MasukALPHA RYKER
The Crescent ball ritual began today, and it was responsible for my bad mood. I stood before the large mirror in my room, covered in sweat and herbs. A white towel hung low around my waist. The combined smell of Marjoram, dill seeds and some other herbs swayed, circling the air around me, its juices dripping from my head down to my toes.
How long was I going to do this shit?
Eileen had said it was compulsory I did the mate finding ritual again this year, but she never said they intended to bathe me in some ‘herbal’ liquid. The burnt herbs and incense I could take, but being drenched in a mixture of herbs in hopes to attract a non-existent mate, was something I couldn't.
“Then give them a Luna. Find your mate.” Caden's voice rang in my head.
I hated the thought of this. Finding a mate when war was right at our doorsteps was nothing but misplaced priorities. I knew what was more important, and it was definitely not a mate.
A rapt knock drew my attention to the door. I turned to it, just in time to see Caden slide in. He took one good look at me, then burst into a loud guffaw
I shot him a glare.
“Not funny” I frowned at him, moving from the mirror.
“Sorry” He chuckled. “When my mother said you were taking a herb bath, I never imagined you'd stink after it” He continued.
“Shut up” I chortled, joining him.
“How long will this one go on for?” He asked, resting on the sofa.
“A day, or two?” I shrugged.
“Hmmm” he nodded. “What is the essence of this new ritual?” He asked again. I stared at him squarely, he raised his left brow quizzically.
“What else?”
“To smell nicer?” He mocked. I gave him a serious look which only made him laugh more.“Seriously though,” he began after laughing. “ I think you should give them what they want.”
“And, how am I supposed to do that?” I asked him. He shot me a look at this. Caden knew I didn't believe in mates or soulmates. Even though he had this crazy philosophy of me having something to do with my lack of a mate. Ironically, he wasn't even mated yet.
“It's not my fault.” I shrugged.
“As if” he scoffed
“ It is not as if a mate is someone you can just pick. A Luna I can get, but a mate is over reaching”
“Lauren?” he queried, a little shocked.
“Have I toiled with the idea? Yes.”
“What?!” He exclaimed incredulously.
“She's not a bad choice,” I shrugged. Caden stared at me as though I had grown an extra head. He was one of the many people who didn't approve of Lauren, her grandfather's position in the pack notwithstanding.
“She's a wrong choice” he countered.
“That's my girlfriend we are talking about”
“I thought this was for the sugar? Why are you taking it seriously?”
“Cause I know her, and trust her. She's got strong ties, her family is good for business.” There were many reasons why Lauren was an ideal choice.
“Of all the gorgeous Crescent moon women of rank, why Aaron's granddaughter?” He asked in dismay.
I shrugged, not that he would understand most of my choices, but Lauren was smart, calculative and tough. Her ruthless side helped her assert dominance in her own way. Honestly, I've never really seen a Crescent She-wolf that could measure up to her.
But that was not the major reason.
“I'd suggest an interpack marriage.” Caden continued. “Howlfang for example. They've got a powerful army. Alpha Guan is filthy rich, and his daughter would make an excellent Luna”
“Eileen told you this?”
“No. I did my research. She's his only heir. You know what that means right?”
“I’m not interested” I pushed myself up, making for the bathroom.
“Mother wants to see us,” Caden said, dropping the issue as quickly as he'd brought it. “ She's downstairs. Something about the ball and final preparations” he said, standing to his feet.
“I'll be down soon” I assured him. He held the door knob, then paused.
“Ryker, I understand you're under a lot of pressure to fulfill duty and take care of your pack, but don't do anything you'd regret. The Pack's Luna will have to be your wife first, before anything” and with that, he was out. Leaving me with the weight of his words and the smell of herbs.

“Why the fuck should I put this in my wallet?” I stared at the bay leaves Eileen had pressed into my palm.
“To attract your mate” she counseled.
Oh boy! Bay leaves too?
She handed me a little bottle of greenish liquid.
