THE FALL

Part One

The phone rang at six in the morning, and Alexander almost let it go.

His bedroom was still dark, the curtains drawn. It rang again. He reached for it blindly. "Hello?"

"Mr. Vale, you need to come to the office." It was his head of security, and his voice sounded wrong. "There's a problem."

"What kind of problem?"

"I think you'd better see it yourself."

He dressed quickly. On the way down in the elevator he called Julian Pryce, because the numbers were Pryce's business and Pryce would know. The call went straight to a recorded message: this number is no longer in service. He tried again. Same voice, same flat tone. By the time his car reached Vale Tower he had a vague, unfamiliar tightness in his chest that took him a moment to name.

It was uncertainty. He hadn't felt it in years.

The lobby was full. Employees stood in clusters, whispering, phones pressed to their ears, and when he walked in, the whispering died as though someone had turned off a tap. He walked toward the elevators with his head up, the way his father had taught him.

"What happened?" he asked his assistant, who had hurried to meet him.

"A report was leaked at four this morning. It says Vale International has been moving funds through offshore accounts." She swallowed. "Julian Pryce emailed his resignation at five. He's left the country."

Alexander stopped walking. "Get legal."

"They're already in the conference room."

The board was waiting too, ten faces around a long table, none of them quite meeting his eyes. A thick file lay at his place. He opened it and read standing up.

The Singapore transfers. Eleven of them, over fourteen months, each one routed through a shell company he'd never heard of, each one ending in an account in a name he didn't recognize. Billions, altogether. And on every single page, in the authorization field, the same string of characters, the private codes he had memorized at twenty-six and shared with no one.

"This is false."

Nobody spoke.

"I said this is false."

One of the older directors lifted his head. "Then explain the codes."

"I don't need to explain a forgery."

"The authorities are already asking questions, Alexander."

"Then we give them everything."

"Your personal accounts were frozen at nine." The director's voice was almost gentle, which was the worst part. "We're trying to protect the company."

"From what?"

The silence went on a beat too long.

"From you," someone said quietly.

It struck him harder than a shout would have. He looked around the table at men who had followed every decision he'd made for ten years. They looked at their hands, at the file, at the window. Not one of them looked at him.

"You're removing me."

"No one said that."

"You didn't have to." He pushed back his chair. "This company is mine."

The director met his eyes at last, and Alexander saw that he was sorry, and that it didn't change anything.

"Not anymore."

The room was very quiet. Somewhere beneath his feet, the ground had gone soft.

He left the room with his phone buzzing in his pocket, buzzing again, buzzing, and for the first time in his life he did not look at it. In the corridor he stopped at a window, called one number, and waited.

"Alexander." Richard Vale answered on the second ring, as unhurried as a man ordering breakfast. "I've seen the news."

"It's a forgery. Someone used my codes."

"Of course someone did." His father sounded almost pleased. "Don't speak to the press. Don't speak to the board. Come to the house."

"Father,"

"I can make this go away. A few phone calls, a clerical error. By Friday it will be a bad week you tell at dinner parties." A pause, light as a feather. "There's only the small matter of the family trust. A signature, nothing more."

Alexander stared at the glass. The trust. His plan to dissolve it had been in a drawer for six months.

"I'll handle it myself."

"You always say that." Richard's voice didn't change. "Call me when you're ready to be sensible."

The line went quiet. Alexander stood at the window until his hand stopped shaking.

,

Victoria called at noon.

"Where are you?"

"At the office."

"My parents have been calling me all morning. Is it true? About the accounts?"

"I'll explain tonight."

"You sound very calm."

"I'm dealing with it."

She was silent a moment. Her voice, when it came, was practiced and soft. "Alexander, I need to ask you something, and I don't want you to think badly of me. If the accounts stay frozen, what happens to the prenuptial agreement? My father's lawyers would like to know."

He held the phone away from his ear and looked at it. It was the first question she had asked. He hadn't noticed that until now.

"Is that really what you're calling about?"

"Of course not. I'm worried about you." She said it a second too late. "I'm just trying to be practical."

"I'll call you tonight."

When he reached the mansion that evening, notices were already pinned to the front door. Inside, small red tags marked the paintings, the library, the wine cellar. A man in a gray jacket was cataloguing the cars through the garage window. Alexander stood in the middle of his own living room and read his name on a court order.

His phone rang. Victoria.

"I've spoken to my parents," she said. "They don't want me to marry you while this is unresolved."

He had known. "So you're leaving."

"I didn't say that."

"You don't have to."

"I do love you."

"Then stay."

A long breath. "I can't, Alexander. I don't know how to stand beside you through this."

He closed his eyes. "Okay."

"I'm sorry."

"Goodbye, Victoria."

He lowered the phone and sat down on the sofa he had picked out himself, the leather suddenly cold. It wasn't only the money. It was the quiet, in a house where the staff had not come in, where no one called, and where he had begun to understand that for years he had mistaken being needed for being loved.

