LOGINElliot's POV
Aiden told me to go home after work because he was going to dinner with his father alone. I argued that I should come since Richard wanted to meet me but Aiden said it would be better if he talked to his father first. My apartment felt too quiet. I tried to watch TV but could not focus, I tried to read but the words did not make sense. All I could think about was Aiden sitting across from his father getting yelled at because of me. I checked my phone every five minutes even though I knew Aiden would not text during dinner. He was probably sitting in some huge dining room in Richard's mansion eating fancy food while his father lectured him about ruining the family reputation. By eight I gave up pretending I could do anything productive so I just sat on my couch staring at my phone. Nine o'clock came then went, still nothing. At ten I started really worrying. How long could one dinner take? Maybe Richard was making Aiden stay longer to prove some kind of point. Maybe they were fighting, maybe Aiden was in trouble and I was just sitting here doing nothing. I texted him "Are you okay?" then immediately regretted it because what if his phone went off during dinner and made things worse. I stared at my phone waiting for the three dots that meant he was typing back but they never came. Eleven o'clock. My leg would not stop bouncing. I got up then paced around my apartment which was only like ten steps from one wall to the other. My place was tiny compared to what I grew up in but it was mine and I loved it except for right now when it felt like a cage. I thought about calling him but that seemed like a bad idea. If the dinner was going badly a phone call would just make it worse. If the dinner was going well then I would be interrupting. Either way I would look desperate and clingy which was not what Aiden needed right now. Midnight hit and I was lying in bed staring at the ceiling when my phone finally buzzed. I grabbed it so fast I almost dropped it. "We need to talk tomorrow," Aiden's message said. That was it, no explanation or details. Just those five words that made my stomach twist into knots. I typed back "Okay" because what else could I say. He did not respond after that. I could not sleep. I just lay there staring at the dark ceiling thinking about all the terrible things Richard might have said. All the ways this could go wrong. All the reasons Aiden might want to talk which probably meant he was going to fire me or worse tell me we needed to stop whatever was happening between us. My phone lit up again around one in the morning but it was not Aiden. It was another message from an unknown number. "Time is running out. Your father is losing patience." I deleted it without responding because I was tired of getting threatened by everyone. My family, Vivian, Random people who worked for my family. Everyone wanted something from me and I had nothing left to give. The next morning I got to work early because staying in my apartment was driving me crazy. The office was empty except for the cleaning crew. I made coffee then sat at my desk pretending to work while really just watching the elevator doors waiting for Aiden to arrive. He walked in at seven thirty looking exhausted. His suit was perfect like always but his eyes had dark circles under them. He saw me then walked straight to his office without saying anything. A few minutes later he texted "Come in and close the door." I got up on shaky legs then walked to his office. He was standing by the window with his back to me. "How did it go?" I asked after closing the door. "About as well as expected," he said without turning around. "My father wants you fired." My heart sank. "Okay." "I told him no," Aiden said then finally turned to face me. "He did not take it well." "What did he say?" I asked. "He said I was being reckless," Aiden said while walking to his desk. "That the rumors are damaging the company reputation. That you are a distraction I cannot afford." "Maybe he is right," I said quiet. "He is not right," Aiden said firm. "He just wants control like he always does." "So what happens now?" I asked. Aiden sat down in his chair then rubbed his face with both hands. "He threatened to call a board vote of no confidence. If he can convince enough board members that I am unfit to lead they can remove me as CEO." "He would do that to his own son?" I said shocked. "He would do anything to maintain control of this company," Aiden said. "I have known that my whole life but I guess I hoped maybe this time would be different." "I should resign," I said. "Before this gets worse." "No," Aiden said standing up fast. "That is exactly what he wants. He wants to control who I work with and who I spend time with and every decision I make. I am not giving him that power." "But if you lose the company because of me," I started to say. "Then I lose it," Aiden interrupted. "But I am not firing you just because my father demands it. I already told him that." "What did he say?" I asked. Aiden looked away. "He said if I do not get rid of you within a week he will cut me off from all family resources. No more access to the family accounts. No more support from his connections. Nothing." "That is insane," I said. "That is my father," Aiden said. "He thinks money solves everything. That threatening to take it away will make me fall in line like I always have." "But you did not fall in line this time," I said. "No," Aiden said while looking at me. "I did not." We stood there staring at each other. The air felt heavy between us. "Why?" I asked. "Why are you risking everything for me?" He opened his mouth then closed it. Whatever he wanted to say got stuck in his throat. Finally he just shook his head. "Go back to work Elliot," he said. "We will figure this out." I left his office more confused than before. Aiden was willing to lose his family money and possibly his company just to keep me around. That had to mean something but I was too scared to think about what.Elliot's Pov We left the restaurant around ten and walked down the street with no real destination. The city was busy with people going out and cars honking and the usual noise but it felt quiet between us. Aiden walked close enough that our arms brushed sometimes and every time we touched I felt sparks. The wine had relaxed me and the conversation at dinner had opened something inside me that I had been trying to keep closed. "Thank you for dinner," I said. "Thank you for coming." "I almost said no." "I know. I am glad you did not." We walked for blocks and talked about nothing important. Movies we wanted to see and books we had read and places we wanted to travel. Easy conversation that felt natural and right. Then it started to rain and at first it was just a few drops but within seconds it was pouring. People around us ran for cover and Aiden grabbed my hand. "My apartment is two blocks away," he shouted over the rain. "Let us go." We ran through the streets
