LOGINELENA'S POV
7 YEARS LATER Seven years already. How has life been for me? Better, I guess... I now have a family, businesses around the globe. Let me just say I've gotten almost everything I wanted in life, except my payback visit to my past. The door burst open, and footstep rushed in. "Ma'am." I turned. "Information reaching me right now is that Ethan Marcus and Emma Armstrong have finally fixed a date for their wedding," Cleo, my secretary, announced. On hearing that, a smile crept onto my lips as my finger circled the rim of my wine glass. Isn't it funny? I was just thinking about them, and they appeared. "They want to get married?" I asked to be sure I heard correctly. "Yes, ma'am." She pushed her tablet toward me. Really, they want to get married after all they did to me? "Why don't we pay them a visit?" "What do you think?" I laughed a little more. "Your wish is always my command," she replied with a little bow. "Mom..." "Mom..." Jade and Jaden's little voices exploded in excitement the moment they stepped into the mansion. You wouldn't blame them. I've been away for two weeks on a quick business trip. "My babies." My knees slowly went to the floor as they rushed into my arms. But Jade's face wasn't as bright as it should be. "What happened, baby?" I questioned as I moved my hands around her curved face. They hesitated like they didn't want me to know, but after persuading them, they finally opened up. "Someone insulted us in school today... He called us fatherless children," Jaden said. My fists clenched at that very moment. "How dare that child!" My voice vibrated. "Cleo, call for that child's expulsion letter right now..." Jade's little hands slowly curled around mine. "Mom, this is why I didn't want to tell you earlier... Don't expel him... He was just stating the fact," she whispered. I frowned and bent completely to her level. "You don't have to hesitate... I own that school, and I can..." "No, Mom! How many students will you expel because they say the truth? My sister and I will be seven in two months, and yet we don't know our..." He paused. "Mom," he called out softly, tugging at the tip of my dress. "We want to know our father," he whispered. My heart dropped. I had prepared myself for many things... their first day at school, their first cry, even the day they would ask why they had no father. But I had never prepared myself for actually answering who their father was. How do I tell them their father is Ethan? The same man who pushed me down the stairs for what I didn't do? No, I can't let them know. "Look, my babies..." I swallowed hard. "Your dad..." I shook my head and looked away from them. "Your dad is dead. He died even before you guys were born," I said, while trying to fight back the tears that were threatening to fall. "I'm sorry for lying to you guys, my babies. I just can't tell you who your father is." I whispered beneath my breath. then turn my gaze back to them. "Mom, I'm sorry... for keeping this away from you." The tears I was holding finally flowed down. Their eyes melted on seeing my tears. "Mom, we are sorry for making you cry," they chorused, bringing their little hands to wipe my tears. "No, you guys deserve to know." I chuckled and cuddled them into my arms. "Already giving Mom a hard time?" We heard the voice that had become my comfort from behind. "Grandma!" Jade and Jaden shouted and ran into Mrs. Adams' arms. I heaved a sigh of relief. Staring at my world in front of me gave me a warm feeling that sent my soul flying to heaven, even while I'm still on earth. "What have I said about disturbing Mom?" she asked and playfully held their ears. I laughed slightly. "Come with me." She dragged them away but not without winking at me. "Thanks, Mom," I whispered after her. "Ahem." Cleo cleared her throat, bringing me back to our previous conversation. "Hmm, set a meeting with Emma Armstrong as soon as possible... You know what I mean, right?" I muttered. She bowed and walked out. I picked up my drink as I walked to my study room. On the wall hung pictures of Emma Armstrong, Ethan Marcus, and Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong, and beneath each picture was the fate I'd prepared for them. First... Emma. Let's see how you would react to my little visit. Minutes later, my phone buzzed. It was a message from my secretary. "Emma Armstrong has agreed to the meeting." A dark but satisfying smile spread across my lips. "Put me on call when you get there," I typed back. She won't know what's going to hit her. She wants a wedding, right? Then she should be ready to receive her gifts. "And as for you, Ethan..." My fingertips traced the edge of his picture. "Hold on a little longer." I'm coming for you!ELENA'S POVThe atmosphere stiffened around me."No, I'm seeing this wrong... It can't be him!" I muttered, trying to convince myself that it wasn't him. But the moment he walked toward me, my breath froze.Well-defined cheekbones, broad chest, dark curly hair...It's him!I took a step back. My pulse hammered in my throat as questions crashed into each other."Ma'am, are you all right?" the hostess asked after noticing my hesitation and restlessness.I turned, my eyes burning. My mistake was coming here alone. I should have allowed Cleo to tag along. At least she knew what to do at times like this... unlike this stupid question.I slowly looked away from her and returned my gaze to the center of attention."Welcome, Mrs. Adams E. We formally welcome you to LA," his voice boomed as he gave a slight bow.My heart skipped a beat.My legs shook for no reason. I staggered backward, and before I could blink, my foot slipped.I found myself falling down the stairs toward the ground."Mrs. A
