The Lie That Worked

Finn didn't come back by noon.

By sunset, he didn't come back.

By moonrise, Mara came back alone.

She came in wolf form first — grey, panting, snow stuck in fur, blood on back leg — then shifted at door of Luna room, naked, shaking, not from cold.

Kael was outside before I could stand, bare chest in snow, claws out, gold eyes black.

"Where is pup?" he said, voice that made snow fall off roofs.

Mara coughed, holding leg. "He is with North. They kept him."

Through bond, I felt Kael's wolf — _rip, kill, go down mountain now_.

I ran out, grey dress, no shoes again, healer shouting behind, and grabbed his arm.

"Wait," I said. "Mara — did he lie? Did he tell?"

Mara looked at me, eyes wet, and nodded, then shook head. "He did lie. Perfect lie. I heard from rocks. He told Joren east path empty, mountain path full of 20 traps. Joren believed. But then — North Alpha, Rorik — he came."

Snow went quiet.

Kael went still.

Mara continued, voice shaking. "Rorik smelled Luna's fur on Finn. Your fur, Luna. He said — 'Stoneclaw Luna smells like burnt soup now, not honey, so she is hiding. Pup brings her scent, good.' Then he said Finn must stay to prove east path safe. If Finn stays, they know Stoneclaw won't trap east path if their own pup is there."

"No," I whispered. "Finn is hostage."

"Double hostage," Mara said. "They keep him until full moon. If east path really has no traps, they let him live and join North. If east path has traps and Finn lied —"

She didn't finish.

Kael punched pine tree, claws leaving deep marks, bark flying. "I sent pup to die."

"You sent double spy," I said, touching his back, feeling bond storm — _guilt, rage, pup ours_.

"No, Kael," Mara said. "Finn knew. Before they took him, he looked at my rock where I hid. He smiled. He knew I was there. He shouted loud — 'East path safe, I swear on Luna's fur!' Loud, so I would hear. He wanted them to keep him. So we know they believe."

Kael breathed hard, steam coming out.

Elder Corvin came, staff banging, face angry but also pale, because Finn was his grand-nephew.

"Logic again," he muttered. "Pup logic. Now we have no pup and North still comes east path. 20 wolves with our pup in front — we cannot snap tree traps, we will kill pup too!"

Pack gathered, 30 wolves, man and wolf form, looking at Kael, waiting for Alpha decision.

I stepped out from behind Kael, feet already blue, but I didn't care. I still wore grey wool, fur around shoulders, mark tight.

"Then we don't snap tree traps," I said.

Everyone looked at me.

Mara frowned. "Luna?"

"North thinks east path safe, and they bring Finn in front to prove safe," I said, voice shaking but thinking fast, human village thinking, not wolf thinking. "So if we snap trees, we hit Finn. So we don't snap. We let North walk past bent trees."

Elder Corvin banged staff. "Let them walk? Then they reach Luna room!"

"No," I said, looking at Kael, gold eyes meeting mine. "We let them walk past trees, but we set new trap behind trees. Not tree trap. Human trap."

Kael tilted head, listening.

"In village, when we wanted to catch fox who steals chicken, we didn't put trap on path where fox walks," I said. "We put chicken past trap. Fox walks past trap to get chicken, then we pull rope behind him, cage falls."

Mara's eyes went wide. "Luna trap behind?"

"Yes," I said. "We let North walk past bent pines, thinking safe. We hide behind. When they pass, we pull ropes — nets, not trees. Nets from river fishing. We used to have nets?"

Kael nodded slowly, gold eyes flickering gold-black-gold, thinking. "We have fishing nets. Old, strong."

"We put nets behind them, so when they try to run back when they see Luna room is empty — because I won't be in Luna room — they get tangled. Like fish."

Elder woman who blessed marking stepped forward, bowl in hand. "Where will Luna be then?"

Kael looked at me, already knowing.

"River," I said. "Where ice broken. North hates cold water, you said. They won't look there. I will hide near river, under fur, with black sap again, so no scent."

"No," Kael said instantly, claws out. "River cold, you get blue feet again, sick."

"Not in river," I said. "Near river. On rock where you bit rocks for 3 days. You said that rock is safe, hidden."

Through bond, I felt his memory — _cold rock, biting, thinking of Luna heat_.

He didn't like, but nodded after.

Elder Corvin stared at me, then at Kael, then at Mara's bloody leg.

"Human Luna sets trap behind trap," he muttered. "First snow hole, then bent tree, now net behind. Human tricks never end."

"Will it work?" Mara asked, holding leg.

Kael looked at pack, at snow falling, at east path that now had his pup as hostage.

"It will work because North thinks we are wolves who only dig holes," he said, voice Alpha loud now, making snow shake. "But we have human Luna. And human Luna thinks like fox, not wolf."

He pulled me up, because feet blue, and carried me inside, but shouted to pack outside —

"Tonight, no sleep! Move bent tree traps to sides! Get fishing nets! Luna will show where!"

Pack howled — not scary howl, but excited howl, because Luna had plan again.

Inside Luna room, he put me on furs, rubbed my feet with his hot hands, and put forehead to my mark.

"You gave fur to Finn," he whispered, "and Finn used it to lie and save pack. Now you give plan to save Finn."

