Outside, the city moved around her as though nothing had happened.

Taxis idled at the curb. A man shouted into his phone. Somewhere above her, forty floors up, a man she had loved for three years was standing in a room that still smelled faintly of her handwriting, and none of the people hurrying past her knew. She stood on the pavement and let the cold air fill her lungs.

Her phone rang. It was her oldest friend.

"Well? Did you actually do it?"

"I resigned."

A long silence. "Are you okay?"

Mia looked up at the glass tower, bright and enormous in the afternoon sun. She thought of his cold voice and his gray eyes, and the careful way he'd said by me. Then she looked down the street.

"I will be."

"So what now?"

"I have no idea."

"You don't sound scared."

"I'm terrified." She laughed, surprising herself. "But maybe it's better than staying somewhere that makes me small."

"Mia," her friend said slowly. "You've been talking about starting something of your own since I met you."

"I know."

"So do it."

She adjusted the strap of her bag. For the first time the idea didn't feel like a dream she was allowed to look at but never touch. "Maybe I will."

She ended the call and started walking. She didn't know where it would lead. She didn't know whether she would succeed, or whether she would ever see Alexander Vale again. But she knew she couldn't spend her life waiting for a man to decide whether she was worthy.

She had spent three years standing behind someone else's success. She wanted something that belonged to her.

,

At six o'clock, the temp left, and the floor went quiet.

Alexander sat alone in his office with the binder open in front of him. Everything was in order. Everything was exactly where Mia had left it, and still something was wrong, and it took him a moment to work out what.

He reached for his coffee, and his hand closed on nothing.

The cup had never been there. The temp had brought one at seven forty-five, and it had been wrong, a little too hot and slightly sweet, and he had pushed it aside. That was nine hours ago.

He sat looking at the empty space on the blotter.

Usually, when he needed something, he could say her name through the open door and she would answer. He knew exactly how it sounded, the quick small yes? from the next room, a tablet already in her hand.

"Mia."

He hadn't meant to say it aloud. The word dropped into the quiet and disappeared.

No one answered.

He looked at the door. For three years she had always answered. He had never once wondered what the sound of it was worth.

He picked up his phone and found her name. His thumb hovered over the screen, and he realized he had no idea what he would say. I'm sorry was too small, and come back was not something a man like him said.

He set the phone down.

It was only then, in the silence, that he understood something he had spent years refusing to look at. She had never simply been his assistant. She had been the person who held his life together, and he had let her walk out of it without once asking her to stay.

,

That night, Mia sat at her small dining table with a notebook open in front of her, the same kind she had carried for three years. On the first page she wrote a single question.

What do I want for myself?

She looked at it for a long time. Then she began to write, and none of it was about Alexander, or Vale International, or the life she'd lost. It was about herself: the things she loved, the things she was good at, the things she could build.

For the first time in years, the future belonged only to her.

She had no idea how far she could go. But she was finally ready to find out.

LEARNING THE BASICS Part OneStay away from Mia.Ethan's words followed him all night through a thin hotel mattress and a bad few hours of sleep, and they were still with him when he sat down at the desk by the printer. He hadn't argued. He had no right to. Mia had hired him, and she hadn't said a word to him since. The system locked him out three times before nine o'clock."Wrong password," the screen said. Then again. Then, a red box with a little padlock on it.Alexander stared at it. He had run a company with forty thousand employees. He had once signed a hundred million dollar deal on a plane. He could not get into a shipping program."Forgot your password already?"Kevin was leaning over the divider with a coffee in his hand and a grin on his face. The orange shirt was even brighter today."I didn't forget it," Alexander said."What is it?""I wrote it on the note Daniel gave me.""And?""And the note says the letter O. I think it's a zero."Kevin burst out laughing. A few head

