The assassin’s body was still warm on the ground when I turned to Darius.

“You knew.”

He didn’t flinch. Just looked straight at me.

The black ring sat in the dirt between us—almost like proof.

“You knew my brother was going to die.”

No change in his face.

“I remembered it.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only answer I have.”

I moved closer, feeling the anger rise.

“You knew when and where it would happen. You knew someone was out to get him.”

“I remembered pieces.”

“Pieces?” My voice was louder now.

“You remembered enough to knock me out of the arrow’s path, enough to recognize the ring, enough to know my brother might die. But you never remember anything helpful when I ask who killed me?”

His jaw clenched.

“Seren.”

“No.” I jabbed my finger toward the dead man. “You knew something like this was coming.”

“I suspected.”

“You suspected?”

“I wasn’t sure.”

“You could have told me.”

“I didn’t know if telling you would change anything.”

“It already changed!” My voice cracked. “My brother’s alive.”

Darius glanced toward Kael, who was being led back to the palace by guards.

“Yes.”

“And now someone tried to kill him.”

“Yes.”

“So tell me everything you remember.”

He went silent.

I let out a bitter laugh. This was typical.

“Of course.”

I turned away, but he grabbed my wrist.

“Wait.” I looked down at his hand, then back at him.

“You keep doing that.”

“Doing what?”

“Stopping me whenever I get close to the truth.”

His grip loosened.

“I don’t know the truth.”

“Then what do you know?”

He stared at me—didn’t blink. Just let the silence hang.

“I know that in the first life, I trusted the wrong people.”

That threw me.

“Who?”

“I don’t remember.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I expect you to understand that remembering something isn’t the same as understanding it.”

He let go of my wrist.

“I remember your execution. The accusations. Trying to reach you.”

His voice dropped.

“But everything before that is broken.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.” He looked toward the palace again. “Sometimes I remember things that never happened. Sometimes I forget things that did.”

I watched him.

“You could be lying.”

“Yes.”

“You could be protecting someone.”

“Yes.”

“You could have been the reason I died.”

He met my eyes, held the gaze.

“Yes.”

That answer hit harder than I expected. He didn’t protest. Didn’t argue. Just accepted it.

“Why?” I could barely get the word out.

Darius looked away.

“Because I don’t know if I was the man who failed to save you…” Then he looked at me again. “…or the man who helped put you on that platform.”

Something cold settled between us. For the first time, I saw how much that idea scared him—not what I thought of him, but what he thought of himself.

After sunset, we made our way back to the palace.

The healers offered to treat Darius’s shoulder and mine. We both refused.

“You’re bleeding again,” I said.

“It’ll stop.”

“It didn’t stop the first time.”

“I’ve survived worse.”

“And you’re still acting like an idiot.”

He looked at me. “You’re pretty bold for someone I could kill.”

“You haven’t killed me yet.”

His mouth twitched, almost a smile. “Dangerous confidence.”

“I’ve died once already.”

He went quiet. I regretted saying it. Darius dropped his gaze.

“Don’t say that.”

“Why?”

“Because I remember.”

My chest tightened.

He turned to the window. I saw the bandage around his shoulder was soaked with blood.

“Sit.”

He ignored me.

“Darius.”

He sighed. “You really like ordering me around.”

“Sit down.”

This time he actually did it. I grabbed fresh bandages and knelt beside him.

When I peeled away the old cloth, the wound was open again.

“You should’ve let the healer deal with it.”

“I don’t like healers.”

“Why?”

“They ask too many questions.”

I shot him a look. “You’re not exactly easy to understand.”

“Neither are you.”

Our eyes met, and something warm passed between us. I looked away first.

I cleaned the wound. Darius didn’t flinch.

“You’re pretending it doesn’t hurt.”

“It doesn’t.”

“You’re a terrible liar.”

“I’ve been told.”

I wrapped the bandage. My fingers brushed his skin, and his breathing changed. So did mine. We froze.

Then I felt Vesper stir—not with fear this time, but recognition. He hurts.

I stilled. Darius’s eyes narrowed.

“Your wolf.”

“What about her?”

“She reacted.”

“So did yours.”

