KAIA VELEN POV

Dawn came too fast and too slow at the same time.

I stood in the warrior's quarters watching the sun bleed across the horizon, and I realized I was shaking. Not from fear. From anticipation. In a few minutes, Damien was going to walk into that courtyard and declare war on the only home he'd ever known. And I was going to stand beside him and watch it burn.

He appeared in the doorway like he'd materialized from shadow itself. He was dressed in full Alpha armor—black leather and silver insignia, the marks of his birthright, the symbols that declared him worthy to lead. His eyes were completely gold.

"They're gathering," he said. "The loyal warriors. Word spread through the compound about the females we freed. People are asking questions."

"Is Rafe awake?" I asked.

"Not yet. But he will be soon. The moment the courtyard fills with warriors, he'll know something's wrong."

I stood and moved toward him, and he pulled me close. His hand came up and gripped the back of my neck, and for a moment, we were just two people standing in a room with the knowledge that everything was about to change.

"I love you," he said. "I need you to know that. If this goes wrong—"

"It won't," I said. "And if it does, I love you too. So we're even."

He kissed me. Quick and hard and full of promise.

Then he turned and walked toward the courtyard.

---

The courtyard was packed.

At least two hundred warriors, maybe more. The loyal ones stood closest to the center, their weapons ready, their eyes hard. Rafe's followers lingered at the edges, confused and uncertain. The elders sat on the stone platform, and I watched them exchange worried looks.

Damien walked to the center of the courtyard, and the crowd parted for him like water.

"Warriors of Blackmoon Pack," he called out, his voice carrying across the entire courtyard. "I am Damien Blackwood, son of the previous Alpha. I have come to challenge for the leadership of this pack."

The courtyard erupted.

Voices shouting. Warriors pushing forward. The elders standing up from their seats. I watched Councilor Chen's face go pale, like he suddenly understood what was happening.

"You can't challenge," one of the elders said. "You were exiled. You have no rights in this pack."

"I have every right," Damien replied, his voice ice. "My bloodline makes me heir. My father's death makes me challenger. And the law gives me the right to demand combat."

"Rafe is the Alpha now," another elder said. "He was chosen—"

"He was never chosen," Damien interrupted. "He poisoned the previous Alpha. He imprisoned seventeen females in an underground facility and drained their power for a dark ritual. He murdered Lyra Morrison and blamed an innocent girl for it."

The courtyard went silent.

"That's a lie," a voice called out from the crowd. Rafe emerged from the compound entrance, and he looked furious. "I have no idea what he's talking about. These are the lies of an exile trying to reclaim power he lost."

"Then come to the training circle," Damien said calmly. "Fight me for the Alpha title. If you're telling the truth, you'll have nothing to fear."

Rafe's expression shifted. I watched him calculate the odds. Watched him realize that refusing the challenge would look like weakness. Watched him decide that he was confident enough to win anyway.

"Fine," he said, stripping off his shirt. "Let's remind this pack what a real Alpha looks like."

---

The training circle was sacred ground.

I'd fought in it a hundred times before, but standing outside it now, watching two men prepare for combat that would determine the fate of the pack, it felt different. It felt like standing at the edge of the world.

Damien and Rafe faced off across the circle, and I realized I was holding my breath.

The fight started without warning.

Rafe attacked first, moving fast—faster than he had before, like the stolen power in that crystal had already started to give him strength. His claws raked down Damien's shoulder, drawing blood.

But Damien was expecting it. He rolled with the strike and came up swinging. His fist connected with Rafe's jaw hard enough that I heard the crack from where I was standing.

They moved like they were dancing—a dance they'd learned years ago as packmates and friends, now twisted into something violent. Every strike Damien threw was precise and controlled. Every one of Rafe's was wild and vicious.

The pack watched in absolute silence.

I saw Damien bleeding. Saw Rafe bleed back. Saw the moment where Damien got Rafe pinned against the ground and I thought it was over. Thought Damien would finish it and we'd move on to rebuilding.

But Rafe shifted at the last second.

His bones cracked and reformed, and suddenly there was a massive wolf where a man had been. Bigger than any normal wolf should be. Darker. The stolen power was making him something else.

He moved faster than I could track.

His jaws closed around Damien's shoulder and shook him like he weighed nothing. Blood sprayed across the training circle, and I felt the bond between us scream.

Damien shifted too, his black wolf even bigger than Rafe's, but he was injured now. I could see it in the way he moved. Could feel it in the panic that flickered through the bond.

Rafe pressed his advantage, and Damien was forced back.