Aiden's Pov I could not stop thinking about what happened in the elevator. The way Elliot looked at me and the way he said he could not tell me to move back because he did not want me to. That had to mean something and that had to mean he still wanted this as much as I did. I spent all evening thinking about it and by the time I went to bed I had made a decision. I was going to take a risk and I was going to ask Elliot to dinner. The next morning I got to the office early and practiced what I would say. I must have written and deleted ten different versions of the same email before I finally just walked to his office. Elliot was at his desk reading through contracts. He looked up when I knocked and I could see surprise in his eyes. "Do you have a minute?" "Yeah. Come in." I walked in and closed the door behind me. My heart was beating so fast I thought he could probably hear it. "What is it?" Elliot asked. "I wanted to ask you something." "Okay." "Would you hav
Elliot's Pov I dreamed about Aiden that night and in the dream we were back in his office working late like we used to. But this time when I handed him papers our fingers touched and instead of pulling away he pulled me closer. He kissed me hard and pushed me against the desk and I wrapped my arms around his neck. His hands were everywhere and I could not breathe and I did not want to breathe because this felt too good to stop. "I never stopped wanting you," he said against my lips. "Then do not stop now." He kissed me deeper and I felt his hands slide under my shirt and his touch was fire on my skin. I wanted more and I wanted everything and I wanted him. I woke up hot and gasping and my heart was racing. The sheets were tangled around my legs and I was covered in sweat. I looked at the clock and it was only five in the morning. I lay there staring at the ceiling and trying to calm down. It was just a dream but it felt so real. I could still feel his hands on me and his lips o
Aiden's Pov The crisis got worse the next morning when I walked into the office and saw Elliot pacing in his office on the phone. His face was tight and his voice was sharp and I knew something bad had happened. I waited outside until he hung up and then knocked on his door. "What is wrong?" "Anderson Corp wants to pull their contract." "What? Why?" "They heard about the embezzlement investigation and they are worried about working with us." Anderson Corp was our biggest client and they brought in almost twenty percent of our annual revenue. Losing them would be a disaster. "When did they call?" "Ten minutes ago. They want a meeting this afternoon to discuss terminating the contract." "Can we stop them?" "I do not know. But we have to try." Elliot ran his hand through his hair and I could see panic in his eyes. This was his first real crisis as CEO and if he lost Anderson Corp the board would blame him. "We can fix this," I said. "How?" "We make a plan. We show them that
Elliot's Pov I was packing up my things to go home when I saw the box sitting on the shelf in my office. It was the same box I brought with me when James took me back to the family house and the same box I brought when I came back to the city. I had not opened it since I became CEO because I did not want to think about that time. But now I was curious so I pulled it down and set it on my desk. Inside were the things from my old desk. The coffee mug Maya gave me and some pens and notebooks and the glass paperweight Aiden gave me after I finished a big project. I picked up the paperweight and held it up to the light. It made rainbows on the wall just like it did in my childhood bedroom and just like it did in my old apartment. Under the paperweight was a piece of paper folded in half. I did not remember putting it in the box but I picked it up and unfolded it. It was a note in Aiden's handwriting. "Good job on the quarterly report. Your analysis was excellent. Keep up the good wor
Aiden's Pov I did not sleep at all that night. I lay in bed staring at the ceiling and thinking about Elliot. The way he looked when he said working with me was killing him and the way his voice cracked when he said he was trying to forgive me. I kept replaying our conversation over and over in my head. Every word and every look and every moment when we stood too close and wanted things we could not have. At five in the morning I gave up on sleep and got out of bed. I showered and got dressed and left my apartment while it was still dark outside. The city was quiet and empty and I walked to the nearest coffee shop that was open. I ordered my usual black coffee and then I thought about Elliot. He always got a vanilla latte with extra foam. I remembered because I used to watch him drink it every morning when he was my assistant. Before I could stop myself I ordered a vanilla latte with extra foam. The barista gave me a weird look because I was holding two cups but she did no
Elliot's PovI sat on my bed staring at the wall and counting the flowers on the wallpaper. There were forty three of them and I had counted them five times already because I had nothing else to do. My room felt smaller than I remembered and the air was too thick and I could not breathe right. It h
Elliot's POV I caught up to Aiden in his office where he was throwing things into a cardboard box. Files and photos and awards he had earned over the years all getting tossed in without any care. His hands were shaking but his face was stone. "Aiden," I said from the doorway. He didn't look up.
Vivian's POV I walked into Richard Blackwood's office at exactly eleven thirty carrying my leather folder with all the information I needed to destroy his son. His secretary tried to stop me but Richard waved her away and told her to close the door behind her. "You're early," Richard said from be
Elliot's POV The office felt different when we walked in. Everyone was whispering and looking at us then looking away fast when we noticed. News about the board vote must have spread already because people kept their heads down when Aiden walked past. I went straight to my desk while Aiden headed
