The recording caught enough for me to understand what he had been doing. He had not been helping me. He had been preparing to take advantage of me while I could not defend myself. Nathan’s fingers finally worked the stubborn button free. The fabric gave a soft pop. He tugged the zipper down next, slow and sure. His shirt was already on the floor somewhere behind him. He unzipped his trousers too and climbed the bed. The cool air of the room touched his bare back. Nathan’s back was to the door. He worked with calm, unhurried motions, as if he had all the time in the world. He worked on Serena's last buttons as if he knew she would not wake up. The button hooked and refused to open. Serena did not stir. Her face stayed turned toward the wall. Clara’s stomach tightened. Nathan looked completely sure she would not wake. Emma glanced at Clara, then back at Lila. She crouched a little so her voice stayed near the child’s ear. “Look at me, okay? Don’t look that way. We’re just checking something.