The pack started to shift. I watched the uncertainty ripple through them. Started to see some of them lean toward Rafe. Started to understand that if Damien couldn't win this, everything we'd planned was for nothing.

The females we'd freed would be recaptured and drained until they died. The pack would be enslaved to a monster. And I would have to watch it happen.

The Moonfire in my chest started to burn.

"Don't," a voice whispered in my ear.

I turned to find the older female from the facility standing beside me. She'd stayed behind instead of running like I'd told her to.

"If you use your power, he's lost," she said quietly. "The pack needs to see that he can win without magic. They need to believe that he's worthy on his own merit."

"He's losing," I said, watching Rafe's jaws close around Damien's leg.

"Not yet," she replied.

I turned back to the circle, and I realized she was right. Damien was down, but he was still fighting. Still moving. Still refusing to surrender.

Rafe went in for the kill strike—his jaws aimed at Damien's throat, the finishing move that would end it.

And Damien caught him mid-strike.

His teeth closed around Rafe's front leg and *twisted*. The sound it made wasn't something I'll ever forget. The sound of bone breaking. The sound of a predator realizing he'd miscalculated.

Rafe screamed—an actual scream that came from a place deeper than animal rage. It was the scream of someone who'd just understood that he wasn't invincible.

Damien didn't let go. He kept twisting until Rafe's leg bent at an angle that legs shouldn't bend, and then he released and went for the throat.

This time, Rafe couldn't block it.

Damien's jaws closed around Rafe's neck, and for a second, I thought he was going to finish it. Thought he was going to kill him right there in front of everyone.

But he didn't.

He bit down hard enough to draw blood, hard enough to establish dominance, hard enough to prove the point. Then he released and stepped back.

Rafe shifted back to human form, and he was broken. His left leg wouldn't support his weight. Blood ran down his chest and throat. His eyes had lost that arrogant shine and been replaced with pure, animal terror.

Damien shifted back to human form, and he raised his arms.

"I am Alpha," he declared. "Anyone who disputes this can challenge me next."

The courtyard was silent for a long moment.

Then, slowly, the loyal warriors dropped to one knee. Then the others followed. Not because they were forced to. But because they understood.

This was their true Alpha.

Rafe tried to crawl away, and two warriors grabbed him. He didn't fight. Just lay there bleeding and broken, finally understanding that his game was over.

"Take him to the detention chamber," Damien said, his voice the voice of absolute authority. "He faces trial for his crimes. If he's found guilty—and he will be—he faces execution."

The warriors dragged Rafe away, and I watched him look back at me one final time. His expression was pure hate. Pure rage. Pure recognition that I was the one who'd brought him down.

Then he was gone.

Damien turned to where I was standing, and our eyes met across the courtyard. I watched him remember that I was there. Watched him understand that we'd actually done it.

He started walking toward me, and the pack parted to let him through.

But before he reached me, the female who'd stayed behind stepped forward.

"Alpha," she said, and her voice was strong despite everything she'd endured. "We need to talk about the other females. The ones still imprisoned in the facility. They need healing. They need sanctuary."

Damien looked at her, and I realized this was his first real test as the new Alpha. This was him deciding what kind of leader he was going to be.

"Gather all the healers in the moon temple," he said. "We're going to heal them personally. And then we're going to figure out how to help them rebuild their lives."

The female nodded and disappeared to carry out his orders.

Damien reached me finally, and he pulled me into his arms in front of the entire pack. He kissed me like it didn't matter what anyone thought. Like claiming me publicly was part of reclaiming his Alpha status.

When he pulled back, his eyes were soft again. Almost human.

"We did it," I whispered.

"We're just getting started," he replied.

But for the first time since the rejection ceremony, I believed we might actually survive this.

  • THE ALPHA’S REJECTED BLADE    Growing pains

KAIA VELEN POVThree months after Iris left, we had forty-seven cursed females in the compound. That sounds like a success. And it was. But it was also the beginning of problems we hadn’t anticipated. The training grounds that had been sufficient for seventeen females was now cramped for forty-seven. The quarters we’d prepared were overflowing. The healers were working double shifts trying to tend to all the trauma-related injuries and the ongoing magical strain that came with channeling Moonfire. And food. Nobody had mentioned food being a problem, but suddenly we were going through supplies twice as fast as we had before.“We need to expand,” Senna said at the council meeting, laying out the numbers on the table. “We need more living space. More training grounds. More storage. And we need to do it fast, because more females are coming. Word is spreading. Every cursed female in the region knows they can come here and be safe.”“How many more?” Damien asked.“Hard to say,” Coun

