Chapter 40

LUCIEN'S POV

Her body shook uncontrollably and her lips moved quickly but her eyes remained closed. I looked at Yvonne who offered a little smile. I could see how tired Yvonne was and I felt like I had placed her on a spot with Isla but she wouldn't accept help. She felt like she could handle everything herself.

“It’s normal. She would either wake up or…”

“I am the Luna of Blackridge,” Isla suddenly spoke out of her sleep. I froze and looked at Yvonne. She raised a brow.

“That has never happened.”

“She just spoke, Yvonne,” I stared at Isla. “She just spoke.”

“She said she's the Luna of Blackridge,” Yvonne said like I had not heard it. I didn't want to know what she said. I hated that she said that. That he still had such a strong hold on her. She gasped and her eyes shut open. They were red and a pulse throbbed by the side of her head.

Her eyes flickered with recognition when they looked at me and I was grateful. She was panting like she had just run a race and despite t

  • THE ALPHA’S SILENT BRIDE   CHAPTER 52

Chapter 52LUCIEN'S POV The air was suffocating and too still. It has been five nights since I last spoke to Callen. He stopped coming to the office on the second day and I couldn't deny that I missed him. That I needed someone to talk to but I don't know if I could trust him. What if he leaked vital information again? I was at a crossroad and the heaviness in my chest weighed me down. I grabbed a bottle from my shelf. It was the last one. I made a mental note to get it restocked. That was Callen's job. He knew my favourites and introduced me to more. How was I to survive without him? I poured the whiskey into my glass and took it in one gulp. It burned my chest and I winced. I picked up a cigarette and lit it. I stood by my window watching the village as I blew out the smoke. I put the cigarette out on the window sill and inhaled shakily. The smell of steel and sweat hung heavy in the training grounds. The men stilled as I walked in. I walked past them without saying a word

  • THE ALPHA’S SILENT BRIDE   CHAPTER 51

LUCIEN My subconscious was eating me alive. It was screaming at me to compose myself, to get a grip on my anger. Unfortunately my anger was relentless and at the end of the day, my composure was in shatters and there was literally nothing that I could say. The only thing that I could do, was to continue to swing my fists into Callen's face. Maybe I was being ridiculous to think that Callen would betray me in any way. I know I said my delusion was the only safe space at the moment but what if it was eating me alive. What if it was slowly transforming into paranoia without me knowing it? What if my gut was wrong and it was too late for Callen to forgive me. My rage mixed up with logical reasoning was a messy situation. I could barely register the hands that were pulling me away from Callen's body. The mention of Isla's name in a bad light was enough to throw me into a blind fit of rage regardless of the consequences. Get it together. But it was difficult. Rage darkened every bit of

  • THE ALPHA’S SILENT BRIDE   CHAPTER 50

Chapter 50ISLA'S POV Sayora’s house smelled strongly of burnt sage and herbs. It was the kind of smell that took roots in a place. A smell that made it look like the house was built around it. It was neither pleasant nor foul. I sat in the middle of the bed, my eyes fixed on the lone flame from the candle she lit. Nocturnal sounds surrounded us and I heard a growl from somewhere. I shivered. Sayora adjusted her glasses on her nose and continued humming as she crushed something in a pot. There was something electrifying about the tune she was humming. It made the room warm in a way fire couldn't. I let the quilt slip off my shoulder as her voice washed over me. I could see her watching me from the corner of her eyes. “You have barely said a word today. Is your voice gone? Did my charm fail?”I chuckled and shook my head. “No, I'm good. You haven't said much either.”She raised a brow. “So we're playing the silence game? Fair.” I smiled. I loved being here. With her. Inhaling her h

  • THE ALPHA’S SILENT BRIDE   CHAPTER 49

CHAPTER 49LUCIENI was beyond convinced that things couldn't get worse. It was the only consolation that I clinged on to. But each time that I try to plunge myself into these delusions so I wouldn't lose my kind entirely, something that I didn't expect keeps on happening. It was almost as if the universe was taking every opportunity to throw everything that it could at me and with each thing it threw, a little part of me was breaking. I don't know if I had it in me to keep on taking whatever was thrown my way and as much as I didn't like to think of myself as fragile, there was no accurate word that was enough to describe the state of my mind right now, aside from ‘fragile’. Why the hell did Tarlyn keep having the upper hand over me? What on earth was she doing that I wasn't? My breaths came out in short and heavy puffs. My heart was racing and it was suspended in a state of endless frenzy. I was pacing back and forth. My legs were slightly weak and my muscles were screaming a

Chapter 48LUCIEN'S POV “Lucien, you're here,” Yvonne said trying not to sound surprised. She wiped her hands on her skirt and walked to me. “Hello Yvonne,” I said slowly and she squinted. “Have you been drinking, Lucien?” I took off my glasses and she gasped, taking several steps backwards. I knew my eyes were bloodshot. “My goodness,” She rushed forward and held my face in her palms. “Is everything okay? Talk to me please. When was the last time you slept?”“The night before she left,” I muttered and tears formed a thin film over Yvonne's eyes. “But I’m fine. I just need to find her.” “Shut up,” She sniffed. “You are not fine. Look at you. You would fall sick if you continue like this. Do you think she would be happy seeing you this way?”“I just need her to come home,” My throat burned and I could taste the tears I refused to shed. “She would come home, baby. She will,” Yvonne pulled me in for a hug. “I would give you something to help you sleep.”I walked into the infirmary

  • THE ALPHA’S SILENT BRIDE   CHAPTER 47

Chapter 47TARLYN'S POV Dust clung to my clothes and hair as I rode back to the pack. I could even taste it and see it on my lashes. I was going to need a serious bath. “Where are you coming from?” Callen said as I returned the horse to the stable. I was startled and tried to remain calm. I shut the door and turned to him. “I didn't know you were the new employee here,” I kissed my teeth and turned to walk out but he grabbed me by my arm. I looked down at his hand on mine. “Let me go.” “Not until you tell me where you took that horse too. The last time…”“I took it for a run. Racing.” His eyes thinned. “You know that's a lie.”“Tell me about it,” I yanked my arm away. “Whatever you're planning will come back to bite you.”I rolled my eyes. “Tell that to your little princess.” He chewed on his inner lips and walked out of the stable. I needed to find another way to get around because I knew Callen. He was watching me now and might place orders that don't let me get away with an
