Chapter 2

Author: Echo
I didn't have time for her bullshit. I stood up and walked straight toward the man.

Isabella was clearly not used to being ignored. Her smile froze.

I tossed the marriage contract onto the table without ceremony. "Robin Kane? I'm Zora Romano. Your fiancée. The contract's right here. If there are no problems, show me to a room. I need a shower and a rest."

Robin’s eyes flickered from the papers to my face. He said nothing.

Isabella looked horrified, probably because she’d never seen anyone speak to the Don like that. She tugged on his sleeve, her voice full of hurt. "Robin... I don't think she likes me..."

If she'd pulled that on Elena, my sister would have been stammering apologies.

But I'm not Elena.

"And who are you?" I cut her off, my voice laced with impatience. "Why should I like you? You've got a lot of mouth for an outsider in this house."

Isabella froze.

I turned back to Robin, tapping a finger on the table. "Or is it Kane family policy to let an outsider run the house?"

Finally, Robin moved.

He pulled his arm free from Isabella's grasp, ignoring her shocked expression. A slow smile touched his lips.

"Butler, show the lady to the master bedroom."

As I followed the butler upstairs, I could hear Isabella starting to sniffle behind me.

I smirked. If she couldn't handle that, she was in for a rough time.

The master bedroom was huge, immaculate, and ridiculously opulent. I took a long shower, changed into fresh clothes, and felt a hell of a lot better.

Three days later, the engagement party was held in the estate's garden.

Every major crime family in New York sent a representative. It was a big deal.

When I appeared on Robin's arm in a custom-made black gown, all eyes were on us.

"The bride is stunning."

"It's an arranged marriage, but they look good together…"

And right on cue, Isabella started her act again.

She was wearing a pure white dress, her eyes red-rimmed, looking fragile and pitiful.

"I'm so jealous of Zora," she said, her voice trembling. "All it took was a piece of paper to become the lady of the Kane family. Unlike me… I'll only ever be under Robin's protection…"

The implication hung in the air, and you could feel the shift in the crowd's whispers. She was making it clear they had a special bond.

I glanced at the man beside me. His face was still a blank mask.

Figures. The man has a mouth but won't speak for himself.

Fine. If she wanted a show, I'd give her one.

I spun around, wrapped my arms around Robin's neck, and in front of everyone, I kissed him, hard.

The garden went dead silent.

When I pulled back, I shot Isabella a smug look and raised an eyebrow. "You're right. I'm the woman who deserves this spot."

Her face went pale, and tears started streaming down her cheeks.

"And another thing," I added. "At least I don't have to play the victim to get attention."

She was speechless. All she could do was turn to Robin for help. "Robin, tomorrow is the anniversary of my father's death. You'll pick me up, right? We've spent that day together for years…"

My nails dug lightly into the back of Robin's neck. A silent warning.

To my shock, he frowned and then nodded. "I'll have everything ready tomorrow."

Rage flared in my chest. I tightened my grip on his neck, used the momentum to pivot, and threw him over my shoulder.

The storm passed. My company's reputation soared, and the incident ironically brought in even more business. Robin and I finally had time to pay a formal visit to my family.Standing in front of that familiar villa, me, the woman who feared nothing, found her palms were sweating."Nervous?" Robin looked down at me, a teasing smile on his lips."Duh," I shot back. "I snuck out last time. My dad has a temper. He's probably going to break my legs."Robin laughed, pulling me into his arms and placing a kiss on my forehead."Don't worry. If he tries anything, I'll take the hit for you. Now, can you stop shaking at the door, my queen?"The door opened. My father stood there, his face grim, a cane in his hand. My mother and Elena stood behind him, looking worried."You ungrateful girl!" my father roared, thumping the cane on the floor. Before I could say anything, Robin stepped forward and gave a deep, formal bow.The move stunned everyone. This was Robin Kane, the man who made all of New Yor

