Chloe Quinn
I wasn’t expecting any comment on my dress, everyone in the house looked elegant and one thing about rich people they make it look casual. My dress was a drop dead gorgeous dress but when I entered the house, it became like the rest. Jake’s mother came close to me, observing me like a queen staring on an object, I felt her sharp eyes on every part she landed them on. “You’re even gorgeous up close.” She said softly and elegantly “And what a rock? I never knew that Jake had this amazing taste.” She said looking at the ring on my finger. “Im always extra when it comes to my heart,” he said patting my back gently. I smiled. “How come Jake has never mentioned about you before?” She asked almost suspiciously. “Well, we thought that privacy would have been very important for our relationship, you know how the press can be.” “Absolutely, privacy that’s something our family values deeply.” “Exactly.” Jake said. “You remind me of your father so much.” Said his mother getting a bit emotional. “I’ll take that as a compliment.” Said Jake laughing. I nodded, my lips curved , I felt anxious and a little bit overwhelmed. I reminded myself to calm down, it was just thirty bloody days and only me knew how much the money I was going to get was my savior. I had to play well the role I was chosen for. Then came cousins, uncles and the grandmother in pearls, who said I reminded her of an old friend of two decades ago, funny. Jake made quick introductions, his hand not leaving me, his voice steady, he was protecting me , or maybe himself. We sat on a long glass dinning table, framed by white orchids every move felt watched every bite or sip felt like an audition. “And Chloe, what is that you do?” Asked Jake’s mother, Evelyn Wolfe. “I__” “She is in hospitality.” Said Jake before I responded. “Hospitality? Like in the hotel?” She raised an eyebrows. “I’d say more like that, I have always been passionate about helping people and making them feel safe.” Jake grinned without looking at me, he sipped his wine and held my hand, squeezing it gently. “I like your hair.” Said Jake’s sister. She had been staring at me for a while now, unapologetically, she couldn’t take her eyes off me. “Thank you.” I said beaming. “ And your family?” Asked Evelyn Wolfe sipping wine. “I thought we could discuss this later,” “Alright.” “Why not now?” Asked Jake’s elder brother,David Wolfe. “She is not going anywhere.” “ I think he’s right, we’re delighted to get to meet you darling.” Said Evelyn, nibbling a broccoli. After dinner, the family members started to leave one by one. I had to stay, it was already late. When everyone left, it was just me and Jake in the house. My heart pounded, I had not been with him alone, especially at his palace, I’ll call that a palace. “We did great tonight,”he said unwrapping his tie “Im glad,” I said sitting on the couch. “Since no one found anything suspicious, I think you’re a good actress.” “I tried my best.” I said “You didn’t try my darling, you were surviving.” He said almost bitterly. “I think now I can go home.” “Im afraid you can’t.” He said looking at me with his sharp eyes. He looked very handsome especially when he became less friendly. “Why not?”I asked. “From, now on you will be staying here, I don’t want anyone to track where you live or come from, you know everyone saw your face tonight, we have to be careful.” “Why is it a problem if they find out where I am from?” “Well, you saw my mother, and my whole family, iwould be lying if I say that they like humble backgrounds. And this must be our secret just like we said in the contract.” “Where should I stay? Sounds like it’s about changing my whole identity.” “That’s what it is, you will be staying here.” “Alright. But what If I want to see my sister?” “You’re cosplaying a fiancée mu darling not a prisoner, you can see her but I will need to know every move you will be making to be able to protect you.” “Fair enough.” “Chloe, you’d belong here so easily.” “Let’s not pretend that I belong here, we know that I don’t.” I said meeting his gaze. “You are not pretending Chloe, you’re surviving.” “What happens if I thirty days are over?” I asked. He reached out and touched my check his hand warm and strong. He stepped closer enough for me to feel his breath. “It depends on you. I could’ve pulled away but I didn’t , it wasn’t bad. I wanted to stay where I was, for the first time in à very long time. “Alright, I will show you where to sleep.” He said heading upstairs. I followed him. I loved the stairs. The staircase unlike anything I have ever seen. It curved like a ribbon, wide and tall with steps made of white stones that sparkled under the light. I ran my fingers along the railing as I climbed. “Can I ?” He asked offering me a hand. His hand was strong and sure. I felt like a princess with her prince climbing the stairs. Entered a very beautiful room. He opened the door to a stunning bedroom draped in soft neutrals and elegant textures. “This is where you will be sleeping.” He said “ It’s beautiful,” “If you need something to wear, I already bought something you might need.” “ How do you know my size?” “ Extra small?” He teased. “Small.” I corrected with a smile. “Either way, if something doesn’t fit, we will change it tomorrow.” “Sure, thank you.” “Good night,” he said closing the door behind him. “Good night.” I took off my stilettos my feet were hurting so bad, It was a relief to stand on the plush carpet. I took off my dress, untied my hair and went to the bathroom. For the first time in the night I exhaled.Jake The office was too quiet. The only sound was the soft hum of the city far below, like a distant heartbeat. I sat behind my desk, sleeves rolled up and my tie hanging loose, staring at a pile of contracts I didn’t really need to read. I wasn’t thinking about numbers or deals or mergers. My mind was somewhere else.It was on her. Chloe.I forced myself to look back at the papers. No. Not now. Not ever. She was just a contract. An agreement. A temporary fix for a problem I had created. She didn’t belong in my thoughts when I had an empire to run, enemies to watch, and a family legacy to protect. But I couldn’t stop picturing her anyway.I saw her in my head the way she had been at the gala wearing that elegant dress, looking fragile but somehow stronger than anyone in the room. She had smiled for everyone even when I knew she was scared. And those eyes… the fire in them when she pushed back against me. She wasn’t supposed to matter. She was supposed to stay on the edges of my worl