"He is pup who liked pets," I said, tears finally coming, because I was scared for Finn.

"He is double spy who will be triple spy when we pull nets," Kael said, trying to joke, gold eyes soft.

Outside, pack worked in moonlight, moving trees, pulling nets, whispering.

And down mountain, on east path, Finn sat with North wolves, wearing Luna's white fur that smelled like burnt soup, telling them again — "East path safe, Luna in Luna room, I swear" — lying perfect, while his cousin Joren watched, believing.

2 days until full moon.

But North would come tomorrow, with Finn in front, thinking they trapped us.

Not knowing they walked into trap behind trap, set by human Luna who was once traded for 2 goats.

We didn't sleep again.Kael didn't let me help move nets — healer sat by fire and glared every time I stood — but I sat at door of Luna room, wrapped in big brown fur, watching pack work in blue moonlight.Old wolves dragged fishing nets from storage hut. Nets were grey, knotted from river vine, smelling like fish and old water. Holes big enough for hand, but strong — made to catch ice fish that fight.Young boys who dug snow traps yesterday now dug again, but not holes. They dug shallow trenches behind bent pine traps, on east path, where North would run back."Why trenches?" I asked Mara when she came to warm her bloody leg by our fire. Her wolf form had healed leg mostly, but man form still red.Mara smiled, tired. "For Luna's feet. You said river rock is safe but cold. So Alpha digs trench from east path to river rock, covered with branches, so you can crawl without North seeing. Like rabbit hole."Rabbit hole. For Luna.Kael came at midnight, bare chest steaming, snow in tied hai

Finn didn't sleep after.I know because through bond, I didn't sleep either — Kael didn't. His wolf paced all night, even though his body lay still on furs, my head on his chest. At grey morning, before fire was hot, Kael was already outside, tying hair back, claws out, digging. Not mountain path this time. East path.I woke, mark tight, not itchy, and pulled grey dress on, white fur around shoulders. Healer came, checked mark, honey still there, good, closed."Where is Finn?" I asked."With Mara," healer said. "He is scared to see Alpha."I went outside. Snow had started again, soft, thin flakes. Not heavy like before.East path was the small one — only wide enough for 3 wolves, not 50. It went through pine trees, around big rocks, down to lower mountain where North Pack lives.Kael and 10 older wolves were there, not digging holes. They were doing different trap.Beta Mara showed me, whispering."Yesterday snow trap is hole. Today Luna trap is — not hole."She pointed. Older wo

I woke because Kael was not breathing. Not dead — holding breath. Like wolf listening. His bare chest was stiff under my cheek, his arm still around me, but his gold eyes were open in dark, looking at fur-covered door.Outside, wind was too quiet. No snow traps creaking. No wolves snoring in nearby huts. Just quiet that felt wrong."What?" I whispered, hand touching his chest. He put finger to my lips, very gently, so I would not speak. Through bond, I felt it — _quiet, listen, danger close_.He moved slow, pulling furs off me, pulling black pants on without sound. He didn't tie hair. He left it loose, so he could hear better. He pointed to my neck — mark covered in honey paste from healer, not black sap now. "Stay. Hide scent under furs. Don't come."Then he was gone, out the door, bare feet in snow, no sound.I waited, heart loud. Luna room was warm, fire low. I pulled white fur over my head like he said, hiding mark that now smelled like pine and him again — strong after he licked

I didn't stay in Luna room.Next morning, Kael woke before fire was hot, pulling on black pants, tying hair back, gold eyes black with planning."Where are you going?" I asked, sitting up, mark itching less now, more tight, like skin pulling."River," he said. "And mountain path where North Pack must come. We set traps. You stay, healer says no walking much today, mark still soft."But through bond, I felt something else — he didn't want me to stay because mark soft. He wanted me to stay because Elder Corvin was still talking about trading me for cattle, and he didn't want me to hear.I stood, grey dress no longer bloody — Mara washed it at night, left clean one, same grey wool, fur sleeves — and touched his bare arm."I am Luna," I said. "Luna doesn't hide while Alpha sets traps for war that is about her. I come."He looked at my neck — mark red but closed, no blood — and at my feet — pink, not blue after snow — and sighed."Human Luna is stubborn," he muttered, but I felt proud th

  • THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN MATE   COOLING THE PARK

Kael didn't sleep after reading the letter. He sat on edge of Luna bed, bare back to me, black pants, claws out, staring at fire. His bond feeling was like storm — anger, worry, planning, all mixed. I sat behind him, grey dress still bloody on shoulder, hand on his back, feeling scars under skin. "You need to call them tonight," I whispered. "Not tomorrow." He turned, gold eyes tired. "How you know?" "I feel you," I said, touching my itching mark. "You are thinking — call tonight, or Rorik will think we are scared." He nodded. "My Luna feels too much. Wolf females don't feel Alpha thoughts until months. You feel in one day." "Because I am human?" I asked. "Because you are mine," he said. He stood, pulled black shirt on, and opened door. Beta Mara was still outside, with two young wolves — boys, maybe 16, thin, holding spears. "Call pack," Kael said, voice Alpha now, not soft Luna voice. Deep, loud, making floor shake a little. "All wolves, Stoneclaw, to