Robin was wearing only a black dress shirt, sleeves rolled up to his strong forearms. But the air of cold violence coming off him was enough to make anyone freeze."B-Boss Robin!"Marco lost his spine. All his previous arrogance vanished, and he dropped to his knees in the mud.Isabella was even more terrified, her face ashen as she scrambled to hide behind him."You bomb my wife's business. You threaten my wife." Robin didn't even look at them. He just came to my side, put his arm around my shoulders, and checked me for any injuries. "Zora, what do you want to do with this garbage?"I lowered my gun and looked at the couple who had been so high and mighty just moments before."Make them talk. I want to know who gave the order."Robin waved a hand.A few bodyguards moved in, grabbing Marco and Isabella like they were nothing."Talk!"Robin spat out the single word, and Marco broke completely."It wasn't me, Boss! It was this bitch!" Marco shoved Isabella forward without a second's hesi

I overheard them as I passed and couldn't help but raise an eyebrow.Isabella was with Marco? He was a known sleaze, a Valenti family lapdog. Was Isabella really that desperate, or just that stupid?Robin couldn't care less about those two.He was busy handling the family's expansion on the West Coast, while I was preparing to launch my security company, "The Fortress," in New York.I had no intention of being a Boss's wife kept in a gilded cage. The first contract for The Fortress was to take over and upgrade a new high-tech security center the Kane family was building in Brooklyn. It would be my showroom, my stage to display my power to the entire underworld.I personally supervised the construction to make sure everything was flawless. But the night before the ribbon-cutting ceremony, someone slipped in and planted a bomb. All my hard work went up in flames. The next day, as I was surveying the wreckage, a familiar, sickening voice called out."Well, well, if it isn't Mrs. Kane."Is

Isabella vanished after that, and I didn't give a damn where she ended up.The winds had shifted in the Kane family. The looks that used to be filled with disdain were now full of respect, even fear. After all, I was the woman who could throw the Boss over her shoulder and slap his "ex" in public.I didn't stay idle.Robin gave me total freedom, and I started tightening up the family's sloppy security. These busy, fulfilling days made my relationship with Robin heat up fast. The cold, distant man was a possessive animal in private, determined to wear me out every single night. It was a lot, but god, I loved it.One evening, two months later.I had just finished reviewing a list of new security equipment and walked into the bedroom to find Robin staring at his phone, a strange look on his face."What's wrong? Robin’s words blew Isabella’s bullshit story wide open. All eyes snapped to Isabella’s face.A thumbprint on top, four fingers below. The classic mark of a backhand slap… from her own hand. Isabella frantically covered her face. "No... that's not it... I was trying to dodge...""And the dagger," Robin added coldly. "If Zora had done it, with her skills, that knife would've gone straight through your palm, not just scraped your arm. If you're still going to lie, I'll have them check for prints."Isabella collapsed to the floor. The truth was out.The elders' anger turned to embarrassment, then disgust."Isabella, you've disappointed me greatly," sighed one of the elders who had watched her grow up.Seeing it was all over, Isabella scrambled towards Robin and clung to his leg. "Robin, brother, I wasn't thinking straight! I love you too much... I was scared of losing you! For my dead father's sake... for my mother who made you soup all those years ago, please, forgive me this one time!"T

When I saw Robin and a group of his men running in, my blood boiled."I didn't lay a finger on her," I said, my voice ice-cold as I fought to control my temper. "She did this to herself."In that moment, I made up my mind. If Robin believed her bullshit for one second, I was walking out on this marriage and never looking back. But to my surprise, Robin’s eyes swept the scene, and then he took off his jacket and wrapped it around my shoulders. "Are you cold?"I stared at him, stunned. He believed me?Isabella couldn't believe it either. She got even more frantic. "Robin, look at my face! Look at my arm! She did this!""I just begged her to share a little bit of your love with me, and she attacked me! She said only a dead woman can't steal a man..."Robin's expression remained cold, unmoved.Isabella gritted her teeth and went for the kill.
