Chapter Five

Avenne’s POV

“Breathe slowly. That’s it. Don’t move while I’m treating you.”

I kept my hands against the man’s chest as I watched his face carefully, trying to keep him calm even though I could see the fear in his eyes.

That had been my life since a month ago, since the day the world changed and I discovered that I had something inside me that I could not explain.

Ever since I saved the man a month ago, people had come to me whenever they needed help healing, and with every person I treated, the number of people who knew about my ability continued to grow.

I still did not understand everything about the System inside me, but I had learned how to use my healing ability better.

I focused on the man beneath my hands, watching as the strange energy moved through his body.

The System appeared in front of me.

[Poison detected.]

[Poison is spreading through the bloodstream.]

[Treatment in progress.]

I took a slow breath and continued treating him, carefully pushing the poison out of his body.

The man suddenly groaned, his face tightening in pain.

“Stay still,” I said calmly. “It will be over soon.”

I kept my hands against his chest until the strange feeling inside my body slowly disappeared.

Then the System appeared again. [Poison removed.]

I opened my eyes and looked at him.

His breathing was already becoming steadier, and the pale color on his face was slowly disappearing. “You’re going to be fine.”

He let out a weak breath and closed his eyes for a moment. “Thank you.”

I nodded and checked his pulse before placing my hand against his forehead.

His temperature had returned to normal.

I was about to tell him to rest when loud voices suddenly came from outside.

“President is here!”

“Our President is here!”

“The Underworld President is here!”

The man’s eyes immediately opened.

Around us, people began moving toward the front of the building, and within seconds, the place became noisy as everyone rushed outside to see who had arrived.

I heard more voices calling out the President’s name, followed by hurried footsteps and people greeting him.

I glanced toward the doorway for a moment, but I did not move.

I had heard a lot about the Underworld President during the past month, but I had never seen him before, and right now, I had a patient in front of me.

I needed to make sure he was completely fine before doing anything else.

I turned my attention back to the man and checked his pulse again.

It was steady.

I checked his breathing and then examined his eyes before finally stepping back.

“done.”

The man slowly sat up, looking much better than he had a few minutes ago. “Really?”

“Yes, but you still need to rest.”

He nodded and looked toward the doorway, clearly wanting to see the President like everyone else.

I turned around.

The room behind me was almost empty now because nearly everyone had gone to the front.

I walked toward the entrance, wondering what could make so many people gather just because one person had arrived.

When I reached the doorway, I looked toward the front.

Everyone had gathered there.

Some people stood at the sides while others had moved closer, leaving a clear path through the middle.

I followed their eyes.

Then I saw him.

I froze.

My eyes widened as I stared at the man standing at the front.

This man…

My heart suddenly began beating faster.

I knew that face.

I could never forget it.

He was the man I had saved a month ago.

The man I had found badly injured and covered in blood.

The man I had thought was going to die.

The same man who had disappeared after I saved him.

I stared at him as the people around him bowed their heads respectfully.

Then someone called his name again.

“Our President.”

My eyes remained fixed on him.

President?

No.

It couldn’t be but  the more I looked at him, the more certain I became.

This was him. The man I saved a month ago…was the Underworld President.

The woman who had been crying beside him was now standing a few steps away, watching me with a frightened expression.“What’s wrong with him?” I asked.“Just leave him alone!” she insisted.I frowned and turned back to the man.“If you know something about his condition, then tell me. I can’t help him if everyone keeps shouting without explaining anything.”I placed two fingers against his neck, trying to feel his pulse. It was there, but something about his breathing seemed unusual. His chest was rising slowly, and his body appeared completely relaxed.“How long has he been like this?” I asked.Nobody answered.I reached for my medical kit, which I had placed beside me, and leaned closer to examine his face.“Sir, can you hea

I have some matters to attend to there.”I frowned. “And why are you telling me?”“Because you’re coming with me.”I stared at him.“Excuse me?”He adjusted the file in his hand. “You’re my personal assistant now. You’ll accompany me whenever I have official duties outside this building.”I let out a dry laugh.“Did I agree to that?”He gave me a look. “Avenne, we have already discussed this.”“No, you discussed it. I disagreed.”“We don’t have time for another argument. The vehicle will be ready in fifteen minutes.”I folded my arms.“Then you should go without me.”He looked at me for a moment before placing the file on the table.“I need you to help me organise the supplies and record the agreements we’ll be making. My assistant is occupied with the security arrangements following the attack.”“Then

You’re going to make the wound worse.”The President ignored me and tried to sit up.I pressed my hand against his shoulder, forcing him back onto the bed.“Are you planning to tear open your stitches? Because that’s exactly what you’re doing.”He gave me an irritated look.“How much longer?”“Until I’m satisfied that the bleeding has stopped.”“That could take forever.”“Then you should have thought about that before throwing yourself in front of a knife.”He fell silent.I carefully removed the blood-soaked cloth from his side. The wound was deeper than I had first thought. Although I had managed to stop the bleeding, his movements kept putting pressure on it.I cleaned the area again and reached for a fresh bandage.“Does it hurt?” I asked.“No.”I looked at him.“You’re a terrible liar.”“I’ve had worse.”“That doesn’t mean you should ignore this one.”Before he could respond, someone knocked sharply on the door.“Come in

However, I want you to stay around for a while. Don’t go wandering outside, and make sure you remain somewhere safe.”The man nodded, looking relieved.“Thank you, Doctor. Did you send her away?”He didn’t answer immediately.I stared at him, waiting. Then I let out a small laugh.“Really?”He looked at me.“What?”“Nothing. I should have known.”“Avenne, listen to me.”“No, it’s fine. You don’t have to explain anything.” I shook my head. “I already know what happened. You went back there, saw her crying, and suddenly everything she did became
