LUCAS’S POV

The wooden staff cracked against Kane’s, the impact reverberating up my arms. I twisted, driving forward with another strike that forced my Beta back three steps.

Kane blocked, but barely. I could see sweat dripping down his temple as he reset his stance.

I didn’t give him the chance to breathe before I came at him again, the staff whistling through the air. He parried, but my next blow shattered his guard entirely.

Liora’s face flashed bef

LIORA’S POVIt took months to bring the kingdom back to anything resembling order. The disloyal council members who'd sided with Darren faced trial one after another, Harwick and Denton stripped of their titles and exiled beyond Crovania's borders, Coulson sentenced to execution when evidence surfaced tying him directly to funding Darren's stronghold. Guards who'd looked the other way during my imprisonment lost their positions, some facing worse depending on how deep their involvement ran. Lucas didn't soften for anyone, not old friends, not longtime allies, and the palace slowly learned that his patience for betrayal had run completely dry.He grew firmer in every policy that followed, rewriting laws around surrogacy, around the treatment of omegas, around the kind of unchecked cruelty that had let Darren's schemes flourish unnoticed for years. I watched him carry that weight quietly, determined to build something better out of the wreckage his son had left behind. And now, after al

  • THE ALPHA’S QUIET TEMPTATION    CHAPTER 149 - What Remained on the Field

LIORA’S POVI was still trembling against Lucas's chest, still trying to steady my breathing after everything my body had just done, when I caught the flash of movement behind him.Darren, blade in hand, lunging toward Lucas's exposed back."Lucas!" I screamed, but before he could even turn, someone else moved faster.Elora.She threw herself between them without a moment's hesitation, and the dagger meant for Lucas's heart buried itself in hers instead. The battlefield went silent.Lucas spun, catching her as her legs gave out, lowering her gently to the ground while Darren stood frozen a few feet away, staring at what he'd done with an expression I couldn't fully read, something between shock and irritation, like she'd simply gotten in his way rather than saved his father's life."Elora." Lucas's voice cracked, cradling her against him despite everything that had happened between them."I loved him," she whispered, blood already staining her lips, her hand reaching weakly toward whe

LUCAS’S POVValor had made it two miles from the palace before Byron caught him, dragging him back in chains with a grim satisfaction that told me everything I needed to know before either of them said a word. It took hours to break him, hours I resented every single minute of while Liora remained missing somewhere I couldn't reach, but by dawn Valor had given us everything, the location of Darren's stronghold, the number of men he'd gathered, the timeline of his plans.I didn't wait for a better moment. I gathered every loyal soldier I could muster and marched before the sun had fully cleared the horizon. The stronghold came into view by midday, an old fortress abandoned decades ago and clearly refitted in secret over recent months. We surrounded it fast, cutting off every visible exit, and I watched from horseback as the gates finally groaned open and Darren emerged at the head of his own gathered forces."Last chance," I called across the distance separating us. "Stand down. End th

LIORA’S POVThey didn't stop. Darren's men took turns, fists and worse, and I felt my body breaking down piece by piece, but I refused to give them the one thing they actually wanted from me. Every time they demanded I show them the fire, I clenched my hands and gave them nothing, silence wrapped around whatever screaming was happening inside my own skull."Show us," Darren said, crouching in front of me, his voice thin with impatience now, the earlier calculated calm replaced by something more frantic. "Enough of this. Show us what you can do."I lifted my head just enough to meet his eyes, blood dripping from my split lip, and spat directly in his face."I don't have any power," I said, my voice wrecked but steady. "You built a fantasy out of nothing and destroyed everyone's life chasing it. There's nothing here for you."His hand cracked across my face before I finished the sentence, my head snapping sideways with the force of it."Useless," he snarled, wiping my spit from his chee

  • THE ALPHA’S QUIET TEMPTATION    CHAPTER 146 - The Only Person He Loves

LIORA’S POVI sat with my palms pressed together, straining every part of myself toward the fire I knew lived somewhere inside me, but nothing answered the effort. No warmth, no spark, nothing but frustration building tighter with every failed attempt until I wanted to scream at the stone walls surrounding me.The door groaned open before I could try again.Darren stepped inside, and every muscle in my body locked with a hatred so consuming it nearly stole my breath."Little dove," he said, using the name he used to call me back when I still believed it meant something, back when I thought his affection was real. "You look terrible."I said nothing, glaring at him with everything I had left, but he crossed the room anyway, crouching down until we were level, close enough that I could smell the wine still clinging to him."Nothing to say?" he asked, tilting his head. "That's new for you. Usually I can't get you to stop talking.""Don't call me that," I finally spat. "You lost the right

  • THE ALPHA’S QUIET TEMPTATION    CHAPTER 145 - The Pawn and the Poison

LUCAS’S POVThree days. Three days since Darren had vanished from that room, since Liora had run into the forest and never come back, and every hour that passed without word felt like another year carved off my life.I'd sent every available guard, every tracker, every man loyal enough to trust with the search, and still nothing. No trace of her. No sign of him. It was as if the forest had swallowed them both whole, and the not knowing was slowly hollowing me out from the inside.Byron found me in the war room, hunched over maps I'd stopped actually seeing hours ago."Still nothing," he said, not a question."Nothing." I dragged a hand down my face. "How does a man vanish that completely inside his own territory?""Not alone," Byron said grimly. "Several council members are missing too. Harwick, Denton, Coulson. All gone within the same window Darren disappeared."My stomach turned cold. "You think this is coordinated.""I think it's exactly what it looks like," Byron said. "A coup, L
