The door clicked shut behind me, and I pressed my back flat against it like I could physically hold the rest of the world out. Like if I pushed hard enough, the wood would meld to my spine and seal me in here forever — away from the hallway, away from the stairs, away from him.

My legs gave before I made the conscious decision to sit.

I slid down slowly, the door rough against my shoulder blades, until I hit the floor. The carpet was soft under my palms. I stared at nothing — at the pale stretc

Hazel pov I sat at the small kitchen table in Maya’s house. The kitchen smelled like butter and sugar. Maya’s mother just took a tray of cookies out of the oven. They were chocolate chip. The chocolate was still melting. I took a bite. It was warm and sweet. I closed my eyes and smiled. For the first time today, I felt safe. I felt normal.Maya was sitting across from me. She was laughing at something her little sister, Lily, said. Lily was twelve. She was loud and funny. She had white flour on her nose. Maya tried to wipe it off, but Lily pushed her hand away."Leave me alone," Lily said, but she was smiling."You look like a ghost," Maya teased her.I laughed with them. It felt good to laugh. My house was always so quiet. Leo was always working or worrying about me. And now Silas was there. Silas made my house feel small. He made the air feel heavy. But here, in Maya’s kitchen, the air was light. I did not have to worry about my aunt calling for money. I did not have to worry about

Hazel's POVBy Valerie RayI left the house. The front door clicked shut behind me. I locked it twice. Leo told me to be careful. He told me to avoid dangerous places. He told me to avoid boys. I sighed when I thought about that. He treated me like a baby. But I knew why he did it. He was scared. I was scared too, even if I didn't want to admit it.I walked down the street. I walked fast. My shoes hit the concrete hard. Step, step, step. The sound was loud in my ears. The sun was shining, but the air felt cold. I put my hands deep in my jacket pockets. I kept my head down, but my eyes moved everywhere.I felt it again. That weird feeling on the back of my neck. The feeling that someone was watching me. I stopped walking. I turned around fast. I looked down the street. I saw a parked car. I saw a trash can. I saw a bird on a wooden fence. I didn't see a person. But the feeling stayed. It was heavy. It made my stomach hurt.I started walking again. I walked faster this time. I looked at

HazelWhat did my aunt want this time? Money, of course. But not just a few dollars. She wanted the deed. The only property our parents left for us. It was a small piece of land out of town. It was the last real thing we had from them. And she wanted it.She was broke. Completely desperate. She spent all the insurance money years ago. She bought stupid things. Expensive bags, trips she did not need, cars she ended up crashing. She threw the money away like it was trash. Now she had nothing left. Her bank accounts were empty. So, she came crawling back to us. She wanted to take our last piece of memory and sell it.I hated her. I really did. But I hated her daughter just as much. My cousin. My cousin was a sneaky bitch. She was exactly like her mother. Greedy, mean, and fake. When I lived in their house, my life was a living hell. My cousin made sure of it. She used to steal my things all the time. If I had a nice shirt, it went missing. If Leo bought me a small necklace for my birthda

Leo stood at my bedroom door. He had his hand on the frame. He was about to leave. Then he stopped and turned his head. He looked right at me."Did Auntie call you?" he asked. The room went cold. It felt like all the warm air just got sucked out of the window. My chest got tight. I could not breathe right. Just hearing that name did this to me. It always did. Auntie.I shook my head fast. "No," I said. My voice was small. It sounded weak. "No, she did not call me."Leo watched my face. He was checking to see if I was lying. He knew I hid things sometimes. Like the asthma attack at school. But I was not lying about this. I would never lie about her. If she called me, I would panic. I would tell him right away.He let out a hard breath. "Good," he said. His voice was low and rough. "Keep it that way."He did not say anything else. He just turned and walked down the hall. I heard his heavy steps on the wood floor. I heard his bedroom door shut. Then the house was quiet again. But I was n

Hazel's POVMaya ran out the front door. I heard the heavy wood click shut. I heard her car engine start. The loud noise filled the quiet street. Then, the car drove away. The sound faded into nothing. She was gone. I stood in the hallway for a long time. I did not move. The house felt different right away. It felt very empty. It felt very cold. Maya always brought noise. She brought warmth. She made the house feel alive. Now, there was only silence. The silence was heavy. It pressed down on my skin.I rubbed my arms. I felt a chill. I did not like this quiet. I knew I was not alone. Silas was still here. He was somewhere in the house. I could not see him. I could not hear him. But I could feel him. It was a strange feeling. It was like a weight in the air. I did not want to see him. I did not want to talk to him. I turned around fast. I walked back up the stairs. I went straight to my room. I shut the door behind me. I turned the lock. I heard the small click. I needed a safe space.

The room was dark. My laptop screen was black. The only light came from the street. It made long, thin shadows on my floor. The house was very quiet. Maya was next to me in bed. She was a heater. She was breathing slow. We had eaten too many chips. We had talked too much. We were both dead to the world. Then, the noise started. It was Maya’s phone. It was on the nightstand. It was buzzing. Buzz. Buzz. Buzz. It sounded like a drill. It was loud in the quiet room.Maya jumped up. She was like a spring. Her eyes were wide. Her hair was a mess. She grabbed the phone. She swiped the screen fast.A green light blinked on her phone. It was bright. It was ugly. Maya looked at the screen. Her face went white. She looked like she had seen a ghost."Shit," she whispered. She said it like a prayer. "Shit, shit, shit.""Maya?" I groaned. My head felt heavy. "What time is it?"She did not answer. She did not look at me. She just moved.Maya was in a panic. She tried to get off the bed. She was fast

The movie on my laptop screen was a bright, colorful rom-com, but I was having a hard time following the plot.Maya was sitting cross-legged on my bed, her fingers perpetually in a bag of salt-and-vinegar chips, laughing at the onscreen antics of a woman who couldn't choose between two equally hand

The door clicked shut, and I leaned against it, the cool wood a sharp contrast to the heat still radiating from my skin. My heart was doing something frantic and irregular against my ribs, a trapped bird in a cage it didn't understand. What was that?I pressed the back of my hand to my cheek. It wa

Teasing Hazel was fun. Damn, she looked sexy in her pajamas. She was clueless about how hot she made me. I saw her blush when I went behind her in the kitchen. Her smell was heavenly, like fresh flowers mixed with something sweet that got me hard right away. But I couldn't help it. She was driving

The scrape of bare feet against the hardwood floor was the only warning she got.Hazel heard him push off the kitchen island. His footsteps were quiet, unhurried, deliberate. Each step sounded like a countdown in her ears. Three. Two. One.He stopped directly behind her.He was so close that the am
