The ride back to Ashenreach was silent.

Smoke still clung to Elara's hair. Her hands wouldn't stop shaking.

They reached the castle gates just as the sun dropped behind the mountains.

Sable was waiting.

"He's alive," Sable said. "The scout. He made it."

Elara's chest loosened, just slightly. "Take me to him."

The infirmary smelled of herbs and blood. The scout lay pale against the pillows, his shoulder bound tight, his eyes finding Elara the moment she stepped through the door.

"You came back,"

  • THE BRIDE OF ASH   WHAT I SAW IN THE FIRELIGHT

The first guard lunged before Draven could even finish stepping into the chamber.Draven met him head on, blades ringing sharp against the low stone ceiling, and Cassian moved fast to intercept the second guard before he could reach Sable, his injured leg finally strong enough to hold under the strain of a real fight."Go!" Draven shouted over his shoulder. "Get her out!"Elara didn't hesitate. She crossed the chamber toward Sable, dropping to her knees to work at the ropes binding her wrists, fingers clumsy with adrenaline."You shouldn't have come," Sable said, though relief cracked through the words despite herself."You should have known I would."The cloaked woman hadn't moved from her spot near the fire, watching the chaos unfold around her with an unsettling calm that made Elara's skin crawl."Impressive," the woman said, her voice carrying easily over the clash of steel. "I didn't expect the Ash King himself to ride into a mining tunnel over one handmaiden.""She's not just a

  • THE BRIDE OF ASH   THE TRAIL EAST

The tracks led deeper into the hills, away from the border towns and toward terrain none of them recognized."They're not heading for Virell," Varek said, crouched low over a set of hoofprints pressed fresh into softened earth. "This path curves north instead. Toward the old mining roads.""Why there?" Cassian asked. "Nothing's operated in those mines for decades.""Which is exactly why someone might choose them," Draven said. "Abandoned places make good hiding spots. Fewer witnesses. Fewer questions.""How would they even know about mines this far from the border?" Cassian pressed. "This isn't Ashland territory. It's barely marked on any map I've seen.""Because whoever we're chasing has been planning this far longer than any of us have been paying attention," Varek said grimly. "That's the part that should frighten you more than the mines themselves."Elara kept her eyes fixed on the trail, refusing to let her mind wander toward what condition they might find Sable in by the time th

  • THE BRIDE OF ASH   WHERE SABLE WENT

Sable's room was empty when Elara knocked the next morning. "Sable?" She pushed the door open further, unease already prickling along her arms. The bed hadn't been slept in. A folded note sat on the small writing desk, Sable's handwriting quick and slanted, like she'd written it in a hurry. *I recognized part of that name. I need to confirm it before I bring danger to anyone else's door. Don't follow me. If I'm wrong, I'll be back before nightfall. If I'm right, it's better only one of us carries what I find.* Elara's stomach dropped. She grabbed the note and ran, finding Draven already in the war room, his expression darkening the moment she handed it to him. "She left alone," he said, reading it twice. "In the middle of everything happening right now." "She said don't follow her." "I don't intend to honor that," Draven said, already moving toward the door. "Sable doesn't run from danger. She plans for it. This isn't like her." "Maybe that's exactly why she went alone," Elara

  • THE BRIDE OF ASH   THE MISSING NAME

The archive sat behind a door Sable had to unlock with a key she wore against her skin, hidden beneath her collar alongside the mark."Nobody's opened this in years," she said, pushing the door wide. Dust rose in the torchlight, thick enough to taste.Shelves lined every wall, packed with ledgers bound in cracked leather, each one labeled by decade instead of name."How far back does this go?" Elara asked."Further than either kingdom has proper records for," Sable said. "The order kept better history than most thrones ever bothered to.""Why keep it at all," Cassian asked, "if the whole point was staying hidden?""Because forgetting is its own kind of danger," Sable said. "Every generation that loses its history has to relearn the same mistakes from nothing. This archive exists so we never have to."Draven pulled down a ledger from the nearest shelf, blowing dust from its cover. "What are we actually looking for?""Anyone who left the order," Sable said. "Not died. Left. Willingly or

"You gave us the location. It saved lives, whether you meant it to or not.""I didn't want to burn it." His voice cracked. "I have a daughter. I kept thinking about her, lying out there in the frost.""Then help her have a father worth remembering," Draven said from the doorway. The scout's eyes flicked to him, fear plain on his face. "He'll kill my family if I talk.""He'll try," Draven said. "I won't let him."Silence stretched between them. The sco

  • THE BRIDE OF ASH   WHAT THE FIRE SHOWED ME

Heat slammed into me the moment I crossed the threshold, thick smoke stinging my eyes, and for one terrifying second I thought I'd made a mistake I wouldn't survive long enough to regret. Then the gold light beneath my skin surged, and the fire around me seemed to bend, not extinguish, not weaken, but bend, curling away from my body like it recognized something in my blood that made me different from anything it was meant to consume."Elara!" Draven's voice cut through the smoke behind me, followed by the sound of him forcing his way through the entrance despite the soldiers' shouted protests."I'm alright," I called back, my own voice steadier than I expected given the flames still roaring around us. "The fire isn't touching me."He reached my side fast, his eyes wide with disbelief as he took in the sight of me standing untouched in the middle of what should have killed anyone within seconds. "That's not possible.""Apparently it is." I pressed forward deeper into the chamber, the f
