It took six weeks for everything to go.

The cars were auctioned first, then the jet, then the art, one piece at a time, each sale announced in a polite email. The board formally removed him. The investigators interviewed him four times, each time with the same patient face. His lawyer stopped saying when this is resolved and started saying if. He moved from the penthouse to a suite, from the suite to a room, from the room to a smaller room in a hotel off Eighth Avenue, where the carpet smelled faintly of other people's cigarettes.

He applied for jobs. Every firm he had ever done business with sent the same careful reply. We're sorry. We can't get involved. A man whose hand he had shaken at a hundred dinners declined to take his call and had his secretary say he was in a meeting. His name, it turned out, was now a thing people crossed the street to avoid.

Pryce could not be found. The Singapore accounts led nowhere. Someone had built the trap carefully, and Alexander could feel the walls without being able to see them.

On a gray Tuesday in the seventh week, he was sitting in the hotel's coffee shop with a laptop he could barely afford to keep charged when a voice said, hesitantly, "Mr. Vale?"

He looked up. The man standing over him was in his late twenties, in a good jacket, holding a paper cup. It took him a moment to place the face. Page nine. A formula that pulled from the wrong column.

"Daniel Reyes."

Daniel's eyebrows went up. "You remember."

"I remember threatening to fire you."

Daniel laughed, surprised into it. "You did." He glanced at the empty chair. "May I?"

Alexander gestured, a little stiffly. He felt, absurdly, as though he should have stood.

"I read about everything," Daniel said. "I'm sorry. That's a hell of a thing to go through."

"I didn't expect sympathy from you."

"Honestly? I wasn't sure I had any." Daniel turned the cup in his hands. "But someone once left a sticky note on my desk with the name of a column on it. I never forgot who did that. I never forgot who didn't say a word about it, either." He met Alexander's eyes. "I left Vale a few months later. I work for Mia Carter now."

The name went through Alexander like a blade. "Mia Carter."

"She runs Carter & Co. Luxury interiors, digital commerce. She hired me in her second year. It's the best job I've ever had." He smiled, a little proud. "She's a CEO. A real one. She built it from nothing."

Alexander sat very still. Somewhere in the back of his mind a door he'd kept closed for three years swung slowly open and he saw a girl in a doorway holding a tablet, saying I'm in love with you.

"She's hiring," Daniel said, more quietly. "Operations floor, entry level. It isn't glamorous." He hesitated. "I wouldn't send you there unless you meant it, Mr. Vale. She doesn't hire people who just want a paycheck."

Alexander looked at the cooling cup in front of him. Three years ago he had told Mia she could never belong in his world. His world was gone. He was sitting in a coffee shop being offered a way out by a man he had once frightened to death, and the way out ran straight through the woman he'd broken.

"Thank you, Daniel," he said slowly. "I'll think about it."

He thought about it for four days. On the fifth, he put on the only suit he still owned and went.

,

Mia was reviewing a spreadsheet when Ethan walked into her office and set a folder on her desk.

"A request came through HR. It's a strange one."

She opened it. The first page held a résumé, perfectly formatted, absurdly short in the way of a man who had never needed one. The name at the top was Alexander Vale.

She read it once. Then she read it again, slowly, as if the letters might rearrange themselves into something else. Her ears were ringing. Her tea, untouched, had gone cold at her elbow.

Ethan watched her face. "You know him."

"Yes."

"Do you want me to reject the request?" His voice was even, but his jaw had tightened, and she saw it. "One word, and it ends here. He'll never get past the front desk."

Some part of her wanted that. A large, bruised, three-year-old part of her wanted to say the word and close the folder and never think about him again. She pressed her palm flat against the page.

Three years ago she had stood in a lounge while a man she loved called her a nobody. She had cried all the way down in an elevator. She had written what do I want for myself? at a kitchen table. And now that man was waiting in her lobby, with nothing, asking her for a chance.

She did not do it out of mercy. She was honest enough to know that. It wasn't mercy that made her say, after a long moment, "Send him in."

"Mia,"

"I want to see his face." She closed the folder. "I want him to know what it's like to begin at the bottom and be judged by someone else."

Ethan studied her. "And if it hurts?"

"Then it hurts." She smiled faintly. "I'm not twenty-four anymore."

He nodded slowly and left without another word, though she saw something in his expression, protective and tired and unspoken, that she chose not to name.

She was alone. She rose and went to the window, then returned and sat down behind the long walnut desk, under the brass monogram. She folded her hands. She breathed.

