LOGINElliot's POV
The next day at work felt weird. Aiden barely looked at me all morning, when he did his face was blank like nothing happened last night. I tried to focus on my work but all I could think about was how close we were to kissing before the call ruined. By afternoon I had given up pretending I could concentrate. I kept messing up simple tasks and had to redo reports twice because I typed the wrong numbers. Aiden did not say anything about it but I could tell he noticed. Around six everyone started leaving for the day. The office emptied out until it was just me and Aiden left on our floor. I should have gone home too but something kept me at my desk pretending to work on a spreadsheet that did not actually need fixing. "Elliot," Aiden said from his office doorway. I looked up to see him standing there with his sleeves rolled up and his tie loose. "Come here." I got up then walked to his office on legs that felt shaky. He closed the door behind me which made the room feel smaller somehow. "We need to finish going over these contracts," he said while gesturing to a pile of papers on his desk. "It might take a few hours." "Okay," I said even though we both knew the contracts could wait until tomorrow. This was an excuse to be alone together and we both knew it. We sat at his desk going through papers for the next hour. Every time our hands touched passing documents I felt that same electric feeling from last night. Aiden's jaw kept getting tight like he was fighting to stay focused. "This section needs to be rewritten," he said while pointing at a paragraph. I leaned closer to read it and suddenly we were inches apart again just like last night. "Yeah," I said quietly. "I can fix that tomorrow." "Good," he said but did not move away. Neither did I. The office was so quiet I could hear the clock ticking on the wall. Outside the windows the city lights were coming on as the sky got dark. We were completely alone up here. "Elliot," Aiden said while turning to face me. "About last night." "We do not have to talk about it," I said fast because I was scared of what he might say. "Yes we do," he said. "Because I cannot stop thinking about it." My heart started racing. "Me neither." "This is complicated," he said while running his hand through his hair. "There are so many reasons why we should not do this." "I know," I said. "My father, the board, your job. The rumors," he listed off. "Any one of those things should be enough to stop this." "But?" I asked because there had to be a but. "But I do not care," he said while looking at me with those intense eyes. "I should care. I have spent my whole life being careful and controlled. But with you I do not want to be careful anymore." He reached out then touched my face just like he did last night. His hand was warm and gentle. I leaned into his touch without thinking. "Tell me you feel this too," he said. "Tell me I am not going crazy." "You are not crazy," I whispered. "I feel it." His thumb brushed across my cheek. We were so close I could count his eyelashes, my eyes started to close as he leaned in. This was really happening. After weeks of tension and almost moments we were finally going to kiss. I could feel his breath on my lips. Then his phone rang. "Ignore it," I said but he was already pulling away to check who was calling. "It is the head of security," he said while frowning at his screen. "I have to take this." He answered the phone. "What is it?" I watched his face go hard as he listened to whoever was talking. "When did this happen?" he asked. "I will be there in twenty minutes." He hung up then looked at me with frustration written all over his face. "There is a security breach at the data center. I have to go deal with it right now." "Is it serious?" I asked. "Someone tried to hack into our servers," he said while grabbing his jacket. "They did not get in but we need to figure out who it was and make sure all our systems are secure." "Okay," I said while trying not to show how disappointed I felt. We were so close to finally crossing that line. Aiden walked to the door then stopped with his hand on the handle. He turned back to look at me. "This is not over," he said quiet but firm. "You and me. Whatever this is. It is not over." "Okay," I said again because my brain could not form better words. He stared at me for another long moment like he was memorizing my face. Then he opened the door and left. I stood there in his empty office feeling frustrated and confused and wanting him so badly it hurt. My lips were tingling from the almost kiss. My face was warm where he touched it. I grabbed my stuff then left the office. The subway ride home felt longer than usual. When I finally got to my apartment I collapsed on my couch and stared at the ceiling. My phone buzzed with a text from Aiden. "The security breach was Vivian. She tried to access confidential files about the board vote. We have proof." I sat up fast then typed back "What are you going to do?" "Fire her tomorrow," he replied. "She has gone too far this time." Another text came through. "I meant what I said. This is not over. We will finish what we started." I read his message three times before responding "I know." I put my phone down then touched my face where his hand had been. Everything was falling apart around us. The board vote was in a few days. Vivian was actively trying to sabotage Aiden. My family was closing in. And we still had not even kissed yet. But Aiden said this was not over which meant he was not giving up on whatever was happening between us. That had to mean something. That had to be worth fighting for. My phone buzzed again but this time it was from an unknown number. I opened it feeling my stomach drop. "Vivian is not your only problem. Your past is catching up." I deleted the message but my hands were shaking. Someone knew something. Someone was watching. And time was running out before everything exploded.Aiden's Pov I sat in the chair against the wall and tried to make myself invisible. The board meeting room felt too small and too hot and every person in here was staring at me like I did not belong. Maybe I did not belong anymore but Marcus said I should come so I came. Richard sat at the head of the table looking calm and in control like always. The board members filled the other seats and they all had their laptops open and their serious faces on. This was going to be bad and I could feel it. The forensic accountant stood up and started her presentation. She showed spreadsheets and transaction records and talked about offshore accounts. Every word she said made the evidence against Vivian stronger and I should have felt good about that but I just felt tired. Then Vivian walked in and everyone stopped talking. She wore a gray suit and her hair was perfect and her makeup covered the fact that she looked exhausted. She sat down across from Richard and put her briefcase on the tabl
