Selene read the words carved into Aldric's wall twice.

The second time, she noticed how deep the letters went. Whoever had carved them had driven the blade hard enough to leave splintered stone around the edges.

One door closes. Another always opens. I'll see you at the next one.

“He killed Aldric,” Kael said.

His voice was flat, but disbelief sat beneath it.

“After everything. After offering him a real trial instead of execution.”

“Maybe that's exactly why.”

Marcus stood near the entrance, arm

The rider barely made it across the courtyard. Her horse was white with sweat, its flanks heaving hard enough to make the saddle creak. Her boots dragged over the stones as she stumbled forward, face grey with exhaustion.Kael caught her before her knees gave out."Tell me everything."She gripped his arm and fought for a breath."The Veyknar seal failed three nights ago."Her voice cracked."Not slowly. All at once."Selene stepped closer."What happened?""Councillor Ferrow and half his guard were already dead when Edrick and Fenna arrived. Whatever came through the door didn't stay to finish the rest."The rider swallowed."It left."Selene's stomach tightened."Where?""South."The answer came too quickly. The rider looked at Selene, and the fear in her eyes made Selene's chest constrict."Edrick tracked it for two days before sending me ahead. He says it moves like nothing he's ever seen."She wiped a trembling hand across her mouth."Fast. Patient. Deliberate."Kael's hand tight

Kael broke the seal and unfolded the letter. The study quieted as he began to read.«To whoever now holds Ashwood's seal—Word travels faster than any of us would like through territories that share old blood and older fears. We have heard of your door, your binding, your two heirs who chose a burden instead of running from it.We write because the Veyknar Reaches has carried a door of its own for considerably longer than your territory has existed as anything worth naming on a map.Our keepers are dying. Not from age. From something that has begun stirring beneath our sealed threshold. It started three months ago, around the same time your own door began to stir before your crisis came to a head.We do not have a bloodline capable of renewing our binding. We never did.Our door was sealed by other means, and those means are now failing. We have exhausted every option available to us short of abandoning the territory altogether. We ask plainly because pride has become a luxury we can

A trial means questions. A dead man means silence.”Selene shook her head. She kept staring at the message, turning each word over in her mind.“That isn't Vale's style.”Kael glanced at her.“He wanted accountability, not convenience. He said it himself in the chamber. He'd rather face judgment than keep being a convenient villain.”“People lie,” Kael said.“They do.”Selene touched one of the carved letters, careful not to disturb th

Dawn came to Ashwood three hours later.Selene stood at the chamber's threshold, watching the first pale strip of sunlight creep down the long tunnel stairs. It was strange to see morning again after everything that had happened below the earth.Stranger still to realize she had a future to wake up to.She hadn't been sure of that last night.Kael found her there.Exhaustion had settled into every line of his face, darkening the skin beneath his eyes, but something steadier sat underneath it now. He looked tired. He also looked alive.“You should rest,” he said. “The binding will hold. Veyra says it's stable.”“I will.”Selene kept her eyes on the light.“I just needed a moment first.”Kael lowered himself onto the cold stone beside her. His shoulder came close enough that she could feel the warmth through their clothes. For a while, neither of them spoke. The bond between them felt different now. Not louder. Deeper. It was no longer just the connection they'd known before. Whatever h

The chamber went utterly still.Every linked hand in the circle tightened at once."Corvain."Veyra barely breathed the name.Horror and disbelief crossed her face."You went in.""I went in," Corvain said. Her voice sounded wrong.Something vast and ancient moved beneath it, pressing against every word as though the Devourer itself had become part of the space between her breaths."While your attention was on sealing your precious heirs into the binding, I slipped through the gap the twins left behind."A bitter edge entered her voice."I had hoped to finally become what I always intended. A true vessel. Strong enough to hold the Devourer's power on my own terms, from the inside, where no one could tear me out again."Selene kept her breathing steady. The binding hummed beneath her ribs, familiar enough to reassure her but different enough to make her wary.A third presence pressed against its edges."And?"Corvain gave a quiet laugh. There was no amusement in it."And your little se

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN LUNA   Chapter Seventy-Seven: What the Moon Demanded Again

By the time moonrise approached, the chamber barely resembled the place they had entered hours earlier.Veyra had carved fresh symbols into the stone floor, forming a wide circle around the black door. Silver light ran through the grooves, catching along every cut like veins beneath the skin of the stone.Three bodies deep, the pack formed a ring around the chamber.Their hands were linked.Their faces were drawn with exhaustion, but no one stepped away.Selene stood at the threshold with Aria beside her. Kael remained just beyond the circle, close enough that she could reach him, but far enough to serve as an anchor rather than another vessel.Veyra looked from Selene to Aria."When the moon reaches its peak, the door will open fully, whether we're ready or not."Her gaze hardened."You must already be in position. Already bonded to the binding. Once that moment comes, there will be no second attempt if this fails."Selene swallowed."We understand."Aria's fingers slipped into hers.
