of the venue. Then a tall woman walked in at an unhurried pace. She carried an unmistakable air of authority, and one glance from her was enough to make every powerful figure in the room hold their bre

When I came to again, I found my stepsister, Vanessa Atwood, watching me unblinkingly. "Dustin, you're finally awake."I croaked out, "Vanessa."Vanessa held my hand, her face still showing the raw fear of having almost lost me for good. "Dustin, if I'd gotten there any later… I don't even want to think about what would have happened."As soon as she said that, everything that had happened before I passed out came rushing back to me.From the moment I was thrown into that psychiatric hospital, there wasn't a single waking moment when I wasn't being tortured.Robert had chained me to the bed with a twisted grin and said in a sinister voice, "Mr. Holman, out of everyone you could've crossed, you just had to go and cross Mr. Palmer. He specifically told us to take good care of you."The Mr. Palmer he was talking about was Jake, of course. He certainly had no shortage of tricks when it came to destroying me.At Robert's command, four doctors in white coats roughly pinned down my lim

"What?" The relaxed look on Heather's face vanished as anger took over. "Who did it? Who dares mess around on my turf and touch my people on top of it? Do they have a death wish?"Jake pressed Heather's hand back against his abs and said casually, "Heather, could Dustin have found himself a sugar mommy? He must have some serious connections if he actually found someone bold enough to go against you."Heather's expression was ice-cold as she spat through clenched teeth, "I'd like to see who has the nerve to do this! Get the car ready!"The entrance to the psychiatric hospital was a complete wreck. Shards of glass covered the ground, the main gate was badly bent out of shape, and several medical staff in white coats were crouched nearby, covered in injuries. The moment the director, Robert Johnson, spotted Heather's car, he scurried over in a panic. "Ms. Reid, thank goodness you're here! A whole gang of people showed up just now and started smashing the place up without a single word
