ログインElliot's POV
Aiden told me to go home after work because he was going to dinner with his father alone. I argued that I should come since Richard wanted to meet me but Aiden said it would be better if he talked to his father first. My apartment felt too quiet. I tried to watch TV but could not focus, I tried to read but the words did not make sense. All I could think about was Aiden sitting across from his father getting yelled at because of me. I checked my phone every five minutes even though I knew Aiden would not text during dinner. He was probably sitting in some huge dining room in Richard's mansion eating fancy food while his father lectured him about ruining the family reputation. By eight I gave up pretending I could do anything productive so I just sat on my couch staring at my phone. Nine o'clock came then went, still nothing. At ten I started really worrying. How long could one dinner take? Maybe Richard was making Aiden stay longer to prove some kind of point. Maybe they were fighting, maybe Aiden was in trouble and I was just sitting here doing nothing. I texted him "Are you okay?" then immediately regretted it because what if his phone went off during dinner and made things worse. I stared at my phone waiting for the three dots that meant he was typing back but they never came. Eleven o'clock. My leg would not stop bouncing. I got up then paced around my apartment which was only like ten steps from one wall to the other. My place was tiny compared to what I grew up in but it was mine and I loved it except for right now when it felt like a cage. I thought about calling him but that seemed like a bad idea. If the dinner was going badly a phone call would just make it worse. If the dinner was going well then I would be interrupting. Either way I would look desperate and clingy which was not what Aiden needed right now. Midnight hit and I was lying in bed staring at the ceiling when my phone finally buzzed. I grabbed it so fast I almost dropped it. "We need to talk tomorrow," Aiden's message said. That was it, no explanation or details. Just those five words that made my stomach twist into knots. I typed back "Okay" because what else could I say. He did not respond after that. I could not sleep. I just lay there staring at the dark ceiling thinking about all the terrible things Richard might have said. All the ways this could go wrong. All the reasons Aiden might want to talk which probably meant he was going to fire me or worse tell me we needed to stop whatever was happening between us. My phone lit up again around one in the morning but it was not Aiden. It was another message from an unknown number. "Time is running out. Your father is losing patience." I deleted it without responding because I was tired of getting threatened by everyone. My family, Vivian, Random people who worked for my family. Everyone wanted something from me and I had nothing left to give. The next morning I got to work early because staying in my apartment was driving me crazy. The office was empty except for the cleaning crew. I made coffee then sat at my desk pretending to work while really just watching the elevator doors waiting for Aiden to arrive. He walked in at seven thirty looking exhausted. His suit was perfect like always but his eyes had dark circles under them. He saw me then walked straight to his office without saying anything. A few minutes later he texted "Come in and close the door." I got up on shaky legs then walked to his office. He was standing by the window with his back to me. "How did it go?" I asked after closing the door. "About as well as expected," he said without turning around. "My father wants you fired." My heart sank. "Okay." "I told him no," Aiden said then finally turned to face me. "He did not take it well." "What did he say?" I asked. "He said I was being reckless," Aiden said while walking to his desk. "That the rumors are damaging the company reputation. That you are a distraction I cannot afford." "Maybe he is right," I said quiet. "He is not right," Aiden said firm. "He just wants control like he always does." "So what happens now?" I asked. Aiden sat down in his chair then rubbed his face with both hands. "He threatened to call a board vote of no confidence. If he can convince enough board members that I am unfit to lead they can remove me as CEO." "He would do that to his own son?" I said shocked. "He would do anything to maintain control of this company," Aiden said. "I have known that my whole life but I guess I hoped maybe this time would be different." "I should resign," I said. "Before this gets worse." "No," Aiden said standing up fast. "That is exactly what he wants. He wants to control who I work with and who I spend time with and every decision I make. I am not giving him that power." "But if you lose the company because of me," I started to say. "Then I lose it," Aiden interrupted. "But I am not firing you just because my father demands it. I already told him that." "What did he say?" I asked. Aiden looked away. "He said if I do not get rid of you within a week he will cut me off from all family resources. No more access to the family accounts. No more support from his connections. Nothing." "That is insane," I said. "That is my father," Aiden said. "He thinks money solves everything. That threatening to take it away will make me fall in line like I always have." "But you did not fall in line this time," I said. "No," Aiden said while looking at me. "I did not." We stood there staring at each other. The air felt heavy between us. "Why?" I asked. "Why are you risking everything for me?" He opened his mouth then closed it. Whatever he wanted to say got stuck in his throat. Finally he just shook his head. "Go back to work Elliot," he said. "We will figure this out." I left his office more confused than before. Aiden was willing to lose his family money and possibly his company just to keep me around. That had to mean something but I was too scared to think about what.Elliot's Pov I did not respond because I did not know what else to say. Liam meant well but his kind of help always came with strings attached. He wanted to protect me but he also wanted to control me and I was done being controlled by anyone. The city lights appeared in the distance and I felt a mix of fear and determination. I was going back to the place that fired me and the place where everyone thought I was either a criminal or a victim. I did not know which was worse. "Where exactly do you want to go?" the driver asked as we entered the city. "Drop me at the Blackwood Tech main building," I said. "At this hour?" the driver asked. "It will be closed." "I know," I said. "Just drop me there." The driver shrugged again and drove through the empty streets. At two in the morning the city looked different. Quieter and darker and almost peaceful. A few people walked on the sidewalks and some bars were still open but most places were closed. We pulled up in front of Black
