Chapter 6

Doctor Reeves was shaking at the man’s harsh tone. The man happened to be Alexander Draven, the CEO of Draven Global—a man who took no nonsense and kept a low profile.

“I kept semen in search of a good woman who would carry my heir, and now you gave it to a gold digger. How much did she pay you?” he asked.

Doctor Reeves was speechless for a minute, still shivering in fear.

“I don’t believe you could be this unprofessional,” Alexander snapped.

“I’m sorry,” Doctor Reeves stammered. “Don’t worry, she’s not a gold digger, and she didn’t pay me. Another interesting fact is that she can’t conceive.”

Alex sighed in relief.

“But still, I want her information. I need to put my eyes on her.”

Doctor Reeves nodded and showed him her pictures and residential information.

“Hm…” he glared at the name. “Arielle Marlowe. Interesting.”

“I’m sorry, Mr. Alex—”

Mr. Alex gave him a cold stare and walked away.

Doctor Reeves sighed heavily, holding his chest.

OUTSIDE THE HOSPITAL

Delaney and Evander came out to meet Arielle.

“You guys took so long,” she complained.

“Sorry, dear. It wasn’t supposed to be a quick procedure, and Doctor Reeves was being cautious with his work,” Evander said.

“Oh, I see,” Ari replied. She turned to her sister. “How are you feeling?”

Delaney faked a smile. “I’m good, sis. I’m just tired. I need to go home and relax. Dr. Reeves approved it.”

“Okay, baby sis. Let’s go,” Ari said, concerned.

Delaney and Evander glanced at each other and smiled.

They entered their car and drove off.

Alexander stepped out with his guards.

“We need to find this woman. Whether she’s fertile or not, I want to know and be sure—incase my baby grows in her.”

“Alright, boss.”

A car pulled up, and Alexander stepped in with his guards.

Ari called Cynthia while in the car.

“Hello, Cynthia.”

“Hi, Ari.”

“I’m sorry, I won’t be able to come to work today. I’m not feeling too well. Like I told you earlier, I was at the hospital, and the doctor wants me to relax,” Ari lied.

“It’s okay, Ari. You’re relieved. You can resume anytime you feel better.”

“Oh, thanks, Cynthia.”

“It’s okay. Be good.”

“Alright, you too.”

The call ended.

The car halted at Delaney’s apartment. She stepped out and waved goodbye as they drove off.

“I’m so happy she did this for me,” Ari said to Evander as he drove.

“Yeah, I told you she would,” Evander said, holding Ari’s hand and kissing it.

Ari smiled.

Her world was finally making sense. Everything felt peaceful—little did she know that this peace wouldn’t last.

“Dear,” Evander broke the silence, “now that we’re expecting a baby, we need to work extra.”

“Yeah, I thought of it too,” Ari agreed. “I was thinking of applying as a cleaner in a restaurant and telling Cynthia I’ll be working half shifts.”

“Wow… I love you, baby. You’re so smart,” Evander praised.

Ari smiled, not knowing Evander was a man disguised as a devil.

“I don’t want you to worry about baby expenses,” she said. “This is my way of helping you… of making up for not being able to conceive for you.”

Evander smiled. “It’s okay, honey. We’re good now.”

“Tomorrow I’ll go to the restaurant and apply. Their notice says ‘apply in person.’”

Evander was pleased. Ari was too naive to doubt him, and his plans were falling perfectly into place.

“You know what, Ari? I think we should go to a bar and celebrate.”

“That’s a nice idea,” Ari smiled.

Evander turned the wheel, and the car moved in another direction.

They arrived at a fancy bar and sat at a reserved table.

“You reserved a table already?” Ari asked.

“Yes. I wanted to make it special.”

“How were you able to do that at such short notice?”

Evander smiled. “I have my ways.”

“Let’s get drunk tonight,” he said seductively.

“I’m in, baby,” Ari replied softly.

“Waiter!” Evander called. “Bring your most expensive wine.”

They drank and talked about life and their unborn child.

After a few drinks, Ari felt dizzy.

Evander paid and carried her to the car. They arrived home late at night.

“We’re home, baby,” he said.

“Be careful,” Ari smiled in her drunken state.

“I should be telling you that,” she laughed. “Fasten your seat belt. Tonight might be wild.”

Before Evander could respond, Ari kissed him.

He lifted her up, heading straight to their bedroom for a passionate and wild night..

Few Weeks Later

Ari was at a restaurant waiting for her turned to be interviewed..

Her phone rang,.. she picked up hastily to check the caller.

It was her sister , Delaney .

Delaney called Ari.

“Hello, sis.”

“Hi, how are you?”

“I’m okay. I’ve got great news.” Delaney said.

“Really… spit it out then ?” Ari was curious.

“I’m pregnant. The surrogate went smoothly.”

“Oh my God… I’m so happy, this is great”.Ari said.

“Yes it is.”Delaney replied.

“Evander will be so happy to hear.” Ari added.

“There’s a problem Sist.. “ Delaney voice went down.

“ what is,? Tell me..” Ari asked, concerned.

“Ari…” Delaney paused. “I might need some money. My cravings are so high lately.”

“Is that the problem “,Ari asked again.

“Yes”, Delaney replied.

“Oh, that’s fine,” Ari replied quickly. “I’ll send you some. I even got an extra job, so don’t worry—I’ll make sure you eat whatever you crave.”

