Earlene

Calculating the exact day a kingdom will collapse is a miserable way to spend a morning, but someone had to do it.

The protective magic in my father’s bloodline was supposed to last for centuries. I gave it three weeks. Four, if the starving feral beasts in the woods decided to take their time.

"You’re doing it again."

I didn't pull my hands away from the freezing warding stone. I recognized the gruff, exhausted voice of the courtyard captain. "Doing what, Marcus?"

"Staring at the rocks like they're going to speak to you," he muttered, his heavy boots stopping right behind me. "You aren't supposed to be out here, Earlene. The King wants the surroundings cleared."

"The stone is dead, Marcus," I said, finally turning to face him. I held up my fingers, showing him the gray, brittle ash that had just rubbed off the monolith. "The rot is eating right through it."

Marcus flinched. He looked around frantically, lowering his voice to a harsh hiss. "Keep your voice down. Do you want to start a panic before the convoy even arrives?"

"I want us to survive," I countered, keeping my tone perfectly even. "Does my father actually know the barrier won't hold another month? Or are his advisors still lying to him?"

Marcus rubbed his jaw, looking ten years older than his actual age. "Your father is preparing to negotiate with the Alpha of the North. He has enough on his mind. He doesn't need you playing scholar out here today."

"You can say it," I offered dryly. "He doesn't need his bastard daughter getting in the way."

"I didn't say that."

"You thought it." I dusted the ash off my dress. "It doesn't matter what you call me. The Alpha won't care about royal titles anyway. If this barrier falls, he'll just let the beasts tear us apart and take the ruins for free."

"Just go inside," Marcus pleaded, the harshness dropping entirely from his voice. He looked genuinely scared. "Please. We're all terrified today. Don't make this harder than it has to be."

"I'm not the one making it hard," I pointed out.

"Captain!" a panicked voice shrieked from the western watchtower. "Open the gates! Open them now! They're here!"

Marcus paled. He drew his iron sword, his hand trembling so badly the metal rattled against his armor. "Get inside," he barked at me, his brief moment of kindness vanishing into sheer survival panic. "Now!"

But I didn't move.

The heavy iron gates groaned open. There were no heralds. No trumpets. Just the terrifying, synchronized sound of a northern army marching into our courtyard in absolute silence.

"Stand at attention!" Marcus roared to the men on the walls, trying to project a courage I knew he didn't possess. "Show them the strength of the South!"

No one had a chance to show anything.

The moment the lead carriage crossed the threshold into the courtyard, the oxygen was sucked entirely out of the air. It felt as if the sky itself had collapsed on top of us.

"Gods," Marcus choked out.

He dropped his sword. His hands flew to his throat. He hit his knees with a sickening thud, gasping desperately for air that was no longer there.

"Marcus!" I took a step toward him, but the crushing weight slammed into my own chest, violently forcing the breath from my lungs.

All around me, the screaming started. It wasn't the sound of a battle; it was the sound of complete, violent submission.

Every single royal guard, every elite werewolf my father had stationed in the courtyard, was dropping to the dirt. They were whimpering, pressing their faces into the mud.

The Alpha hadn't even stepped out of his carriage, and his aura was actively crushing the life out of an entire garrison.

My knees buckled. I hit the rough surface of the warding stone, the jagged edges tearing into my back.

‘Kneel,’ every human instinct in my body screamed. ‘Just kneel.’

"No," I whispered to myself, my voice barely a rasp.

I had spent nineteen years keeping my head down. I had made myself invisible to survive my sisters’ cruelty and my father’s neglect. I refused to grovel in the dirt for a tyrant I had never even met.

I dug my fingers into the crumbling stone behind me. My muscles screamed in agony as I forced my legs to lock.

I pushed myself up, my boots slipping in the mud, dragging my spine against the rock until I was standing upright again.

The pressure intensified like a weight trying to snap me in half. I squeezed my eyes shut and forced a breath through my teeth.

The carriage door creaked open.

"Alpha!" one of the guards sobbed from the ground. "Please!"

A black boot stepped out.

I gripped the stone, kept my chin raised, and stared. Let him try to break me.