Vivian's Pov I stood in my apartment staring at the folder on my kitchen counter and my hands would not stop shaking. The fake evidence sat inside waiting for me to use it and I had been staring at it for twenty minutes trying to convince myself this was the right thing to do. It was not the right thing and I knew that but I was out of options. My phone rang and I jumped because I had been so focused on the folder. I looked at the screen and saw Richard's name. My stomach twisted but I answered anyway. "Hello," I said and tried to sound confident. "Vivian," Richard said and his voice was cold. "The board meeting starts in one hour. You need to be there." "I know," I said. "I will be there." "Come ready to explain yourself," Richard said. "The forensic accountants have found more evidence and it does not look good for you." "I can explain everything," I said even though I could not. "You better," Richard said. "Because if you cannot then you are finished and I cannot help you
Elliot's PovI sat on my bed staring at the wall and counting the flowers on the wallpaper. There were forty three of them and I had counted them five times already because I had nothing else to do. My room felt smaller than I remembered and the air was too thick and I could not breathe right. It had been two days since James brought me back here and I had barely left this room. I ate meals alone and ignored everyone who tried to talk to me and spent most of my time looking out the window at the gates that kept me trapped.Someone knocked on the door and I did not answer because I knew who it was. The door opened anyway and Liam walked in wearing another perfect suit. He always wore suits even at home like he was ready for a business meeting at any second."Dad wants you at dinner tonight," Liam said and closed the door behind him.I kept staring at the wall. "No.""It was not a question," Liam said."I do not care," I said and finally looked at him. "I do not want to sit at that tabl
Aiden's Pov Maya finished her coffee and stood up. "I have to get to a meeting but I will let you know if I find anything." "Okay," I said. She started to walk away but then stopped and turned back. "Aiden?" "Yeah?" I said. "I am glad you came in today," Maya said. "It means you have not given up yet." I did not know how to respond to that so I just nodded. She smiled and then walked away toward the meeting rooms. I turned back to my laptop and pulled up my email again. The message from Marcus was still open and I read it one more time. Someone had sent new evidence against Vivian overnight and that evidence was helping to clear the investigation. I clicked on the attachments in the email and started looking through them. Financial documents and transaction records and emails that showed Vivian moving money from company accounts to offshore accounts. It was all very detailed and very damning. But something felt off about it. I zoomed in on one of the bank statements and stud
Aiden's Pov I stood outside Blackwood Tech at seven in the morning and stared up at the building that used to be mine. The sun was just coming up and the glass windows reflected the orange sky and it would have looked beautiful if I did not feel so hollow inside. Security should have stopped me from coming in but when I walked through the doors the guard just nodded. My name was still on the access list because nobody had bothered to remove it yet. That hurt more than it should have because it meant I was still technically part of the company but only as a ghost. I took the elevator up to the executive floor and when the doors opened everything looked the same but felt different. A few early employees were already at their desks and they all stared at me when I walked past. Some of them looked away quickly and others whispered to each other and I knew they were all talking about me. The disgraced CEO who lost everything. I walked toward my old office but stopped when I got close.
Vivian's Pov I got to the café thirty minutes early because I wanted to see who this person was before they saw me. I sat in my car across the street and watched people go in and out and tried to figure out which one sent me that text. My hands shook a little when I gripped the steering wheel and I hated that I was nervous. I had not slept at all last night thinking about the embezzlement investigation and how fast it was moving. The forensic accountants were finding everything and it was only a matter of time before they connected all the dots back to me. I needed help and this mystery person said they could give it to me. At exactly eight o'clock I got out of my car and walked across the street. I wore sunglasses even though the sun was barely up because my eyes were red and tired and I did not want anyone to see that I had been crying. The café was small and quiet with only a few people inside. I looked around and saw a man in a dark suit sitting at a corner table in the back.
Elliot's POV My father stepped forward with that proud look he always got when he was about to show off his power and influence. He looked at Aiden then at the crowd of employees and board members who had gathered to watch. "Let me properly introduce myself," my father said in his business voice.
Elliot's POV I was at my desk trying to recreate financial reports from memory when I heard shouting from the lobby. Everyone on the floor stopped working and looked toward the elevators. My stomach dropped because I recognized that voice. It was Liam, my brother. I stood up fast then walked towa
Elliot's POV One hour until the board meeting and Aiden's office felt too quiet. Everyone else had cleared out giving him space to prepare but he asked me to stay. I sat on the couch watching him go through his notes for the hundredth time while my stomach twisted into knots. I needed to tell hi
Elliot's POV I made it halfway down the hall when I heard shouting from the lobby. My father's voice carried through the entire floor and everyone stopped working to listen. "I am here to see my son," James Hayes said loud enough for the whole building to hear. "Elliot James Hayes. I know he work