His expression shifted, and I realized Umbra was close enough for me to feel him. Something dark and warm pressed at the edge of my mind—protective, not threatening.

Vesper moved closer, and I pulled my hand away. Darius caught it.

Neither of us said anything. His hand was warm around mine.

“You’re afraid of me,” he said quietly.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I remember hating you.”

His thumb lightly traced my knuckles.

“And now?”

I couldn’t answer. He held my gaze.

Something changed. The room faded.

Snow. Endless snow.

I couldn’t breathe. I wasn’t in the palace anymore—somewhere else, three years from now.

Screaming, then my own voice.

“Darius!”

He was there, hands covered in blood. My blood. Kneeling in the snow, holding me.

My body was limp in his arms.

“No.”

He was crying. That shocked me more than anything—the sight of his tears. He pressed his forehead against mine.

“Stay with me.”

I couldn’t move or speak. His arms tightened.

“I told you I’d come.”

A man’s voice yelled behind him.

“Alpha! We have to go!”

Darius ignored him. “She isn’t dead.”

“Alpha—”

“She isn’t dead!”

His voice broke.

Then I saw it. A hand, holding a sealed document. A silver crown flashed in the moonlight. Someone whispered:

“She must die before she remembers.”

The vision ended.

I gasped, back in the room.

Darius gripped my shoulders.

“Seren?”

I couldn’t breathe. He looked afraid.

“What did you see?”

I just stared. Blood. Snow. His arms around my body. His tears. The crown. The voice.

I tried to speak—nothing came out.

“Seren.”

I shook my head.

“I…”

My voice wouldn’t work.

Darius’s hands squeezed gently.

“What did you see?”

I looked into his eyes. For once, I didn’t see the ruthless Alpha from my past. I saw a man, kneeling in snow, begging a dead woman to stay.

“You were there,” I whispered.

He lost all color.

“Where?”

“When I died.”

He stopped breathing.

“You saw it?”

I nodded. He searched my face.

“What else?”

I couldn’t say it. Not yet. I’d seen something that didn’t match the story I remembered.

Darius wasn’t lurking in the shadows at my execution. He was holding me afterward. And he cried.

I pulled my hand away.

“Seren…”

I stood up. He reached for me, but I backed away.

“Don’t.”

His hand dropped.

We were quiet.

Darius looked down, voice barely a whisper.

“I failed you once.”

I watched him.

He met my eyes.

“I won’t do it again.”

  • THE ALPHA I WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO LOVE    CHAPTER 20 : LUCIAN WANTS ME BACK

“Ask him what he did the night you died.”Lucian’s words stuck with me, echoing long after he left the archive. I stood there by the table, just staring at the execution record in my hands. The ink had faded a bit, but my name—Seren Vale—was still sharp. Execution authorization pending review. That date matched the day I died.Behind me, Darius shifted against the wall, his shoulder stiff under his shirt. He’d refused to let the healer look at it, insisting he’d survived worse. I honestly wasn’t sure anymore if it was stubbornness or him hiding something from me.“What did Lucian mean?” I said.Darius’s jaw clenched. “He wants you to doubt me.”“That’s not an answer.”“No,” he said, meeting my eyes. “It isn’t.”That honesty unsettled me more than any lie could.I folded the record and slid it into my pocket. “Then I guess I’ll have to find the answer myself.”I brushed past him.“Seren.” I stopped in the doorway, but didn’t turn.“Don’t meet Lucian alone,” he called.A bitter laugh sl

  • THE ALPHA I WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO LOVE    CHAPTER 19 : TOO CLOSE TO HATE YOU

“Bring him in.” Darius’s words shot down the hall, snapping everyone to attention. I waited at his side, still clutching the note from the healer’s room. The Alpha must not learn what the girl was before she returned. I hated that line. Every time I thought about it, my skin crawled, like someone was rooting around inside my memories, stirring up things I’d rather forget. And what bothered me more—Darius seemed to get how dangerous it was, better than I did.A few minutes later, the guards shoved Lucian between them. He looked furious. “Is this how you treat your guests now? Your men almost broke my shoulder.”“You were seen entering the archive right before someone attacked an innocent man," Darius said. "You can complain after you explain yourself.”Lucian shot a look at me. “Seren, tell him.”“Tell him what?”“That I came to warn you.”I just stared at him. Lucian hadn’t changed since my first life—messy dark hair, expensive clothes, always with that cocksure smile, like the world

