Mag-log inSCARLET
I woke up the next morning feeling odd. Not bad or dejected as I had been last night. But odd in a way that I knew things were changing.
With a sigh, I got out of the bed and quickly freshened up, getting ready for the day.
As soon as I left the room, the first place my eyes wandered to was the master’s bedroom. Julian’s room.
I’d known this marriage was a sham along but I didn’t think we’d stay in separate rooms. Of course, this was only expected. Since it was all a ploy.
“Maybe I should make breakfast…” I mumbled to myself.
It hadn’t been up to two days but this was the best I had ever lived in my life. No shared space with my step-mother and step-sister who never hesitated to make me feel like I was a waste of space.
Nothing of that sort.
I was left to my own devices here. With a small sigh, I made my way to the kitchen, only to find the maid there already working on breakfast. Her eyes lit up as soon as she saw me.
“Good day, my lady.” She bowed a little.
I returned the smile. “Hello there. Mind if I help out?”
The blood in her face instantly drained. She tried to shake her head and refuse but I was already washing my hands before she could say anything else.
Despite her protests, I worked with her in getting the breakfast ready. By the time we were rounding up, the sound of footsteps echoed from Julian’s room.
He was already awake.
The maid was already laying out the food when he finally made his appearance.
His face looked…oddly perfect for someone that just got out of bed. And his bed head was nonexistent. Looking at him now, it was hard to deny how attractive he was.
His masculinity oozed out enough sexiness that made it near hard to resist him.
“What’s going on?”
The illusion in my head shattered at the irritated sound of his voice. The maid looked scared for her life, her body already trembling.
I quickly chipped in. “Oh, I—I just decided to help out with breakfast.”
His gaze lingered over the food spread on the table. When his eyes finally turned back to me, the irritation was undeniable.
“That’s not your job, and it certainly shouldn’t be any of your concern.”
Everything else I was going to say died in my throat. I slowly nodded, a piercing pain hitting my chest repeatedly. It wasn’t like I had expected any kindness from him, but his words still stung nonetheless.
His gaze turned to the maid. “Give us a moment.”
She nodded her head, and disappeared into one of the rooms. As soon as she was out of earshot, Julian focused on me once again.
“I’ve decided on what we’re going to do.”
I blinked. “About what?”
“My mother.” He paused, eyeing me carefully. “And your family of course.”
Right…
It was always about that at the end of the day. Nothing else mattered.
“I know what my mother wants, and that’s absolute power. In due time, she’ll make this marriage out to be a scandal. The backlash will be heavy, and I will get voted out of my own company as a result of that.”
My frown came unbidden. It was hard to wrap my head around why a mother could hate her own son as much as she did.
His face was emotionless as it always was, making it harder to even understand how he was truly feeling about it.
“We’ve already decided on this alliance. What we’re going to start with, is make her think she’s winning.”
I folded my arms, letting his words sink in. “And then what?”
“We destroy her plans together.” He answers simply. “That’s all that would follow.”
It was hard not to fix him with a hard look. It sounded plausible, but once again, I really didn’t see how it would benefit me.
“And my step-sister?”
Julian leaned his weight on one of the chairs. “We’ll make sure both she and her mother are caught in the backlash. None of them gets spared.”
His eyes remained stuck on me, and for the first time that day, I felt uncomfortable. He always had that effect with him.
And it wasn’t just because he was so beautiful.
His gaze alone could instantly unearth you wherever you stood. No wonder he could be so intimidating without muttering so much as a word.
“Any objections?”
I paused, the words stirring in my throat. His eyes remained expectant, almost impatient, as he watched me.
“Yes,” I started. “The money for my father’s treatment.”
Seconds of silence passed between us. Then he let out an unexpected laugh. It was dry, devoid of any humor whatsoever.
When he finally stopped, the amusement in his eyes were gone. Replaced by something else I couldn’t quite explain.
“You’ll get your money. I know that’s all there is to you.”
