Three days of silence stretch between Michael and me, broken only by the constant buzzing of my phone—reporters seeking comments on the "Walton Heir Bombshell" story. I've instructed Tina to deflect all calls while I focus on damage control with the twins.

"Mom, why are there people with cameras outside?" Alex asks at breakfast, peering through the kitchen blinds. His cereal sits forgotten, soggy flakes floating in milk.

"They're just being nosy," I say, gently pulling him away from the window. "Remember what we talked about? Some people are very interested in your father's family."

Austin stabs at his pancakes. "Is that why Dad didn't take us to the museum? Because of those people?"

The question pierces my heart. I've spent three days carefully avoiding mentioning Michael, unsure how to explain Elizabeth's legal threats without vilifying their grandmother before they've had a chance to form their own opinions.

"It's complicated, sweetie." I smooth Austin's unruly hair, so like Michae

I hesitated, glancing at Alex. His expression was unreadable, but I caught the slight tightening around his eyes."Go ahead," he said, his voice perfectly level. "I'll be right here."The dance floor was already crowded, couples swaying to the orchestra's rendition of something classic and romantic. Austin pulled me into his arms, and I let myself relax for the first time all evening. Dancing with him felt... easy. Natural. "You're tense," he murmured, his breath warm against my ear."I wonder why," I said, but there was no bite to it.He chuckled, the sound rumbling through his chest. "Fair enough. I'm sorry about the auction thing. That was... childish.""It was.""He brings out the worst in me sometimes." Austin spun me gently, and when I came back to him, his expression was serious. "When it comes to you, I mean."My heart did something complicated in my chest. "Austin...""I know. I know we said we'd keep things professional. But Isabella, I—""May I cut in?"Alex's voice was po

FEW DATS LATER~Isabella POV~The charity gala was supposed to be my moment to prove I could handle this. All of this. The press, the society games, the way people looked at me like I was some fascinating specimen under glass. But standing in front of my hotel room mirror, trying to zip up the back of my black evening gown, my hands wouldn't stop shaking."You're being ridiculous," I whispered to my reflection. The woman staring back at me looked composed enough. Hair swept up in an elegant chignon, makeup perfectly applied by the stylist Tessa had insisted on sending over. But my eyes gave me away. They looked hunted. My phone buzzed on the dresser. Two texts, arriving within seconds of each other.*Alex: Car will be there in ten. You look stunning.**Austin: Ready to make them all jealous tonight? Can't wait to see you.*I stared at the messages, my stomach twisting. How did Alex know how I looked? Then I remembered the flowers that had arrived an hour ago. White orchids with a note

~ Isabella POV ~"You must be Isabella."The voice comes from behind me as I'm adjusting the lighting on the Rothko piece, and I nearly drop the tablet I'm holding. I spin around to find a man I don't recognize standing in the gallery doorway, hands shoved deep in his jeans pockets, wearing a rumpled button-down that looks like it's been through airport security one too many times."I'm sorry, but the gallery's closed for the evening." I set the tablet down carefully, my heart still hammering from the surprise. "If you're interested in scheduling a private viewing...""Actually, I'm here with Austin." He steps into the gallery proper, and I notice the way he moves, confident but not aggressive. There's something familiar about his face like I have seen him before "Ethan Ward. Austin's mentioned me, probably."Recognition clicks into place. "The tech entrepreneur. Austin talks about you all the time." I smooth down my skirt, suddenly aware that I've been here for twelve hours and proba

~ Ethan POV ~The black Mercedes pulls up to the curb at JFK, and I spot Austin immediately through the passenger window. Even from here, I can see the tension in his shoulders, the way he's gripping the steering wheel like it's the only thing keeping him anchored to reality.Three years since I've seen him in person, but we've talked enough over video calls that I know something's wrong. Really wrong. Austin Walton doesn't ask his college roommate to drop everything and fly to New York unless the world's ending.I slide into the passenger seat, tossing my duffel bag in the back. "Well, you look like hell.""Good to see you too, Ethan." Austin's smile doesn't reach his eyes. He's wearing a perfectly pressed button-down and dark jeans, but his hair's messed up like he's been running his hands through it. "Thanks for coming on short notice.""Are you kidding? My startup's in the middle of funding hell anyway. I needed the excuse to escape." I study his face as he pulls into traffic. "Be

~ LEO POV ~The cursor blinks at me from the computer screen like a judgment. I've been staring at this background report for twenty minutes, and my coffee's gone cold in the mug beside my keyboard. The fluorescent lights in my office buzz overhead, casting everything in that harsh white glow that makes secrets feel uglier than they already are.Isabella Moretti. Age 23. Current address, employment history, educational background. All clean, all perfect. Too perfect.I lean back in my chair, the leather creaking under my weight. Twenty years in military intelligence taught me that when something looks too clean, you dig deeper. When Alex Walton asks you to run a background check on someone, you dig until your fingers bleed. The problem is, He loves her. That's not supposed to matter. I'm head of security for the Walton family now. My job is to protect their interests, their reputation, their empire. Personal feelings don't factor into the equation. Which makes what I'm about to find

**Alex POV**~ Few Days Later ~The last champagne glass clinked against the marble counter as I watched the final guest disappear through the gallery doors. Success. The word should have tasted sweeter on my tongue, but all I could think about was the way Isabella had looked at Austin during his speech tonight. Like he'd hung the fucking moon."Hell of a night." Austin's voice cut through my thoughts. He stood near the controversial centerpiece, the painting Isabella had chosen despite every advisor telling her it was career suicide. The piece that had somehow become the talk of the entire opening.I turned, loosening my tie. "Yeah. Hell of a night."My brother looked different in the dim gallery lighting. Softer somehow. His usually perfect hair was mussed from running his hands through it, a habit he'd picked up whenever Isabella was around. When had I started cataloging his tells?"The Times critic loved it," Austin continued, hands shoved deep in his pockets. "Said Isabella had '