“Thank you, sis,” Delaney said sweetly. “I promise to keep the baby safe for you.”

“I’m going to be a mother,” Ari whispered happily.

Delaney rolled her eyes.

“I’ll call you back. I’m at an interview for my second job.”

“Okay, take care.”

The call ended.

“Naive bitch,” Delaney muttered, throwing her phone on the bed.

“So they both believe you?” a man’s voice said from the shadows.

“They don’t have a choice,” Delaney replied calmly. “They want a baby, and I want freedom—and money.”

The man smiled. His phone was recording everything.

“Then let them enjoy it… for now.”

He stepped forward slowly, his face still hidden.

Delaney watched him approach, her eyes locked on his.

She smiled.

“Looks like we’re not done yet.”

Ariella stayed outside the lab, grinning. Her phone rang, and she reached for it. It was a bank alert—then another call came in. It was Cynthia. “Hey, girl,” Ariella said in a happy tone. “You’re late again. What’s the excuse this time?” Cynthia asked, worried but calm. Ari sighed. “I’m sorry. I got another appointment at the hospital. I should have told you earlier.” “What’s wrong? I hope you’re okay,” Cynthia asked, concerned. “I’m good,” Ari replied. “You can take today off if you want, since you’re not feeling well. I’ll manage without you,” Cynthia added. “It’s okay, girl. I’m fine. I’m coming to work soon—I just need to wait for my medication,” Ari lied. “Okay, dear,” Cynthia replied with a sigh of relief. “I’ll be there in an hour or less. But I need to know—how did your dinner go?” Ari joked. “Oh yeah, about that… well, like I told you, I got served a hot meal,” Cynthia added nastily. “Oh, girl, I know—and you sound like it was fun,” Ari teased. “I

Ariella was still in shock as she held the phone to her ear. “She agreed????” she asked Evander again. “Yes, she did,” he replied. “How were you able to convince her? Did she ask you for money, or did you promise to get her something? Because I know Delaney so well—she does nothing for free,” Ari asked, still in awe. Evander froze for a while. “No, baby, she didn’t. I just told her how you happen to be her only family and how you cry every night because you want a baby, and she took sympathy and decided to help. I told you she cares about you, and the best part is—she agreed to be our surrogate tomorrow at the hospital.” “No way,” Ari responded in happy but surprised . Evander raised his voice a little. “No way…for what ?” he asked. Ari. He was about to lose his temper. Ari sensed it and stopped asking further questions. “I’m sorry, dear. I just don’t like the idea of you asking too many questions,” Evander apologized. “It’s okay,” Ari responded. “I will need to gi

The door shut closed. Ariella fell onto the couch, still crying furiously. Her only hope of becoming a mother—and saving her marriage—had just been destroyed. She feared Evander would soon return to his cruel, ruthless manner. She waited for him to start yelling at her for being infertile. But the reverse was the case. Evander walked up to her at a slow pace. “Don’t cry, my love. We’ll get through this. At least the doctor gave us an alternative. We just need to get someone to carry our baby—that’s all.” Ariella looked at Evander. This wasn’t what she was expecting. Instead of yelling, he sounded concerned. She spoke softly through teary eyes. “I know but it’s too much for me to bear. This was my only hope of saving my marriage. I don’t want to lose you, Evander. I love you so…” “Shhh,” Evander cut in calmly. “I know, baby. I love you more. And you are not losing me, so stop saying that.” “I’m not?” Ariella asked, her voice trembling. “No, you’re not, my love. Wipe

“You think that’s going to work?” Evander asked Delaney. “Yes, it will. My sister is so dumb. She believes every medical report—especially if it’s from DR. CASSIAN REEVES our family’s most trusted doctor.” “All we need to do is slip him a little cash, and boom—we have him in the palm of our hands.” Evander looked confused, unsure about the plan. “Look,” Delaney said, trying to convince him. “When I was twelve, I followed my dad to the hospital after he lied that he was sick. I thought he was going for a checkup. While I waited outside, he was inside Doctor Reeves’s office. I got tired of waiting and decided to meet him at the door.” Her voice dropped. “I overheard my dad telling Doctor Reeve to get rid of his mistress’s pregnancy. She was coming for antenatal care that day. I saw my dad slip some cash into Doctor Reeves’s hands. He smiled and said, ‘Consider it done.’” “What?” Evander exclaimed. “I never told my mom, and my dad had no idea I knew. He took that secret t

At a Library. Ariella Marlowe. *** Today was hectic. Ariella Marlowe—also known as Ari—rushed to finish her shift as a library assistant . She rearranged books on the shelves, brushing dust from their covers as the quiet hall surrounded her. Her phone rang. Her heart tightened when she saw the caller ID. Evander Hale. Her husband. She hesitated for a moment, already knowing what he was going to say. Still, she forced herself to answer. “Hello, dear,” she said calmly. “Ari,” he replied—no affection, no warmth. “I’m almost through with work,” she added quickly, her tone sharper than usual. “I’ll be heading home soon.” Evander scoffed angrily. “That’s all you know how to do—work, work, work. You can’t even produce a baby. What exactly are you working for? To take care of a family while being unable to start your own?” Ariella stayed silent, listening. She dared not interrupt him—doing so would only start a war. Tears welled in her eyes as she absorbed his wo