I nodded, ignoring the searing sting of his words. That was one thing that would always remain. The harshness with which he said how he truly felt about things.
The sound of his ringtone cut through the thick tension in the room. He turned away from me to answer it.
“Yeah, come in.”
I stared eagerly as he turned back to me.
Who could the other person on the line be?
Just as soon as those words had passed the mine, there was a knock on the door.
Wordlessly, Julian made his way there. There was a bit of an exchange between him and the person. It sounded like a man…
“Over here.”
I froze when the visitor entered. He had a tall frame, nearly reaching Julian’s height. Dirty blonde hair and enough confidence to feel a room. That, and he had a briefcase with him.
“This is Cameron,” Julian gestured at the man. “My best friend and lawyer. I had him forge a formal agreement for the alliance. To avoid any…discrepancies moving forward.”
A weight tightened around my chest.
Right…
This was in both our interests. It was better to be safe than sorry. Cameron held out a hand which I warmly accepted.
“Please go through this, and make it clear that you understand all the stipulations of this agreement.”
He handed me a fine print document, and then placed a pen beside it. I took my seat, pushing aside the plate of breakfast I was no longer hungry for.
My eyes read through each line of the document for anything I would have otherwise missed. It took a while but I eventually finished up with the whole thing.
One year. That was how long we had to keep up this alliance. I would play the part of a perfect wife, and he would make sure all my finances were handled.
In return, my loyalty and unending obedience was his.
It sounded like the worst mistake I could make. But I was tired. Tired of all the hurt and betrayal I had faced by the two people I had sacrificed so much for. Tired of being used as a pawn by a woman I had never even wrong.
If this was the only way I could gain retribution…
I reached for the pen and drew out my signature. The ink was dried and the agreement finalized.
“Good job.”
Julian’s eyes finally glinted, and once again, I was reminded of why people had referred to him as a monster.
I was starting to wonder if I had made the right decision.
SCARLET Chloe led me down a side hallway away from the main building that was lined with different doors. She pushed open one of them and switched on the light, setting down the garment bag across one of the room chairs.“This should work. There's a mirror, good lighting, and most importantly, no one will bother you in here.”I set my phone down on the table by the mirror and started unbuttoning the ruined dress. Chloe checked her watch and winced. “I actually have to run. I promised the stylist I'd help her with something. Are you good from here on out?”“I'm good. Go.”“Call if you need anything.”She grabbed her bag off the chair, and on her way past the table, she picked up her phone off the table and slid it into her pocket without breaking her stride. She was halfway through the door when she turned back. “I’ll try to come back after if the event’s not over.” She called back, and then she was gone.I hung the new dress on the rack and moved over to the mirror. I sat in front
SCARLET“The press conference is tomorrow.”The warmth in my chest curdled instantly. “What press conference?” I asked, dropping my hand to my side.“Victoria proposed it the night of the signing,” he said calmly. “It was set forty-eight hours ago.”I did the math without meaning to. My mind flashed back to the dinner and everything that came after it.“That's tomorrow.”“Yes.”Of course. Of course that was what mattered. Everything made sense now– the way his face looked at the clinic, the fear he had carried with him into the room, and the way he held my hand through the ambulance ride all the way to the private hospital. Of course all of it had a deadline sitting behind it the whole time. Of course all of it tied back to the merger he couldn't afford to lose.I'd almost let myself forget for one foolish, unguarded minute that everything between us existed because of a contract that had an expiration date. He was just a man protecting an asset, nothing more, nothing less.“So what
