Chapter 3

A Pot of Butter
Zonday sat in the audience, the only one not whispering.

He just stared at me with a frown, his expression complex.

"In light of Yunara Trent's abhorrent behavior, the school has decided to… cancel her scholarship and remove her from all positions!"

"My scholarship?!"

I quickly turned to him. "But..."

"Miss Trent."

Shelly's father squinted at me. "Do you think you're in any position to make demands?"

I tightened the grip on my clothes.

The ridicule from the other students was relentless.

I gritted my teeth, my eyes welling up.

I needed the scholarship to cover my mother's medical fees...

I hurried down from the stage. While I was walking away, I felt a light grip on my wrist.

Zonday looked at me, his expression complicated.

I pushed his hand away and rushed back to my seat.

After school, Zonday followed me closely.

"I've already paid your mother's medical fees."

"Thanks."

My voice was hoarse.

"I'm sorry. I didn't know you would be publicly criticized or that your scholarship would be canceled."

I walked on, not saying a word.

"Don't worry, I'll support you financially."

I still didn't turn back.

He grabbed my shoulder. "I won't do it again, I swear. Yunara, stop ignoring me."

Looking into his eyes, I recalled the past.

He had sworn that he would protect me for life after my father passed away.

But later, I met Camilla.

I could still vividly remember the flicker of amazement in his eyes when I introduced him to her.

Since then, whatever he gave me, he also offered her. He would always remember the things she liked, but he always seemed to forget mine.

I didn't mind, thinking they had just gotten closer.

That is, until he asked me to let Camilla beat me in the exam.

I took a deep breath and smiled. "I don't blame you. I'm willing to do this for you."

I felt his arm stiffen.

Simultaneously, his charm bracelet seemed to become a little tighter.

A few sneaky figures around the corner caught my attention.

My eyes widened, and I grabbed his hand.

"If you take me home, I'll forgive you."

"Of course."

He looked down at me, tenderness filling his gaze.

"This time, I'm really sorry."

But just as he took my hand to escort me home, his phone suddenly rang.

The caller ID read: [Camilla, the cutest girl in the world]

It seemed Camilla had changed her name in his phone herself.

"Camilla?" Zonday answered the call.

His expression suddenly turned serious, and he forcefully pushed me away.

"Shelly is messing with Camilla. You'll have to go home by yourself."

"But..."

Before I could finish, he had already sprinted away.

He even knocked me to the ground.

The group of people around the corner finally dared to reveal themselves.

The leader, Shelly, grabbed my hair.

"Do you think I'll let things slide just because you were publicly shamed? My chance for direct admission is gone. How can I let you off that easily? Get her!"

The thugs she brought with her charged at me, grabbing my arms and dragging me into an alley.

I screamed wildly, "Zonday, turn back!"

But he didn't look back even once.

Soon after, I saw a news report.Zonday was involved in a car accident. He was brought straight to the ICU."Not surprising," the beggar said while smoking a cigarette."He was the one who cast the spell. Once I broke it, he would also suffer backlash."I eventually went to the hospital to see Zonday. He was now paralyzed in bed, unable to attend college even though he was directly admitted. After all, he couldn't even eat without help.I sat by his bed and asked him, "Why must you hurt me like that?"He closed his eyes, tears slipped from the corners."You already know that I cast a spell on you?"After a moment of silence, I answered, "Sort of."He sighed, trembling."I just thought you would never leave me…"You've always clung to me since we were kids. After your father's death, you became even more dependent on me."In my subconscious, I already believe that you would never leave me, but that's not the case for Camilla. She can leave me whenever she wants…"I don't