Earlene I stared at him. I wanted to look shocked. I wanted to look intimidated by the fact that the Alpha of the North had just enter my room for the first time. But the initial surprise quickly melted into a hot irritation. I looked at his dark leather armor, his broad shoulders, and the lethal, predatory grace he carried in every single movement. Then, my eyes dropped to the ceramic plate he was holding in his large hand. He looked completely out of place. He was a ruthless warlord who commanded armies and conquered nations, yet here he was, carrying a steaming dinner plate of roasted beef and potatoes like a common tavern servant. He set the plate down on the small wooden table in front of me. "Jane said you were being stubborn," he muttered. His voice was a low, even rumble. He did not sound angry, just deeply annoyed that he had to deal with this. "I am not being stubborn," I fired back, refusing to shrink back into my chair. "I am asking for basic decency. I told her I w

EarleneI was completely flustered, gobsmacked by the sudden, intimate shift in the air between us. The sheer force of his presence made me realize I was playing a very dangerous game with a man who could devour me whole.Unable to formulate a single coherent response, I took a quick step back, breaking his magnetic pull."Excuse me," I whispered, my voice betraying my sudden nerves.I turned on my heel and practically fled from the library, leaving him standing there in the quiet room.Three days had passed since I practically fled from the library. My cheeks still burned whenever I remembered how Thorne had stepped into my personal space, how his voice had dropped, and how he had asked me how I wanted to be treated. I had no answer for him. My mind had completely blanked under the intense weight of his stare. Instead of standing my ground, I had retreated to my chamber like a frightened child.Since then, he had not come looking for me. The maddening routine of my isolation settled

Earlene I stared at Vane’s broad chest, my heart beating a rapid rhythm against my ribs. He did not budge. I could see the absolute determination set in the hard lines of his face. He was a Vanguard. He only listened to Thorne. It was obvious I could not order him to do anything. And trying to push past him would be entirely useless. I took a slow breath, attempting to change my approach and ease the tension in the corridor. "Do you also stay in this fortress?" I asked, keeping my voice level. Vane looked down at me. "No," he gave a clipped response. "Then where do you stay?" I tried again. "The outer barracks?" "No." I pressed my lips into a thin line. His responses were short, flat, and completely unsatisfied my curiosity. It was maddening. His attitude was frustratingly similar to his Alpha’s. They both communicated in walls of silence, refusing to yield an inch of information. I realized he was never going to give me a real answer. He was just blocking my path

  • THE ALPHA'S FATED WITCH    CHAPTER 7: Push

EarleneI was still staring at the door when it swung open again. For a brief, foolish second, I thought Thorne had come back to finish whatever he wanted to say.Instead, a robust, older woman marched into the room. She wore a thick grey gown that buttoned tightly all the way up to her neck. Her greying hair was pulled back into a knot, and her face was set in an unsmiling expression. She didn't knock and she didn't hesitate. She walked straight toward me, stopping only a few feet away."I am Jane," she said. Her voice was brisk and entirely devoid of warmth. "I am the head maid of this wing. I have been assigned to prepare you for the evening."I looked into her cold, evaluating eyes. It made me wonder if the freezing temperatures of the North did more than just chill the stone. It seemed to seep right into the people, making them as unfeeling and cold as the atmosphere outside. "Thank you, Jane," I said quietly, trying to maintain a polite tone. "But I don't need much preparation.

  • THE ALPHA'S FATED WITCH    CHAPTER 6: The Opposite Wing

Earlene The carriage finally jerked to a halt. My legs were completely numb from the hours of riding in pitch-black silence. I had spent the entire journey bracing myself against the leather seat, expecting the monster sitting across from me to speak. He never did. He just sat in the dark, an unmovable shadow, ignoring my existence entirely. The carriage door swung open. The biting northern wind rushed in, slicing right through my thin dress. I shivered violently and stepped out into the snow. I had spent my whole life hearing rumors about the North. The stories claimed Thorne ruled from a dark, frozen dungeon filled with bones and ice. The reality standing in front of me was very different. It was a sprawling castle built from heavy dark stone. Snow covered the high roofs and the training yards, but the place was alive. Bright, roaring fires burned in the tall windows, casting a warm yellow glow across the courtyard. It looked incredibly strong, built to withstand the en

  • THE ALPHA'S FATED WITCH    CHAPTER 5: The Final Ghost

EarleneI had exactly one hour to pack my entire life. My hands were remarkably steady as I pulled my bag from under the narrow cot. I did not have much to take. Two extra dresses, a wool cloak that had belonged to my mother, and three thick books on military history and architecture I had quietly taken from the royal library over the years. I folded the dresses and placed them at the bottom of the bag.I was leaving the South. The reality of it was that simple. My father had traded me for an army, and in doing so, he had accidentally given me the only viable escape route from a dying kingdom. The wooden door to my room pushed open. No one bothered to knock.Lecia and Leith walked into the cramped space. Their wide crimson dresses practically filled the entire room, forcing them to stand awkwardly near the foot of my bed. The sheer terror they had shown in the throne room was completely gone. Now that they were safe, their usual cruelty had returned.Lecia stepped close to me. She re
