Chapter 3

작가: Roaring River
Whether Jaguar's story was real or fabricated, he radiated a perfect broken-man-waiting-to-be-saved vibe, which was practically begging me to take the bait.

The night was deep, and the rain beyond the window poured harder. A faint, dull ache throbbing in my knees made me stagger as I walked.

Ever since getting that injury, rainy days had always come with waves of pain in my knee.

Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.

"Come in," I said tiredly.

I thought it was Walter, but to my surprise, it was Jaguar. He walked in wearing black pajamas and held a small bottle of essential oil, with his sleeves casually rolled up to his elbows.

When his eyes fell on my knees, his gaze was calm, but there was something quietly insistent in the way he looked at me.

"I'm here to give you a massage."

I frowned. "I don't need it."

Instead of answering, he walked over to me, dropped to one knee, and cupped his hands around my knee.

I instinctively tried to pull my leg back. "Let go."

"If you don't want my body, at least enjoy my services," Jaguar said, ignoring my resistance.

He pressed his fingers gently against my knee and slowly kneaded it. His movements were incredibly practiced and natural, as if he had done this thousands of times before.

"Your knees will ache on rainy days. You need to keep them warm…" he said in a low and steady voice.

"You do know a lot," I said coldly.

He didn't look up and remained entirely focused on the massage. His pressure shifted smoothly between light and firm, easing the throbbing pain in my knee.

"I used to learn about massage therapy," he replied and set the bottle of essential oil on the table. "I formulated this medicinal oil for someone very important to me, and it works pretty well."

I looked at him. "Then why aren't you massaging this important person instead?"

He finally looked up and met my eyes. His gaze was calm, yet it seemed to carry an overwhelming weight of emotions.

"She's… just starting to know me."

With that, he withdrew his hands and stood up. "If your knees hurt again, Ms. Sterling, you can call me at any time."

I reached out and brushed my fingers lightly across his cheek. My voice was soft but carried an undeniable authority.

"Are you trying to please me?"

He chuckled. "Since you're looking to tame a wild pet, Ms. Sterling, I should probably do my part. I wouldn't want you thinking you're making a bad investment."

I fell briefly silent before my eyes fell on the medicinal oil he had formulated.

Suddenly, it seemed like keeping him around might actually be a fantastic idea. Better yet, he was gorgeous, knew how to make me feel pampered, and maybe… He was turning out to be way more useful than I ever expected.

After Jaguar left, the dull ache in my knees significantly subsided. I slept well through the night for the first time in a while.

By the time I woke up, it was bright daylight. I immediately called for Walter.

As I touched my knees, which felt much better, a smile tugged at the corner of my lips. "The custom suits I ordered from Winston should be ready by now. Have them delivered to him."

Winston Rhodes was the Sterlings' exclusive private tailor. All his pieces were handmade and served as a major status symbol.

"Mr. Blackwood hasn't visited in a while. Shall I have them sent to his office?" Walter instinctively asked.

Mr. Blackwood?

I frowned, clearly annoyed. "I have a pet now, Walter. Of course, I'm going to save all the good things for my man."

Walter nodded and seamlessly switched names. "In that case, I'll have the clothes delivered to Mr. Reed."

"Good."

Over the next few weeks, I finally began to understand what Adrian meant when he talked about the joys of spoiling Poppy.

Jaguar never rejected my kindness. When the custom-made clothes were delivered, he was thrilled and immediately put them on, showing me how perfectly they fit and how much he loved them.

To me, he was too gaunt, so I ordered the kitchen to prepare all kinds of nutritious meals for him. Color slowly returned to his face, and he grew stronger.

Every time I helped him or gave him a gift, he never turned them down or pretended to be all high and mighty. Instead, he sincerely thanked me and showed me just how much he cherished my gifts.

People always expected a return on their investments. It was true when dealing with Poppy, and it was just as true with Jaguar.