The first job was a shipping schedule."It's easy," Daniel said. "A vendor in Ohio sends us boxes. We send them to three warehouses. You match the dates and make sure nothing gets double booked.""That's all?""That's all."It took Alexander forty minutes to do what Tasha did in ten. He didn't mind. He had never filled in a spreadsheet by himself before. There had always been someone to do it.At eleven he stopped and frowned at his screen."Daniel.""Yeah?""The Ohio boxes go to three warehouses. Two of them are in New Jersey, about ten miles apart.""Yeah.""Why not send everything to one and move it later?"Daniel came over and leaned on the divider. "Say that again?""It's two trucks instead of three. You'd save on fuel and on the driver's time. It's not a big number, but over a year it's a lot."Daniel was quiet for a moment."Okay," he said. "That's good.""I can set it up.""No."Alexander looked up."Write it up," Daniel said. "A page. Send it to me. I'll take it to the right

FIRST DAYPart OneThe cab ride cost eighteen dollars.Alexander paid, got out, and stood on the sidewalk for a second. He had never once looked at a fare before. Now, the number stayed in his head all the way up in the elevator.Seven forty. Five minutes early.Don't be late. He had heard it in her voice all weekend, flat and easy, like a door closing. He had never been late for anything in his life. Somehow, it still felt like a test. The woman at the front desk looked up and smiled the way people smile when they already know the answer."Can I help you?""Alexander Vale. I start today.""Of course." She typed something. "Daniel's coming to get you.""Thank you."He waited. Two women walked past with their coffee and slowed down. One of them leaned close to the other."That's him.""No way.""It's him. I saw the news."He kept his eyes on the wall in front of him. He had been stared at in a lot of rooms. Never like this, though. Back then they stared because they wanted something. T

"Operations," Mia said. "Entry level. Shipping schedules, vendor calls, whatever the team needs. You'll be at a desk on the open floor.""Fine.""You'll report to Daniel."Alexander went still."Daniel Reyes?""He's a team lead now."Alexander looked at the floor, then back up. "Page nine," he said."Excuse me?""The last time I spoke to him at Vale, I told him he had until noon. He had the wrong column on page nine.""He remembers.""He told you?""He told me before he said yes to this." She sat down again. "Daniel asked if he could work with you. I told him he didn't have to. He said he wanted to."Alexander rubbed the side of his thumb against the edge of his wrist, where his watch used to be. It was a habit she had noticed years ago. Now there was nothing there, and his thumb kept moving anyway."Why would he?" he asked."You'd have to ask him.""I'm asking you. Why are you doing this?""I'm not doing it for you.""Then who?""Me."He waited for more. She didn't give it."Here's h

THE INTERVIEW Part OneEthan knocked once and opened the door."Mia. He's here."Mia kept her eyes on the paper in front of her. She had read the same line four times."Send him in."Ethan didn't move. "I can stay.""I know you can.""I'd like to."This time she looked up. "Ethan. It's fine."He held her eyes a second longer. Then he stepped aside.Alexander walked in. He still walked the same way, back straight, like the room was already his. But the suit was old, and it hung a little loose on him. He stopped in front of the desk and waited.Ethan shut the door behind him. Slowly."Ms. Carter," Alexander said.Mia almost smiled. In three years he had never said her name like that. Back then he said "Mia" when he needed something, and nothing at all when he didn't."Sit down, Mr. Vale."He sat.She picked up his résumé. One page. It looked like it had been written by someone who never needed one."This is short.""I've never applied for a job.""Never?""My father gave me my first of

It took six weeks for everything to go.The cars were auctioned first, then the jet, then the art, one piece at a time, each sale announced in a polite email. The board formally removed him. The investigators interviewed him four times, each time with the same patient face. His lawyer stopped saying when this is resolved and started saying if. He moved from the penthouse to a suite, from the suite to a room, from the room to a smaller room in a hotel off Eighth Avenue, where the carpet smelled faintly of other people's cigarettes. He applied for jobs. Every firm he had ever done business with sent the same careful reply. We're sorry. We can't get involved. A man whose hand he had shaken at a hundred dinners declined to take his call and had his secretary say he was in a meeting. His name, it turned out, was now a thing people crossed the street to avoid.Pryce could not be found. The Singapore accounts led nowhere. Someone had built the trap carefully, and Alexander could feel the wal