Feeling his warm embrace, I was momentarily stunned.Maybe… he really regretted his mistakes and wanted to repent? That day, he took me to the most famous plastic surgery clinic in the city. However, the expert panel couldn't determine the cause of my condition either. After several exams, the results were the same.Zonday seemed anxious. That day, he contacted some friends abroad and bought me a plane ticket."There seems to be similar cases overseas. A doctor my friend knows has successfully treated patients like you. Let's go right away."Seeing the dark circles under his eyes, my eyes couldn't help getting teary.Perhaps I really should let bygones be bygones? While waiting for the flight, I saw the beggar again near the airport. When he saw me, he smiled."Going abroad? If you go, you might not come back.""What do you mean?" I was taken aback. He pulled down my mask, squinted as he observed my face, then pulled it back up."It's nothing. You'll be fine soon. You ju

Besides countless reporters, I was also visited by Zonday.Recently, he had been quietly observing me.Every time he sent me money, the amount increased dramatically, but I returned it all."I can leverage my popularity as the state's top scorer into a lot more money than you imagine. The money you spent on me over the years, I've already returned in full to your account, with interest. We owe each other nothing from now on."He became anxious."What do you mean we owe each other nothing? Yunara, do you not want me anymore? We grew up together."I pushed him out of my house. "It's exactly because we grew up together that the things you did to me were so disgusting!"The door slammed shut in his face. That night, heavy rain fell.In the middle of the night, I got up to close the window. He was still standing downstairs, drenched by the rain.He looked up at me despondently, tears shimmering in his eyes.My grip tightened but I still closed the curtains. He came again when I

Zonday had received a direct admission from a college and did not have to take the college entrance exam. Thus, he had no scores.Which means… Camilla had no scores.Zonday desperately tried to remove the bracelet. But over time, the bracelet had tightened on his wrist. It wouldn't come off."This is impossible!" He gritted his teeth. "The bracelet can only be transferred to a family member. How can you transfer it to me?!""The person doesn't have to be blood-related. As long as I think of you as family, you can bear my misfortune for me.""What?!"He momentarily forgot about the bracelet, his eyes bloodshot."So… the reason you're so gentle and obedient lately is because…""Mm-hmm, it's all an act.""What?"Camilla appeared out of nowhere. She fearfully grabbed my wrist and yanked it.The bracelet easily fell off.She stared at the fake bracelet in disbelief. She said, her voice trembling, "I thought the bracelet can't be taken off once you wear it?"She brutally smashe

I calmly took the phone."Hello, this is Yunara Trent. Me? Top scorer? I see. Thank you. I'll consider it."After I hung up, no one said a word. After a long time, someone finally broke the silence."So when the teacher said the state's top scorer is in our class, she meant… you?""Probably.""How is that possible?!"Zonday grabbed my arm anxiously."Didn't you get zero points? How can you be the state's top scorer?!""Have you forgotten?" I stared at him. "If your score is at the top, the system hides your score.""But…""Why? Did you really think I would get zero points?""Of course you should get zero points!" Camilla interjected. She was starting to lose her composure."I submitted a blank… Ugh!"Luckily for her, Zonday reacted quickly and managed to cover her mouth in time. After the initial surprise, Camilla furiously stopped talking."Hey, the system doesn't just hide the score for the top scorer. It does so for second and third place too," a classmate reassured

"Zonday, what thugs? What are you talking about?"Mom looked at him in confusion. I clasped my hands together, begging him to keep quiet, but he turned to Mom and said coldly, "Auntie, you still haven't heard? Three days ago, your daughter skipped going home after school and had fun with a dozen thugs in an alley for over half an hour!"A stack of photos was thrown onto the bed. They seemed to be images captured by a dashcam. They clearly recorded the moment I was surrounded by the thugs. However, since they were just photos, they could be easily misinterpreted."I went out just now to obtain this evidence and was going to submit it to the police, but now it seems..."Zonday turned to me. "You have no self-respect!"With that, he took Camilla's hand and turned to leave.I hurried to the bedside."Mom, I didn't! I fought them! I merely got hurt, I..."Beep! Beep! The heartrate monitor let out shrill, rapid beeps.Doctors and nurses rushed in, shoving me out.I sat on the hosp
