BETTY

I shift in my seat, heat flooding my cheeks, embarrassment prickling under my skin, and I glance at Grace, praying she’s not paying attention.

Luckily, she’s busy playing with the ribbon on her dress, humming softly to herself, blissfully unaware of the tension wrapping the room like a storm cloud waiting to break.

Before Nathaniel can say something even more humiliating, I reach across and touch Harriette’s hand gently. “It’s okay, Harriette,” I whisper, my voice low, meant only for her.

But she pulls her hand away and slams her palm against the table, the sound like a crack of thunder.

Water trembles in every glass, spilling over the rims and this gets Grace’s attention.

“That’s it,” Harriette snaps, her voice sharp, shaking with rage. “I cannot take any more of this, Nathaniel. You’re behaving like a child.” Her words cut through the air like glass shattering.

Grace’s wide eyes flick from her to me, uncertain, scared, and I dart a glance at Anders, who is already moving, calm

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S FORGOTTEN WIFE: My Husband's Redemption   CHAPTER 022

BETTYI stare at the black gown draped over my body, and I nod. It’s simple and elegant. The kind of dress that whispers rather than shouts.I chose it because I don’t want to stand out tonight, mainly because Rhys seems to command every room he walks into.My stomach twists with nerves, but underneath it all, there’s something else, something sharper — excitement. And not because I’m going with him, though that thought makes my pulse skip, but because this was my choice. No one forced me into it.I sit on the edge of the bed and slip my feet into black strappy heels, fastening the thin straps around my ankles.I run a hand through my hair one last time, and the curls loosen around my shoulders, the soft waves brushing my collarbone. As for my makeup, it's barely there — just a sweep of nude on my lips and a faint shimmer on my eyelids. It looks effortless, and looks like me.I grab my clutch from my bed and just as I reach for the doorknob, the door swings open, and Ruth, one of the

BETTYThe chandelier above the dining table glows with a soft golden light, catching the edge of the silverware and throwing small, fractured sparks across the tablecloth. We are all seated, everyone except Nathaniel.Harriette sits at the head of the table, her back straight, her chin slightly lifted, that quiet authority of hers filling every inch of the room.Grace is next to me, her curls bouncing as she laughs at whatever story Rhys is whispering across the table. He’s in his element, one arm resting lazily on the chair, weaving some ridiculous tale about getting chased by a rooster. Gace giggles so hard she snorts, which makes him laugh too, that deep, rich sound that feels almost out of place in this heavy house. At the far end, Eleanor sits with her glass of chardonnay, her expression distant, the way it always is when she’s in the room with the rest of us.Harriette clears her throat, her eyes drifting between Eleanor and me. “Where is Nathaniel? Didn’t he get my message to j

NATHANIEL.I drum my fingers on the table, each tap louder, sharper, and more deliberate. The air in the boardroom feels heavy, and the soft hum of air conditioner does nothing to cut through the tension crawling under my skin.Across from me, Rhys sits like he owns the room—leaned back, one arm draped over the back of the chair, the other lazily spinning a pen between his fingers. His sleeves are rolled up, collar undone, posture careless. He looks like he’s waiting for his drink at a beach bar and not a billion-dollar land deal that could define the future of Blackwell Enterprises. My jaw tightens, the muscle on my temple ticking. “Are you sure you confirmed the meeting?”He looks up, unbothered, and the faintest smirk tugs at his mouth before he answers, “Of course I did, Nathaniel.” The way he says it, smooth, dismissive, rakes against my nerves. Then he unlocks his phone and glances at it, before placing it face down on the table, as if that’s the end of the conversation. My pati

BETTY“Nothing!” The word slips out faster than I intend. “She was just telling me about a date she had the other day.” I glare at Lucy and silently beg her to play along. She tilts her head, a teasing spark in her eyes, and nods before turning to Rhys. “Yeah.”I mouth I’m sorry, and she gives me a small smile before pushing her chair back. “I’ll go check on the food,” she says, rising gracefully and disappearing toward the kitchen. When I look up, Rhys’s eyes are on me, skeptical and unreadable. He rests his elbows casually on the table, and I can tell he didn’t buy a single word of that.“That phone call looked intense,” I rush to fill the silence before he can.He leans back, a low hum vibrating in his throat. “Yeah, it was. Harriette asked me to help Nathaniel with something, and he’s acting like a child about it.”“Typical,” I cough through the word, and he hears the bitterness in my voice, but surprisingly, he doesn’t pry.“Yeah. Harriette really screwed me with this one.” His h
