“Mom, I’m fine.” The words scrape out of Ivy, barely holding back the pressure behind her eyes.

“Honey.” Her mother’s voice cracks through the phone speaker. “You know we love you. We’ll always support whatever you need, but you don’t have to run—”

“I’m not running.” Ivy’s throat closes around the lie. “I just needed a vacation. Time to clear my head.”

She hears her parents talking over each other at the other end, words tangled and frantic, before her father’s voice finally fills the receiver.

“Alpha Kai, you need to address the council.”Theron walks alongside him, boots scraping against the stone floor, torches mounted on the walls illuminating the hallway. His voice echoes in the corridor, though most of it is muffled by the walls. The others had stayed behind after Kai dismissed the gathering at the town Square; Ivy and Jackson retired to their chambers, while no one saw Frida leave.Kai continues without slowing down or glancing ahead or behind him.“I’ll do it tomorrow.”Theron exhales sharply. “No. Alpha—no. If you don’t—”Kai turns his head, causing Theron to stop mid-sentence. The words he intended to say fade away, and he quickly bows his head, almost awkwardly.“Tomorrow. Of course.”He stays back as Kai keeps moving forward.Theron isn’t wrong; many things feel out of order and require Kai’s attention, especially concerning Ivy. While others may have been deceived, he needs to be honest with those responsible for the pack's safety and growth which is his council

Strings of amber bulbs hang above the square, their light swaying whenever the evening breeze sweeps through. Hundreds of voices merge beneath them, too quiet to discern individual conversations but too loud to be overlooked.Every few moments, Ivy catches whispers of "monster" directed at her. Stranger. Human. The words drift through the crowd."She looks normal.""That’s her?""No… I heard she burned in the fire and walked out of it.""My cousin said she glowed." "Don’t say that too loud."She ignores all of them.Guards move among the rows of people, hands resting on their belts, eyes watchful despite the peaceful atmosphere. Some of their guns are concealed beneath their jackets, tucked away in holsters. The moment Ivy steps into clearer view, conversations don’t stop. They shift, heads turning slowly, one after another.Ivy keeps her hands clasped to hide the slight tremor in her fingers. She can still sense Frida's desire. The heat hasn't left, and she can still see what she'd

Ivy is taken aback, searching her mind for the right response. She isn't sure how much she should reveal since she hasn't spoken to Kai yet.Athena suddenly sneezes loudly and spectacularly ill-timed.Ivy instantly turns around. "Bless you—" She quickly scans the vanity, grabs a folded tissue, and crosses over to press it into Athena's hand. "Here."Athena accepts it, bowing. "Thank you, Luna Ivy." She dabs at her nose. "That's very kind of you."Across the room, Frida's fingers curl and then slowly uncurl before curling again. With visible effort, she flattens both hands against her thighs and forces a wide smile."Athena, darling." Her voice is smooth as silk over a blade. "Would you mind leaving me alone with my sister-in-law for a moment?"Athena's expression shifts slightly. "Lady Frida, she really should—"Frida’s eyes brighten with a pale warning glow that indicates her request is not up for discussion.Athena bows her head, gathers a brush, places it in its tray gently nudgin

Ivy lies on her back, her fingers intertwined over her stomach. A gentle knock at the door pulls her awake. She stretches and yawns before sitting up, causing the blanket that covers her to slide away. Almost instantly, memories flood back. She ponders it all. Her hand drags through her hair. "What am I?" It's no longer about who she is; she's aware of the existence of werewolves, their rules, and everything that comes with it. Yet no one has taken the time to explain this world to her. Not even Councilman Theron, with his tedious lectures, has sat her down to say, "Ivy, here's what you need to know about someone like you." Could it be that they are just as clueless? The knock sounds again. Ivy groans and scrubs both hands over her face. "Coming." She blinks and shakes herself free from these thoughts. Sitting up, she rolls her shoulders and swings her legs off the bed padding to the door in bare feet. She pulls the hem of her oversized t-shirt down over her thighs. The cotton

Kai paces back and forth, back and forth, his boots leaving marks in the ash that coats the floor—residue from blue fire, a manifestation of Ivy's power made visible."Are you telling me," he says, his voice dropping to a dangerously low tone, "that with all the Etas and Lotas I have, along with their commanders—no one can tell me where my mate and my Beta are?"Kai punches the wall. The drywall fractures perfectly around the point of impact, and his knuckles split open, blood trailing from there. He seems oblivious to it."None of this makes sense." He gestures at the destruction surrounding them: the charred grass, the scorched deck, the deep foot print burned into the ground where Ivy had stood as her power erupted. "You’re saying my sister, my Frida, caused all of this?"Councilman Arden and Drew keep a cautious distance, hands clasped behind their backs."Alpha Kai, please," Arden begins. "We need you to stay calm. We’re organizing search parties; we’re—"Kai’s gaze snaps to him,

Frida hears the shouting and hurries to her window, pushing it open. She watches from the second floor, arms crossed, captivated.Ivy jumps, launching herself into the air with Jackson in her arms. The gap between the ground and the roof seems impossible to clear. Yet she does it anyway. From the roof, she uses the line of trees, jumping from tree to tree, using branches to push herself higher and faster. Her body radiates with blue fire, but Jackson's lifeless form remains untouched by the flames.Frida sees Ivy vanish behind the trees. Then she springs into action. She rushes downstairs quickly but calmly. She spots her men strategically positioned before the wine incident in an attack formation. With a single hand signal, she commands them.'Retreat.'They lower their weapons and fade back into the shadows. One of the kitchen staff is starting a car. Frida doesn’t hesitate; she grabs him by the back of his shirt and yanks him from the driver's seat.He doesn't resist. He knows bett