LEARNING THE BASICS Part OneStay away from Mia.Ethan's words followed him all night through a thin hotel mattress and a bad few hours of sleep, and they were still with him when he sat down at the desk by the printer. He hadn't argued. He had no right to. Mia had hired him, and she hadn't said a word to him since. The system locked him out three times before nine o'clock."Wrong password," the screen said. Then again. Then, a red box with a little padlock on it.Alexander stared at it. He had run a company with forty thousand employees. He had once signed a hundred million dollar deal on a plane. He could not get into a shipping program."Forgot your password already?"Kevin was leaning over the divider with a coffee in his hand and a grin on his face. The orange shirt was even brighter today."I didn't forget it," Alexander said."What is it?""I wrote it on the note Daniel gave me.""And?""And the note says the letter O. I think it's a zero."Kevin burst out laughing. A few head

The first job was a shipping schedule."It's easy," Daniel said. "A vendor in Ohio sends us boxes. We send them to three warehouses. You match the dates and make sure nothing gets double booked.""That's all?""That's all."It took Alexander forty minutes to do what Tasha did in ten. He didn't mind. He had never filled in a spreadsheet by himself before. There had always been someone to do it.At eleven he stopped and frowned at his screen."Daniel.""Yeah?""The Ohio boxes go to three warehouses. Two of them are in New Jersey, about ten miles apart.""Yeah.""Why not send everything to one and move it later?"Daniel came over and leaned on the divider. "Say that again?""It's two trucks instead of three. You'd save on fuel and on the driver's time. It's not a big number, but over a year it's a lot."Daniel was quiet for a moment."Okay," he said. "That's good.""I can set it up.""No."Alexander looked up."Write it up," Daniel said. "A page. Send it to me. I'll take it to the right

FIRST DAYPart OneThe cab ride cost eighteen dollars.Alexander paid, got out, and stood on the sidewalk for a second. He had never once looked at a fare before. Now, the number stayed in his head all the way up in the elevator.Seven forty. Five minutes early.Don't be late. He had heard it in her voice all weekend, flat and easy, like a door closing. He had never been late for anything in his life. Somehow, it still felt like a test. The woman at the front desk looked up and smiled the way people smile when they already know the answer."Can I help you?""Alexander Vale. I start today.""Of course." She typed something. "Daniel's coming to get you.""Thank you."He waited. Two women walked past with their coffee and slowed down. One of them leaned close to the other."That's him.""No way.""It's him. I saw the news."He kept his eyes on the wall in front of him. He had been stared at in a lot of rooms. Never like this, though. Back then they stared because they wanted something. T

"Operations," Mia said. "Entry level. Shipping schedules, vendor calls, whatever the team needs. You'll be at a desk on the open floor.""Fine.""You'll report to Daniel."Alexander went still."Daniel Reyes?""He's a team lead now."Alexander looked at the floor, then back up. "Page nine," he said."Excuse me?""The last time I spoke to him at Vale, I told him he had until noon. He had the wrong column on page nine.""He remembers.""He told you?""He told me before he said yes to this." She sat down again. "Daniel asked if he could work with you. I told him he didn't have to. He said he wanted to."Alexander rubbed the side of his thumb against the edge of his wrist, where his watch used to be. It was a habit she had noticed years ago. Now there was nothing there, and his thumb kept moving anyway."Why would he?" he asked."You'd have to ask him.""I'm asking you. Why are you doing this?""I'm not doing it for you.""Then who?""Me."He waited for more. She didn't give it."Here's h

THE INTERVIEW Part OneEthan knocked once and opened the door."Mia. He's here."Mia kept her eyes on the paper in front of her. She had read the same line four times."Send him in."Ethan didn't move. "I can stay.""I know you can.""I'd like to."This time she looked up. "Ethan. It's fine."He held her eyes a second longer. Then he stepped aside.Alexander walked in. He still walked the same way, back straight, like the room was already his. But the suit was old, and it hung a little loose on him. He stopped in front of the desk and waited.Ethan shut the door behind him. Slowly."Ms. Carter," Alexander said.Mia almost smiled. In three years he had never said her name like that. Back then he said "Mia" when he needed something, and nothing at all when he didn't."Sit down, Mr. Vale."He sat.She picked up his résumé. One page. It looked like it had been written by someone who never needed one."This is short.""I've never applied for a job.""Never?""My father gave me my first of

It took six weeks for everything to go.The cars were auctioned first, then the jet, then the art, one piece at a time, each sale announced in a polite email. The board formally removed him. The investigators interviewed him four times, each time with the same patient face. His lawyer stopped saying when this is resolved and started saying if. He moved from the penthouse to a suite, from the suite to a room, from the room to a smaller room in a hotel off Eighth Avenue, where the carpet smelled faintly of other people's cigarettes. He applied for jobs. Every firm he had ever done business with sent the same careful reply. We're sorry. We can't get involved. A man whose hand he had shaken at a hundred dinners declined to take his call and had his secretary say he was in a meeting. His name, it turned out, was now a thing people crossed the street to avoid.Pryce could not be found. The Singapore accounts led nowhere. Someone had built the trap carefully, and Alexander could feel the wal