Three years ago, Alexander Vale had told her she could never belong in his world.

Now he was coming into hers.

And this time, she was the one sitting behind the desk.

"Operations," Mia said. "Entry level. Shipping schedules, vendor calls, whatever the team needs. You'll be at a desk on the open floor.""Fine.""You'll report to Daniel."Alexander went still."Daniel Reyes?""He's a team lead now."Alexander looked at the floor, then back up. "Page nine," he said."Excuse me?""The last time I spoke to him at Vale, I told him he had until noon. He had the wrong column on page nine.""He remembers.""He told you?""He told me before he said yes to this." She sat down again. "Daniel asked if he could work with you. I told him he didn't have to. He said he wanted to."Alexander rubbed the side of his thumb against the edge of his wrist, where his watch used to be. It was a habit she had noticed years ago. Now there was nothing there, and his thumb kept moving anyway."Why would he?" he asked."You'd have to ask him.""I'm asking you. Why are you doing this?""I'm not doing it for you.""Then who?""Me."He waited for more. She didn't give it."Here's h

THE INTERVIEW Part OneEthan knocked once and opened the door."Mia. He's here."Mia kept her eyes on the paper in front of her. She had read the same line four times."Send him in."Ethan didn't move. "I can stay.""I know you can.""I'd like to."This time she looked up. "Ethan. It's fine."He held her eyes a second longer. Then he stepped aside.Alexander walked in. He still walked the same way, back straight, like the room was already his. But the suit was old, and it hung a little loose on him. He stopped in front of the desk and waited.Ethan shut the door behind him. Slowly."Ms. Carter," Alexander said.Mia almost smiled. In three years he had never said her name like that. Back then he said "Mia" when he needed something, and nothing at all when he didn't."Sit down, Mr. Vale."He sat.She picked up his résumé. One page. It looked like it had been written by someone who never needed one."This is short.""I've never applied for a job.""Never?""My father gave me my first of

THE FALLPart OneThe phone rang at six in the morning, and Alexander almost let it go.His bedroom was still dark, the curtains drawn. It rang again. He reached for it blindly. "Hello?""Mr. Vale, you need to come to the office." It was his head of security, and his voice sounded wrong. "There's a problem.""What kind of problem?""I think you'd better see it yourself."He dressed quickly. On the way down in the elevator he called Julian Pryce, because the numbers were Pryce's business and Pryce would know. The call went straight to a recorded message: this number is no longer in service. He tried again. Same voice, same flat tone. By the time his car reached Vale Tower he had a vague, unfamiliar tightness in his chest that took him a moment to name.It was uncertainty. He hadn't felt it in years. The lobby was full. Employees stood in clusters, whispering, phones pressed to their ears, and when he walked in, the whispering died as though someone had turned off a tap. He walked towar

That afternoon, Mia was alone in her office, reading a contract she had already read twice, when Ethan appeared again."You have a visitor. Victoria Sterling."She looked up. For a second, nothing in her moved. "Send her in.""You're sure?""I'm sure."Victoria came in like a woman entering a room she already owned: tall, blonde, in a pale silk dress that cost more than Mia's first month of rent had. She smiled. "Mia. It's been a long time.""Victoria."She looked around the office, at the windows, the brass monogram, the long walnut desk. "You've done well.""Thank you.""I suppose leaving Vale International worked out for you.""It did."Victoria sat down without being asked. "You were very devoted to him. I remember that.""I was devoted to my work.""Of course." The smile didn't move. Something about the way she said it made the back of Mia's neck prickle. "I wanted to see you, that's all. I'm curious about the people who were close to Alexander.""Why?""We're to be married. A wo

THREE YEARS LATERPart OneThree years later, the woman who used to stand outside Alexander Vale's door waiting for instructions had a door of her own.It was glass, like his had been, and behind it Mia Carter stood at a wall of windows with her arms crossed, watching Manhattan wake. Carter & Co. took up an entire floor of a building she could once only afford to look at from the sidewalk. Behind her desk, in brushed brass, hung the company's monogram, a tall C she had chosen herself and paid for with the first real profit she ever made. Her dark-brown hair fell loose over a cream blouse. She no longer dressed to be overlooked."You're supposed to be in the conference room."Ethan Reed stood in the doorway, a mug in one hand and an easy smile on his face. He was tall and sunburned from a weekend she hadn't taken, with the kind of calm that made investors relax the second he walked into a room."I'm early," she said."You're always early. I came to make sure you'd slept.""I slept.""M