  • THE ALPHA’S REJECTED BLADE    The western challenge

KAIA VELEN POVKess arrived at dawn with twenty warriors instead of forty.Iris’s mission had worked better than we’d hoped. Not only had three warriors defected, but another dozen had refused to participate in what they saw as an act of aggression against a pack that hadn’t wronged them. They’d simply walked away. Which meant Kess was forced to come personally, forced to make this about ideology instead of just numbers. He rode through the gates alone, and the entire pack gathered to watch.Damien stood in the courtyard in full Alpha regalia, and I positioned myself to his right as his Blade. The rest of our cursed females lined the perimeter of the courtyard—a visual statement that we weren’t hiding them. That they were part of us.“I challenge you for leadership of the Blackmoon Pack,” Kess called out, his voice carrying across the courtyard. “I challenge you on the grounds that you are unfit to lead. That you’ve been corrupted by cursed magic. That you’re destroying everythin

  • THE ALPHA’S REJECTED BLADE    The northern alliance

KAIA VELEN POV The delegations started arriving two weeks after the charter was sealed. First came the Northern Territories pack, led by Iris’s father. I watched him arrive with an entourage of warriors, and I realized he looked smaller in person than he had in Iris’s stories. Like fatherhood and exile had worn him down to a smaller version of what he’d once been. Iris met him in the courtyard, and I held my breath watching them embrace. Their reunion was stiff at first—years of exile and misunderstanding between them—but by the end of the first evening, they were talking in low voices like they were trying to rebuild something that had broken. “He wants to formalize an alliance,” Damien told me as we watched from the shadows. “Wants the Northern Territories and Blackmoon to stand together. Wants to present a united front to any other packs that might oppose cursed females.” “Is that a good thing?” I asked. “It’s complicated,” Damien said. “It’s good for us. But it also mea

  • THE ALPHA’S REJECTED BLADE    Claimed

KAIA VELEN POVThe coronation celebration lasted until the sun rose.By the time the last warrior stumbled away, exhausted and drunk on victory, the courtyard was empty except for the scattered remnants of the feast. Damien and I stood together watching the dawn paint the stone walls gold, and I realized we hadn’t been alone together since before the battle.“Come with me,” he said, taking my hand.He led me through the compound, past the quarters and training grounds, to a place I hadn’t known existed. A private chamber carved into the mountainside behind the Alpha’s quarters. It was lit by torches that cast flickering shadows across stone walls, and in the center of the chamber was a pool of water that glowed faintly silver.“It’s the sacred spring,” Damien explained. “Only the Alpha and their chosen mate are supposed to know about it. Only they’re supposed to enter it.”“Why are you showing me?” I asked.“Because I’m claiming you properly,” he said. “Not just marking you. No

  • THE ALPHA’S REJECTED BLADE    The aftermath

KAIA VELEN POVThe ritual chamber felt like a tomb.Iris lay in the center of the circle, her body completely still. Her skin glowed faintly silver, and I could see her heartbeat—slow, steady, but there. The other six females who'd participated in the ritual were unconscious too, but their breathing was even. Their wounds were already starting to heal on their own.Iris was the only one who looked like she'd been drained completely dry."Is she alive?" Damien asked from behind me. His voice sounded strange—rough, pained."Yes," I said. "But I don't know for how long."---The healers worked through the night. They brought salves and old magic and knowledge passed down through generations of werewolves and cursed females. They worked on Iris first—channeling gentle power into her, trying to coax her body back toward consciousness. Then they turned their attention to me.When they removed my shirt, I realized my left side was worse than I thought. The warrior's claws had raked deep—deep

  • THE ALPHA’S REJECTED BLADE    The battle begins

KAIA VELEN POVThe Pure Alliance came at dawn. They didn’t sneak. Didn’t try to ambush. They came across the open field toward our compound in a formation that was meant to intimidate. Eight packs. Warriors dressed in coordinated armor bearing symbols I didn’t recognize. Leaders riding horses at the front like they were coming to a coronation instead of a war.I stood on the compound walls beside Damien, and I could feel him calculating. Assessing. Preparing.“They’re counting on intimidation,” he said quietly. “They think we’ll break just from the sight of them.”“Will we?” I asked.“No,” he said. “Because we have something they don’t. We have a reason to fight that goes beyond territory and pride. We’re fighting for survival. For existence. They’re fighting because they’re afraid.”He raised his hand, and the signal went down the line. Our warriors moved into position. The first clash happened at the compound gates.I watched from the walls as our warriors—a mix of traditio