SCARLETFor a second I couldn’t speak. Julian stood in the doorway, rain still running off his coat onto the floorboard. His eyes were wild in a way I had never seen before; they were filled with something deeper than fury. Something that looked like it was entirely out of his control.“Why would you do something so stupid, Scarlet?” His voice cracked on my name. He crossed the room in three long strides and stopped in front of my chair, close enough that I had to tilt my head back to continue holding his gaze, close enough that I could smell the rain on him.“We had a deal,” he said. “Partners. If something happened, you tell me. You don’t just vanish into the dark and leave me chasing shadows for days on end, not even knowing if you’re alive or not.”Everything I had been trying to hold together for the last twenty hours broke at once. “I had no choice!” The words tore out of me harshly, my voice coming out louder than I meant it to. “Margaret called me from my father’s hospital
SCARLETEverything that followed the call was blurry. All random, disjointed pieces that I couldn’t properly assemble in my head. The dread in my stomach had since morphed into a hollow void as the minutes slowly ticked by. My own voice sounded distant as I changed my father’s name over and over like a desperate mantra that might keep him alive. “Please, Dad. Just hold on.”Then a van pulled into the hospital parking lot. Six of Julian’s medical staff moved into the hospital room, and within seconds they took complete control of the situation. “We’re moving now!” The lead transport medic shouted over the roar of the rain.I ran alongside the stretcher as they wheeled him out into the vehicle. The rain smacked against my face, but I barely felt it. The only thing I cared about was my father’s limp body on the stretcher. Julian’s hand suddenly found mine right before we climbed into the ambulance. He squeezed softly, reassuring me of his presence. He didn’t let go of my hand the who
JULIANThe elevator doors opened onto the garage, and Vivian was already there. She positioned herself right by my car, her arms crossed, like someone who thought she had the upper hand.“You’ve been ignoring my calls.” She pushed off the hood of the car as I approached. “That’s rude, Julian, even for you.”“Move away from my car.”“I heard the press conference is tomorrow morning. The one with Victoria Vance.” She said it so smoothly, like she was reminding me of a dinner reservation, not an ultimatum that had my place in the company hanging by a thread. “Have you come to your senses yet?”“Get out of my way, Vivian.” The only thing her words did was remind me of how much I needed to find Scarlet. Her eyes flicked to my injured hand, and she reached for it, but I pulled back. “Don’t you dare touch me.”She rolled her eyes. “You need a wife standing next to you tomorrow. Everyone knows.” She tilted her head, studying me, satisfaction evident across her features. “I’m right here. I’ve
JULIANI hadn’t slept. It had been six hours since Scarlet vanished, and I hadn’t had even the tiniest wink of sleep. And now instead of a location from the intelligence team, I had a boardroom full of my father’s old allies and my mother, all watching and waiting to see me break. The conference room on the top floor was already full when I walked in, a dozen faces instantly turning towards me. On the left side, some representatives from Victoria’s company were seated, and on the right were the already existing board members.Eleanor sat at the far end in flawless white, her hands folded, like she hadn’t spent months trying to tear me apart in front of this very board. She looked up at me as I entered the room, her face holding a venomous smile that seemed to hold a promise of what was to come. Danger.“Julian,” she said softly, like she was some kind of doting mother when in reality she was a fucking snake. “Thank you for coming in on such short notice.”I’d had about enough of her
JULIANThe look in her eyes should have seemed pitiful to anyone. And yet all I felt the longer I stared was disgust.Pure disgust that made me want to rub my skin raw. I pushed her away, ignoring the whimper that left her.Her head fell, eyes bouncing as she put together the pieces of the puzzle. S
SCARLETI rarely ever had dreams. But that night, I had a very strange one. It was my father. He was fine this time, smiling and even waving at me.When I tried to reach him, I couldn’t move. I cried and tried to call out to him multiple times but he didn’t move.“Please…please don’t leave me.”He s
SCARLET’S POVThe entire ride back to Manhattan was awkward but thankfully, rain started halfway through the drive, so I didn't need to say anything. I sat beside Julian with my hands folded tightly in my lap trying not to replay Eleanor’s final words over and over in my head.“Men like Julian Cro
SCARLET“Ding, ding, ding,” The ringtone was alarming but I paid no attention to it since the call wasn't coming from my phone. I was heading to the dining area to be served breakfast but the mobile's ringtone kept picking my attention. “Ding, ding,” it didn't stop and by impulse I went back up th
