CHAPTER 5: THE LETTER THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

I read the letter until the words blurred before my eyes.

*Isabella must never discover what happened that night. If she learns the truth, everything will fall apart.*

Those words carried Alexander's signature, but I couldn't understand their meaning. What had happened that night? Why had someone wanted me to leave before a wedding announcement? And whose wedding had they been talking about?

I checked the date again.

Three years ago.

The same week I had packed my suitcase and left the man I loved without looking back.

My phone lay beside me, its screen displaying Alexander's name. He had called twelve times since our encounter outside the restaurant. Each missed call felt like another question I wasn't ready to answer.

I finally picked up the phone and typed a message.

*Did you write this letter?*

I attached a photograph and pressed send.

His reply arrived almost immediately.

*Where did you get that?*

My stomach tightened.

He hadn't denied writing it.

*Answer my question, Alexander.*

The typing indicator appeared, disappeared, and returned.

*We need to talk in person.*

I laughed bitterly.

Of course he wanted to meet. Alexander had always preferred conversations where he could control the atmosphere, choose his words carefully, and watch the other person's reaction.

But this time, I wouldn't give him that advantage.

*You have until tomorrow morning to tell me the truth. After that, my lawyers will contact yours.*

I switched off my phone.

For the next several hours, I tried to work. I reviewed collections, approved designs, and answered emails. My company had become my refuge because business followed rules. Contracts could be examined. Numbers could be verified. Mistakes could be corrected.

Love was different.

Love could make a woman doubt her own worth while convincing herself that patience would eventually be rewarded.

I had promised never to become that woman again.

At midnight, someone knocked on my apartment door.

I froze.

Nobody knew my address except Clara, my building's management, and a handful of trusted employees. I approached the door cautiously and checked the security screen.

Alexander stood outside.

His tie was loosened, his hair slightly disheveled, and his expression was nothing like the confident face I had seen in magazines.

I opened the door but kept the security chain fastened.

“You shouldn't be here.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you?”

“Because I can't explain this through a message.”

I studied him through the narrow opening.

“Start talking.”

He glanced at the chain.

“Please, Isabella.”

I hesitated before closing the door, removing the chain, and opening it again. I wasn't inviting him back into my life. I was allowing him to explain himself.

There was a difference.

He entered slowly and remained near the doorway.

I placed the printed letter on the table.

“Did you write it?”

Alexander examined the page. His face became pale, and his fingers tightened around the paper.

“Yes.”

The room seemed to tilt.

I had hoped he would deny it. I had hoped there was a simple explanation, a forgery, or some misunderstanding that would restore the little faith I still had in him.

Instead, he had confirmed my worst fear.

“What happened that night?”

He closed his eyes briefly.

“Three years ago, my father suffered a serious medical emergency. At the same time, our board was preparing to announce a major restructuring. Victoria's family had offered financial support, but they wanted a marriage agreement included in the negotiations.”

I folded my arms.

“And what did that have to do with me?”

“My father believed our relationship would become a problem. He thought you would be used against me by people who wanted control of Sterling Holdings.”

“So you wrote a letter telling someone to make me leave?”

“No.” His voice cracked. “I wrote it because I was trying to stop my father from doing exactly that.”

I stared at him.

“Explain.”

Alexander placed the letter on the table.

“My father wanted you out of my life. He believed you were a distraction, and he was convinced I would eventually sacrifice the company for you. I wrote that letter to warn someone in my office to protect you from his plans.”

“Then why does it say to make sure I leave before the wedding announcement?”

“Because my father intended to announce an engagement between Victoria and me, whether I agreed or not. I was trying to find a way to prevent it without putting you in danger.”

I shook my head slowly.

“You could have told me.”

“I wanted to.”

“But you didn't.”

His silence answered me.

I felt tears gathering in my eyes, and I hated that he could still make me feel so vulnerable.

“Do you know what I thought when you stopped showing up? I thought I wasn't beautiful enough, important enough, or worth enough to fight for. I blamed myself for loving you more than you loved me.”

Alexander stepped toward me.

“Isabella, you were never the problem.”

“Then why did you let me believe that I was?”

He stopped.

For several seconds, the only sound between us was the ticking clock on the wall.

Finally, he spoke.

“Because I was a coward.”

The admission surprised me more than any excuse could have.

“I thought I could solve everything myself. I believed that if I kept you away from the conflict, you would eventually be safe. I never imagined you would leave without giving me another chance to explain.”

I looked at him through my tears.

“You didn't lose me because I failed to understand you, Alexander. You lost me because you refused to let me stand beside you.”

He lowered his head.

“I know.”

“No, I don't think you do.”

I walked to the window, needing distance from the man whose voice could still awaken every feeling I had spent years trying to bury.

“Was the engagement real?”

“The announcement was planned. The marriage never happened.”

“And Victoria?”

“She knew our families wanted it. I made it clear that I wouldn't marry her.”

“Yet she's still beside you.”

“Our companies are negotiating a separate investment agreement. Her family believes they can pressure me into reconsidering.”

I turned toward him.

“And the clause in the partnership proposal?”

His expression hardened.

“I never authorized any clause that would give Sterling Holdings control of your company. If it's there, someone added it without my approval.”

For the first time, his anger seemed genuine.

But I had learned that sincerity and trust were not the same thing.

“I'll let my lawyers investigate,” I said.

“Of course.”

He looked at me as though he wanted to say something else.

“Isabella, I never stopped loving you.”

My heart ached at the words.

Once, they would have been everything I needed to hear.

Now, they were only words arriving three years too late.

“I believe that you may have loved me,” I whispered. “But I can't return to the person I was when I loved you.”

He nodded slowly, pain settling across his face.

“I won't ask you to.”

“Good. Because I'm not promising you anything.”

He walked toward the door, then turned back.

“There's something else you should know. The person who sent you that letter used an email address connected to my father's old office.”

My blood ran cold.

“Are you saying your father sent it?”

“I don't know. But if he did, he wanted you to find it.”

Alexander left a few minutes later.

I locked the door and stood alone in the silence, trying to understand the truth he had finally revealed.

Perhaps he hadn't abandoned me for another woman.

Perhaps fear, family pressure, and his own mistakes had destroyed us.

But one question remained.

Why had someone waited three years to send me that letter?

My phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

One message appeared on the screen.

*Now that Alexander has told you his version, ask him what happened to the woman who was supposed to marry him.*

A second message followed.

*Because Victoria Hale wasn't the only woman his family planned to sacrifice.*

I stared at the screen, my pulse racing.

Then a final message arrived.

*You were supposed to be his bride, Isabella. And someone made sure you never found out.*

I slowly lowered the phone.

The past wasn't finished with me.

And neither was Alexander Sterling.