Elliot's Pov I sat on my bed watching the clock on the wall tick past nine and then ten and then eleven. The house was finally getting quiet as everyone went to their rooms. I heard James walk past my door and stop for a second before continuing down the hallway. He was checking to make sure I was still here. I was still here but not for long. At midnight I got up and pulled a small bag out from under my bed. I had packed it earlier with just the basics because I did not need much. A change of clothes and my wallet and my phone charger and the glass paperweight Aiden gave me. I did not know why I packed that last thing but I could not leave it behind. I changed into dark clothes so I would be harder to see and put on my sneakers. Then I sat on the edge of my bed and waited another thirty minutes to make sure everyone was really asleep. The house was silent except for the usual creaking sounds old houses make. I stood up and grabbed my bag and walked to my bedroom door. I opened i
Aiden's Pov I sat in the chair against the wall and tried to make myself invisible. The board meeting room felt too small and too hot and every person in here was staring at me like I did not belong. Maybe I did not belong anymore but Marcus said I should come so I came. Richard sat at the head of the table looking calm and in control like always. The board members filled the other seats and they all had their laptops open and their serious faces on. This was going to be bad and I could feel it. The forensic accountant stood up and started her presentation. She showed spreadsheets and transaction records and talked about offshore accounts. Every word she said made the evidence against Vivian stronger and I should have felt good about that but I just felt tired. Then Vivian walked in and everyone stopped talking. She wore a gray suit and her hair was perfect and her makeup covered the fact that she looked exhausted. She sat down across from Richard and put her briefcase on the tabl
Vivian's Pov I stood in my apartment staring at the folder on my kitchen counter and my hands would not stop shaking. The fake evidence sat inside waiting for me to use it and I had been staring at it for twenty minutes trying to convince myself this was the right thing to do. It was not the right thing and I knew that but I was out of options. My phone rang and I jumped because I had been so focused on the folder. I looked at the screen and saw Richard's name. My stomach twisted but I answered anyway. "Hello," I said and tried to sound confident. "Vivian," Richard said and his voice was cold. "The board meeting starts in one hour. You need to be there." "I know," I said. "I will be there." "Come ready to explain yourself," Richard said. "The forensic accountants have found more evidence and it does not look good for you." "I can explain everything," I said even though I could not. "You better," Richard said. "Because if you cannot then you are finished and I cannot help you
Elliot's PovI sat on my bed staring at the wall and counting the flowers on the wallpaper. There were forty three of them and I had counted them five times already because I had nothing else to do. My room felt smaller than I remembered and the air was too thick and I could not breathe right. It had been two days since James brought me back here and I had barely left this room. I ate meals alone and ignored everyone who tried to talk to me and spent most of my time looking out the window at the gates that kept me trapped.Someone knocked on the door and I did not answer because I knew who it was. The door opened anyway and Liam walked in wearing another perfect suit. He always wore suits even at home like he was ready for a business meeting at any second."Dad wants you at dinner tonight," Liam said and closed the door behind him.I kept staring at the wall. "No.""It was not a question," Liam said."I do not care," I said and finally looked at him. "I do not want to sit at that tabl
Aiden's Pov Maya finished her coffee and stood up. "I have to get to a meeting but I will let you know if I find anything." "Okay," I said. She started to walk away but then stopped and turned back. "Aiden?" "Yeah?" I said. "I am glad you came in today," Maya said. "It means you have not given up yet." I did not know how to respond to that so I just nodded. She smiled and then walked away toward the meeting rooms. I turned back to my laptop and pulled up my email again. The message from Marcus was still open and I read it one more time. Someone had sent new evidence against Vivian overnight and that evidence was helping to clear the investigation. I clicked on the attachments in the email and started looking through them. Financial documents and transaction records and emails that showed Vivian moving money from company accounts to offshore accounts. It was all very detailed and very damning. But something felt off about it. I zoomed in on one of the bank statements and stud
Elliot's POV The office felt different when we walked in. Everyone was whispering and looking at us then looking away fast when we noticed. News about the board vote must have spread already because people kept their heads down when Aiden walked past. I went straight to my desk while Aiden headed
Elliot's POV I caught up to Aiden in his office where he was throwing things into a cardboard box. Files and photos and awards he had earned over the years all getting tossed in without any care. His hands were shaking but his face was stone. "Aiden," I said from the doorway. He didn't look up.
Vivian's POV I walked into Richard Blackwood's office at exactly eleven thirty carrying my leather folder with all the information I needed to destroy his son. His secretary tried to stop me but Richard waved her away and told her to close the door behind her. "You're early," Richard said from be
Aiden's Pov I stood outside Blackwood Tech at seven in the morning and stared up at the building that used to be mine. The sun was just coming up and the glass windows reflected the orange sky and it would have looked beautiful if I did not feel so hollow inside. Security should have stopped me f