The next time I heard about Adrian was on a crime news broadcast. He had violently assaulted his adopted sister, Poppy. During their struggle, he accidentally went too far and killed her.In the end, Adrian destroyed his poppy flower and ruined his life along with it.All I felt was a strange sense of melancholy when I read the news, and I couldn't help but ask myself. Jaguar and I wouldn't end in the same tragic way, would we?Hesitantly, I asked, "Would you ever—""No. Never," he interrupted with a smile playing on his lips. "I'll always be just your Jaguar."My ears immediately flushed red, though I forced myself to stay calm and nod. "That's more like it.""Don't you think I deserve a reward?"He suddenly leaned in close. The faint scent of rich sandalwood radiating from his body made me feel safe and guarded.I bit my lip and asked, "What kind of reward do you want?""Let's get officially married tomorrow morning. Don't you think it's about time you give me legal status

Listening to the whispers of the crowd, Adrian, who was used to being put on a pedestal, completely lost it."Why him? What does Jaguar have that I don't? He's just a broke, powerless loser!""Did I just hear someone call my grandson a broke, powerless loser?"The grand doors of the ballroom swung open before a gray-haired man holding an ebony cane slowly walked in, followed by a small army of suited bodyguards. The room erupted in quiet gasps. Everyone recognized him as the wealthiest tycoon of Crison, Alistair Reed.Alistair tapped the table lightly with his emerald ring. "I wasn't aware that the Reeds had fallen so far that we're now considered broke and powerless."You little rascal! Aren't you going to come over and explain to me?""What brings you here, Grandpa?" Jaguar asked.Alistair snorted. "You told me you've set your heart on the daughter of Sterlings, so of course, I'm here to back you up."Not only was Adrian shell-shocked, but I was also completely stunned. It t

I looked at the painting in front of Jaguar. It was a version of me I had never seen before, as if I had already grown old, sitting in a rocking chair and watching the sunset…That was when I recalled what he had told me, that he had known me in our past lives. What if it was actually true?…The day of the gala arrived right on schedule. When Adrian showed up, he instinctively moved to stand beside me, but I quietly shifted away."Give me some regard here," he murmured under his breath. But I showed no mercy and exposed him. "You're not the escort I invited."The expression on his face slowly cracked before he lowered his voice and said, "We've been together for years, Evelyn. How much longer are you going to stay mad? Can't you forgive me this once?""I'm not mad," I said. "I just think you had a great point. Sponsoring an underprivileged student really is so much fun."But keeping someone like Jaguar was a million times better than keeping Poppy. Jaguar cared about me and

I chuckled. "So what? What matters is that I'm happy."Seeing how little I cared seemed to fuel Adrian's rage."Mr. Sterling arranged our marriage! Do you honestly think your dad would let you be with a man with a sketchy background?"Evelyn! Even if you look down on me, I'm still your only fiancee!"He was about to continue when Walter cut him off. "Mr. Blackwood, you are in no place to interfere in matters between Ms. and Mr. Sterling."Though Walter was just a butler, his words carried far more weight than mine.Adrian swallowed the words at the tip of his tongue and looked bitterly resentful. But none of that had anything to do with me anymore.Even so, the questions he raised planted a seed of doubt in my heart. That evening, Jaguar made me dinner. Every single dish was my favorite, though it was just a simple four-course meal."Ms. Sterling, could you give me your bank account number?" he asked out of the blue.I gave him a calm look, and before I could even ask why, he

The moment Adrian saw clothes that were supposed to belong to him appearing on Jaguar instead, there was a near-mad jealousy in his eyes, and he nearly lost all rationality."Evelyn!" he demanded, practically grinding his teeth. "What is this man doing here? What is your relationship with him?"I found it somewhat hilarious to see him act so self-righteous. Standing up, I casually loosened my wrist and gave him a resounding slap right across the face in front of everyone.Adrian never expected me to lay a hand on him. He didn't even try to dodge and took the blow in a thoroughly pathetic manner.Walter handed me a sanitizing wipe. As I wiped my hand, I looked at the arrogant Adrian and curiously asked, "Adrian, who gave you the permission to speak to me like that?"Adrian had come over to angrily lecture me from his self-righteous moral high ground, but my reaction caught him off guard. He froze where he stood."Listen carefully," I continued, carelessly glancing between him and

Jaguar would occasionally gift me paintings he had made himself, portraits of me from every angle, as if I were the only thing he could see.He would also cook amazing food for me. I couldn't even name half the dishes, but somehow, every single one perfectly suited my tastes. Before rainy days, he would massage my knees to keep the pain at bay.It felt like he knew me better than I understood myself. This was a stark contrast to Adrian, who didn't even know that I couldn't stand cilantro, let alone that my knees ached whenever it rained, after all the years we had been together. He never went out of his way to get me gifts. Instead, after accepting mine, he would go on about how above material things he was, as if my giving him gifts was wrong, while his taking them was completely justified.I was done wasting my energy on such an exhausting, unrewarding relationship.I redirected all my previous devotion onto Jaguar because whenever I gave him a gift, he would find a way to re