“What's this for?” I asked, scrutinizing the bottle.
“Perfume made with Lavender, patchouli, nutmeg and fennel” She replied.
“And why the hell should I wear this?”
“To attract love, and your soulmate”
Caden snickered, I shot him a glare. His mother turned to him “I made a bottle for you too” she said, handing him another bottle, same as the one she'd given me. Caden's smile dropped. It was my turn to laugh. He stared at the bottle suspiciously.
“Book a herb bath for him while you're at it,” I taunted.
“Hahaha, very funny” He rolled his eyes at me.
“I already did” Eileen joined in the banter. I laughed hard as Caden's expression went from disappointment to horror
“Mother!” He called. She handed him the bottle in response.
“In your bath lotions, your oils, and in your cologne. Use the oil twice each day” she instructed him. I laughed at how specific his instructions were. Taking the bottle from her. I handed it to Gwen, the housekeeper, who stood beside her, struggling to hide her smile.
“Alpha, should I put in your lotions and oils?” She asked.
“No”
“Yes”
I and Eileen answered simultaneously. I shot Eileen a glare.
“Yes,” She said to Gwen. Gwen's eyes found mine, a skeptic look on her face. Eileen gave me a challenging look. I sighed, it was just oil right? And it smelled good. I nodded affirmatively to Gwen. She smiled, took a bow and left the room.
“Mother wins again,” Caden muttered underneath his breath.
“I heard that” I said, making for the door.
“Mother knows best” Eileen remarked “Come home for dinner?”
“We will,” Caden responded.
“Ryker?”
“Certainly” I replied to her. “Are you coming with?” I directed to Caden.
“Yes, Alpha,” He mockingly bowed. His mother hit him playfully.
The moment we were outside, I pulled him in, knocking him off his feet. He landed on his back.
“Dude!” He wheezed.
“Work on your reflexes” I stood over him, stretching out my right hand to him. He eyed my hand suspiciously, then finally took it. I pulled him up, tapping on his back. “Now, we are even” I brushed past him, heading for the car that was parked and waiting. I noticed Caden wasn't following behind. He stood still at the spot where I'd left him.
“Cade?”
He didn't reply, just stood still watching me.
What the fuck?
“Cade?” I called again
“Was just thinking what would happen when you step out with that thing in your wallet” He spoke in a serious tone.
“You mean this?” I showed him the bay leaves in my palm.
His eyes twinkled mischievously “Mate?” He mocked, then burst out into taunting laughter at my irritated expression.
“God, I can't wait to see you hooked!” He remarked, heading towards the car. There was no winning with this dude. How he managed to switch from stoic, to playful and then ruthless was beyond me. I shoved the bay leaves into my wallet.
“They don't work” I dismissed.
“Best believe, they do”
We'll see.
ALPHA RYKER When Eileen told me Xaviera had gone to the training gym, the last thing I expected to see was her in active combat, and with none other than Lauren. Lauren was a skilled fighter. Cocky and arrogant, but she fought well. I had feared for Xaviera's safety, and had been a little mad at Caden for allowing her to fight. However, when I saw her fend off all Lauren's attacks like you'd do a noisome insect, I knew she was up to something. She fought like a trained fighter. And that wasn't something she'd done in a few days. Her posture, her demeanor, her defense, the way she observed her opponent, showed a great deal of training. Years of it.Whichever pack she came from definitely had her as a Delta. A delta of noble blood. “Your fax didn't inform us of your arrival,” she spoke first, after the hall had been cleared. “Security measures,” I shrugged, looking at her face for the first time. Somehow, it felt good looking at her pretty face. And the initial burst of anger I fe
BETA CADENXaviera was so fucking stubborn, it infuriated the hell out of me. Challenging Lauren despite her unseeming frame to a duel, showed she wasn't informed, or she'd been blinded by a natural dislike for the woman. Lauren took her position, her stance low and grounded, her focus so acute it could cut. Xaviera, on the other hand, gave off a calm and calculated vibe. Nothing intimidating, but I could see her focused on her opponent. So keen, as though she could see the brain work in obvious patterns. I sighed. “The rules are simple. The first person to bite the dust, loses. No shifting. Keep your claws and fangs away. Hand to hand combat, only!” My eyes sought Xaviera. She evaded my gaze. I just hoped she knew what she was doing. “Begin!”Lauren moved first, almost like a shadow, lurching her fisted hand against Xaviera. Xaviera pivoted in a fast move, dodging the blow that was aimed to her side, her hands shot out against Lauren's neck, but the other woman was fast enough