The late afternoon streets of the city buzzed with life. Cars honked in impatient bursts. Office workers hurried toward subways or stopped to grab takeout. The sun dipped low behind tall glass towers, streaking the sky with gold and crimson, as if the whole city were burning at its edges.I told Rosa I needed some fresh air. That was partly true. Really, I had to escape the Wolfe mansion the house that felt like it was pressing in on me from all sides. Its expensive walls, its spotless halls, its silent corners they weren’t comforting anymore. They felt like traps.I kept walking, farther than usual, weaving through crowded sidewalks. But even among strangers, freedom felt fragile. Every sound behind me a cough, a footstep, a rustle made me glance over my shoulder. Twice, I caught the edge of a shadow disappearing before I could focus. My chest tightened. Maybe it was nothing. Maybe it wasn’t.When my nerves started to fray, I spotted a café wedged between two boutiques. Its windows g
When we went back to the Wolfe family house. I kept thinking that it was a good idea to wander around, instead of sitting next to them. Jake wasn’t home yet, you can imagine. I went to their library which was big and classy. I loved the interior design and the smell of the books. The Wolfe family library was the kind of room that could swallow you whole. The shelves stretched from the floor all the way to the ceiling, carved from dark mahogany wood that gleamed under the soft lights. Ladders on shiny rails stood against the walls so someone could reach the highest shelves. The air smelled like leather, dust, and a faint hint of smoke, the kind of smell that reminded you these books had lived through decades. It wasn’t a cozy place. It was a room for power for secrets. A place where memories were locked away behind gold embossed covers. I wasn’t supposed to be there. Jake hadn’t said I couldn’t enter, but the library felt private, sacred, like a part of him I wasn’t invited to tou
The morning after the gala, the penthouse felt too quiet like the world had stopped moving. No clinking of breakfast plates came from the kitchen. No sound of Jake’s deep voice filling the hallway. Even his phone, which always seemed to buzz without pause, was silent. The air felt heavy, like the calm before a storm.I padded barefoot across the cool marble floors, my robe wrapped tight around me. The memories of last night still clung to me: the glittering chandeliers, the sharp edge of David’s words, the way Jake had looked at me on the balcony before shutting me out again. In the kitchen, Rosa was already at work. A vase of lilies stood in the center of the marble island, their white petals bright against the gray morning light. She looked up when I entered and offered her usual soft smile the kind of smile that always felt like a warm blanket.“Good morning, Miss Chloe,” she said gently, her accent making the words musical.“Morning,” I mumbled, forcing my lips into a weak smile.
The gala ended in a blur of glitter, champagne, and fake smiles. But David’s words clung to me long after the music faded. Quinn. Ask Jake. They echoed in my head like smoke I couldn’t clear away. Even as we left the ballroom, even as cameras stopped flashing, even as Jake’s hand slipped from mine once we were inside his sleek black car the words followed me.The ride home was silent. Jake scrolled through his phone with the same cold focus he always carried, while I stared out the tinted window. The city lights blurred into golden streaks, but my thoughts stayed sharp, circling the same fear over and over.I wanted to ask. I wanted to turn, demand the truth about what David had said. But something inside me hesitated. Asking might shatter the fragile, careful thread tying Jake and me together. When we reached the penthouse, Jake stepped out first. He didn’t wait for me. Inside, he shrugged off his jacket, loosened his tie, and walked straight into his study without a single word.I
The remembering week was held annually. It was like a gala. And gala was not just a party it was the event of the year. For weeks, the city’s society pages whispered about it, speculating on the guest list, the fashion, the deals that would be struck in corners of the glittering ballroom. Invitations were rare, almost sacred. Politicians, foreign leaders, and the richest of the rich fought for a chance to attend pretending they care about Arthur Wolfe and what he did , but they didn’t. It was an excuse for them to show off and network for their businesses. Everyone loved it,except me.For me, it was another test. Another stage where I had to play the part of Chloe Mackenzie, Jake Wolfe’s perfect fiancée. Rosa had prepared everything for me hours before. The gown she laid out shimmered like midnight sky, a deep-blue silk that clung to me as if it had been sewn onto my body. The neckline dipped low, daring yet elegant, transforming me from a waitress into someone who belonged in Jake’s