ETHAN'S POVThe morning sun rays from the glass hit my eyes, causing me to jolt awake. My eyes opened slightly. No matter how hard I tried, they didn't open fully. I slowly reached out for my phone and used it as my mirror. My breath froze when I saw how swollen my eyes were... but I wouldn't blame them. I slept with tears in my eyes and liquor on my hands.I pushed my phone out and slowly gazed at the floor. My head spun the moment I saw the countless numbers of liquor bottles on the floor. Never in my lifetime had I drunk this much."One, two, three, four, five, fifteen..." I lost count and instantly gave up. I slowly reached for the newly opened one. I didn't bother reaching for a glass before pouring its contents into my mouth. My jaw tightened at the slap it came with... Is it just the wine's slap or the sting that's piercing my heart?Elena is gone. Why's she still after me? Maybe it's payback, considering the fact that I didn't treat her with kindness while she was here... but
"And the shares?" I spun around, my hands mid-air with my glass slightly raised."They remain yours," Cleo replied with a proud smile.Mrs. Adams stared, with a hint of confusion and something like admiration in her eyes.I needed no one to tell me that her head would probably be filled with questions already.Just as expected, she voiced it out."What's happening?" she asked with genuine confusion and curiosity."Well, this is what I meant by killing two birds with one stone." I giggled, but her eyes still held confusion.I released a deep sigh, that one you draw when someone refuses to get your point. Slowly, her wrinkled eyes grew bigger and bigger, as if she was recollecting data and reconnecting them together."You're a badass! You paid her a billion for the shares in her possession, and she was fined a billion dollars for violating the marriage law. The money was paid to your account, and in the end, you now own the shares and the money!?" She rapped through her breath.I nodded
EMMA'S POVMy hands shook against my mouth. My legs gave way the moment I heard those words."Emma Armstrong, you are hereby ordered to pay a billion dollars in compensation for the damages caused by your actions. Failure to do so may result in a prison sentence."The next second, everything went blank. I found myself falling into darkness, and the last words I heard were the exclamation, "Someone has fainted!"By the time I opened my eyelids again, I was no longer in the midst of the crowd. Instead, I was seated inside a car.I tilted my head sideways and looked up, only to find Mom staring intensely outside the window. On the other side was Dad, looking somehow exhausted. My gaze slowly went down to my dress. I was still in my wedding dress, with my flowers still intact in my hands. Was it a dream?"Mom..." My voice came out low, so low that I could barely hear myself."I had a crazy dream that my wedding with Ethan got interrupted by Avon, the marriage law prosecutor... He said I w
Emma's composure shattered like glass against a hard floor the moment she heard the question."Wh... wh... what do you mean?" she quivered, her once perfect voice now lowered like a muffled baby's voice."You said she's dead, right?" Avon questioned firmly. She gave a curt nod like someone trying to deny an allegation after being caught red-handed."She died while trying to escape with Ethan's money. Everyone knows," she let out a dry and nervous laugh."Lies!" One of the reporters stepped forward with his mic stretched toward Emma's mouth. "We know nothing about it. She was only declared dead without us seeing her corpse.""Yes," another stepped forward."How did you know she died?"Another emerged."How did you know she wanted to escape with Mr. Ethan's money?"In less than a blink of an eye, reporters cornered her, throwing questions at her.Tiny beads of sweat formed on her forehead as she stared from one face to another. When Cleo suggested I pay reporters to instigate the plan,
A sharp gasp erupted from the hall.Heads snapped. Eyes widened as they stared in the direction where the voice came from."Pam, pam, ram." My voice blew the entering trumpet because it really needed to."This wedding cannot take place," the voice stated again, but this time it came with the face that held it.Cameras turned.Eyes wrinkled into frowns the moment they faced the person behind the voice as he stepped forward into the hall fully.Murmurs began."Isn't that Prosecutor Avon, the highest law...?""What is he doing here?""Could it be that this marriage is against the law?"The camera left Avon and landed on Emma's face. Her face was all flushed out with something like fear and confusion.Without anyone telling me what's on her mind, I already knew she must be asking, "What's happening?"A smug smile appeared at the corner of my lips.Five years. It took me five good years to come up with this plan.Let's see how it goes.Avon walked slowly to the almost newlyweds, each step