XAVIERAI had never anticipated the day of the week the way I did today. Eileen had helped me navigate my way throughout the house, the wings, the quarters, the rooms and of course the kitchen. I had met some staff, and memorised some names, but I couldn't wait for what today would bring. Not even Ryker's abrupt fax could dampen my mood. Eileen had received it this morning, and had informed me. I read it, Reuben(I didn't know what was, until Eileen explained), was responding to treatment. He made no mention of me. Again. I didn't expect him to. I shouldn't. After our Elite meeting last night, I wasn't certain of what the future held. I had disgraced my mate's lover before the ladies she would have led, if not for my abrupt appearance in her boyfriend's life. Her boyfriend’s life. The thought of it made my blood boil. Not that I had any claim over him, but I didn't like the thought of them together, or him with any other woman. Eileen had said she was proud of me. She was happy
ALPHA RYKERReuben had made a miraculous recovery. In five days, he was able to stay conscious, and interact coherently. The Black Salutary had drained him of all the poison, and had broken the spells that kept him at death's door. The worst was over, all he had to do was recover, regain lost energy and he would be back to normal. Rose had been ecstatic. She'd jumped into my arms, and cried at the news of his recovery. After we'd gone to see him, she'd never left his side. The Black Salutary had moved her from the main palace to Reuben’s quarters on my request. They had agreed, saying it would aid his recovery if his mate was around. My work here was done. I planned to leave for Crescent Moon tomorrow. I had let my host know, and she'd thrown another feast in my honour. She had equally broached the topic of her proposal of a union, but I hadn't relented to restate my stance on the matter. Yet, her daughter never left my side all through the evening. I retired early, hoping to get
XAVIERAToday was day five. Five days since I moved into the Crescent Villa. And Eileen said it was best I hosted the women of the Crescent court. Women of high ranking, and status, hosted by the new Luna of Crescent moon to fraternise over fine wine and exquisite dining. My mother had hosted things of this nature, and had ensured Zephyr, and I attended. Usually, this was where the deepest secrets and scandals of the pack were tabled, affairs to be resolved, fangs were bared, claws clawed and pride wounded. It was hot red gist every Wednesday night, and Zephyr enjoyed herself more than I did. We called it the Crimson Night, Eileen called it the Elite Court. Potayto—Potahto. Same goal, same function. Fangs would be bared, some pride clawed, and facades cracked. I didn't like drama, but with the amount of drama that had found me, I was here for it. All of it.Throughout the afternoon, I walked beside Eileen as she barked out orders, canceled out dishes, added some and tasted the f
ALPHA RYKER The moon swelled above Black Isle with magic, the air had shifted to a warmer temperature, and the table before me bustled non-stop. Several chandeliers luminanced against polished china, the house staff moved in rapid sync around the table, serving, replacing, filling and refilling. Laughter, banters and humour drifted through the air like perfumed smoke. Rose and my companions seemed quite lost in the magic of things. I, however, settled for observation. I couldn't let my guard down despite how warm everyone was around me. “You've barely touched your food,” Phoebe commented beside me. “Is it not to your liking?” She asked. I stared at the content before me, I cut a piece of the venison, chewing slowly. “It is. My mind is just elsewhere.” “Crescent Moon?” “Home. Yes.”“This is also your home,” she commented. “Your mother, even if you'd rather talk about something else, was the High Leader of the pack before she married your father. You carry her magic, even though
