~ Xander ~

The boardroom had not been a place for noise. It surrendered to a different kind of sound, anxiety braided with restraint. Tonight that hush had followed us down the corridor and into the servants’ wing, so when I arrived at the doorway the silence felt like an accusation laid over polished marble.

They were assembled like supplicants. A ring of maids with their heads bowed low, aprons folded into their hands. The girl who’d brought the package was in the center on her knees, palms flat to the ground, the crest of her forehead nearly touching the floor. The others made a tight circle around her, their shoulders hunched as if physical closeness could stop whatever storm stood at the door.

The room stank of fear. My guards lined the walls, still as shadows but armed, their hands hovering close to their weapons. One wrong breath and the air would fracture.

Everything was in place from the moment I received the report that a maid had dared to defy the hierarchy. But I wasn’t ex

  • Switched at the Mafia Auction   Chapter 125: You still owe me

~Avelyn ~I didn’t think—I just ran.The second Kyle’s body jerked forward from the bullet, something inside me snapped loose. The three men who were supposed to guide me out barely reacted in time. I slipped right past them like my bones had forgotten I was supposed to be protected. All I saw was Kyle stumbling, Xander’s men spreading out, Kyle’s men shouting in Romanian, and the crack of gunfire echoing off the walls. It felt like the whole world went sideways.I heard one of the men behind me yell for me to stop, but none of them even came close to catching me. Apparently, survival instincts meant nothing when the person bleeding out in front of me was Kyle.Chaos erupted immediately. Someone shouted “sniper,” and suddenly everyone started firing in random directions. I barely registered it, because Kyle lifted his arm, his good one to stop his own men from retaliating. And that was the only reason I wasn’t dead three steps later. But I heard something else, a sharp voice calling s

~ Avelyn ~But I knew one thing…“What you’re asking,” I said slowly, my voice dry, “is too much, Kyle.”His face shifted instantly into an expression that wasn’t anger or shock, it was pain. The kind that looks earned. He dragged a hand down his face like he was bracing himself for impact.“I know I messed up,” he said. “I know I didn’t handle things right. But I can fix this now. I can make everything right. You belong with me, Avelyn. Not him.”The words hit something ugly inside me.“So it’s true,” I said suddenly, the sentence spilling out before I could stop it. “You made a bet with Xander. I never really got the chance to confront you about this that night”His posture stiffened.“That was his idea,” he said quickly. “You shouldn’t listen to anything he says. He’s a snake. He manipulates people for sport.”I already knew that. That wasn’t the point.“Does it matter who initiated the bet?” I asked. My voice shook despite my effort. “You let me get traded like livestock and lied

~ Avelyn ~Darkness didn’t come gently, it crashed into me.When I came back to myself, the first thing I felt was softness beneath my fingers. Not the cold marble of the garden. Not the rough grip from earlier. This was… fabric. Thick cushioned and expensive. My lashes fluttered. The ceiling above me wasn’t the sterile white of a clinic or the dim gold of Xander’s rooms. It was carved wood, detailed and old, with a chandelier that looked like it had no business existing in this century. Warm light spilled from it, soft and steady. For a second, I thought I’d lost my mind. Yes, that must be it. I’m imagining a scene from one of my fantasy movies but then a shadow leaned into my line of sight.“Avelyn?”The voice hit first and my chest tightened before my brain caught up.Kyle.No—That couldn’t be Kyle.I blinked slowly, my head pounding, my body heavy like I was waking from anesthesia. The man hovering over me had Kyle’s eyes. Kyle’s voice. Kyle’s hands reaching out tentatively towa

  • Switched at the Mafia Auction   Chapter 122: Xander’s game

~ Avelyn ~I was still standing over the pile of dollar bills when the guards appeared, two shadows blocking the backstage light.“Master Xander requests your presence.”The usual routine would have followed when one of them grip my arm, the other guiding me or rather dragging me wherever Xander wanted. That was the dynamic. That was the system. But tonight I said, “I need a minute.”And instead of grabbing me… they paused. They actually stepped back. One of them nodded and they moved to stand farther away, giving me space like I was something delicate that had to be handled softly.Right.The mistress title, the perks kept rolling in. Shame I didn’t feel a single drop of power from it.All I felt was dread crawling down my throat.Because the truth was…I didn’t need “a minute.”I needed hours, days. A freaking time machine, maybe.Anything that would make me ready to face Xander after what Veronica told me.I knew myself well enough to know I wouldn’t be able to sit across from hi

  • Switched at the Mafia Auction   Chapter 121: Underwater

~ Avelyn ~The descent to the bowl of water came next. It was deliberate. The technicians lowered me slowly so that when I released the pole I entered the air like something sliding off a blade. The water bowl waited like a stage prop enlarged into reality revealing a transparent, semi-circular basin large enough for a person to be entirely submerged beneath and yet visible from every seat. The lights under it glowed faintly, and a murmur moved through the crowd as my dress hit the water and the red began to bleed and smear into the clear.Underwater, everything was muffled and strange. Sound turned to a pressure I couldn’t parse. My lashes fanned like small black wings. The red clouded up around me, but then, because of the choreography and because of the precise temperature and density of the liquid they had used, the color sank fast. I moved slowly, floating, body loose and limber and completely under control. Time dilated. In that silence, the panic pressed against my ribcage li

  • Switched at the Mafia Auction   Chapter 120: The red rain

~ Avelyn ~For a second I honestly thought my knees were going to give out. My brain kept trying to rearrange her words into something less horrific, something that didn’t make me feel like I’d been walking around stupid and blind this entire time. Xander set up Kyle? Ari? The club? The dancer? My “rescue”??No. No, she was lying. She had to be lying. This was Veronica. This was what she did.But the denial didn’t settle. It just sat there, thin and flimsy, like tissue paper in a fire.I couldn’t breathe right. My chest felt tight, like there wasn’t enough air in the room anymore. And the worst part? My body kept moving anyway. I grabbed the rail backstage. I stepped toward the curtains. I adjusted my outfit. All normal, all routine.Meanwhile my mind was… nowhere. It was jammed, static. Just one long, buzzing panic that made my hands shake even though I kept curling them into fists behind my back.“Five minutes, Mistress Avelyn,” someone said.Mistress.God. The word almost made me