  • THE ALPHA I WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO LOVE    CHAPTER 18 : THE PROPHECY HAS TWO NAMES

By sunrise, I’d figured out two things about Darius Thorncrest. First, he could command an army without ever raising his voice. And second, he could lie straight to my face and somehow make me feel like I was the one being cruel.I found him in the command room, hunched over a map, his coffee going cold. He looked wrecked—honestly, so did I. Neither of us had slept. “You have until sunrise,” I'd said last night. Sunrise was here. Time to get answers.“What did you burn?” I asked. He didn’t even glance up. “Good morning to you, too.”“Don’t try to charm your way out.”“Wasn’t planning to.”“Great. So what was on that parchment?”He finally looked at me. He hesitated—his shoulders all bunched up under his black shirt, eyes guarded—but then he put down the map.“It had a location on it,” he said.I waited. He exhaled. “The old sanctuary beyond the northern ridge.”“The altar?”“Possibly.”“So why burn it?”“Because the location was right next to a second mark. I recognized it. I didn’t w

  • THE ALPHA I WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO LOVE    CHAPTER 17 : I AM NOT YOUR PRISONER

“The girl must reach the altar alive.”I stared at the message again—a third time—hoping something in those words would shift. They didn’t. The black symbol pressed into the wax glared up at me, familiar from my mother’s records, from that sealed chamber beneath her grave, from the bodies of men who tried to keep me quiet. Now, an army surrounded Bloodmoon territory. Someone wanted me, alive, brought to an altar.I looked at Darius.“Where is it?”He folded up the parchment, calm as ever. “We need to question the prisoner first.”“That’s not what I asked.”“I heard you.”“Then answer me.”His jaw clenched. The guards by the door exchanged nervous glances, but I barely registered them. All I saw was Darius—the man who’d somehow become the center of every mystery in my life.He knew something. I saw it in the way his shoulders tensed, his grip tightened on the parchment, the flicker of fear that crossed his face when anyone mentioned my death. I was catching up to his tells now—the litt

  • THE ALPHA I WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO LOVE    CHAPTER 16 : UNDER HIS COMMAND

The eastern gate rattled again—another удар of the enemy’s battering ram. Dust drifted from the ceiling. Somewhere outside, men screamed, steel rang, and the warning horns blared through the chaos.I gripped the war table so hard my knuckles ached.“They’re not here for the kingdom. They’re here for you.” Darius’s words wouldn’t leave me alone.Three thousand soldiers were parked around Bloodmoon, but they’d barely bothered our best defenses. They ignored the northern watchtower. The western road was untouched. They focused everything on the eastern gate.Forget conquest. This was about me.I turned to Darius. “Why do they want me alive?”He stood at the open window, his dark coat snapping in the wind. His face was unreadable, but his fingers dug into the stone ledge.“You heard what the scout said,” he answered. “The High Council ordered you taken alive.”“That’s not good enough.” “It’s all I’ve got right now.”“Then get more.”He looked at me sharply—finally a reaction. We said not

  • THE ALPHA I WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO LOVE    CHAPTER 15 : THEY CAME FOR ME

The prophecy wouldn’t let me go. It kept burning in my mind—over and over again, the same words: The woman who returns will become the death of the Alpha she loves. I’d read it so many times, it felt engraved inside my skull.Darius stood only a few feet away, sword drawn, his eyes scanning the trees by my mother’s grave. Somewhere in the dark, our attackers had started to slip away. I could hear the guards calling to each other, searching the grounds, but honestly? I barely noticed. My attention was glued to Darius. His family had protected that prophecy for generations. He’d known about the black symbol. He’d had my mother’s pendant. And now, according to him, maybe the prophecy wasn’t even complete. What else was he hiding from me?“Look at me,” I said.He turned, quiet but tense.“Tell me the truth.”“Seren, we need to leave. There could still be men out here.”“I’m not going anywhere until you answer me.”His jaw clenched. “Not here.”“Then pick a place and get talking, because y
