“Whatever she told you, don't believe it.”

Alexander's voice cut through the restaurant's quiet atmosphere, but I barely heard him. My eyes remained fixed on the photograph in my hand.

Three years ago.

The date was unmistakable. It was the same week I had waited for Alexander in his penthouse, hoping he would finally explain why he had canceled our anniversary dinner for the third time.

Instead, he had sent a message.

*Something important came up. I'll make it up to you.*

He never did.

Now, Victoria was sitting across from me, smiling as though she had just handed me the final piece of a puzzle I hadn't known existed.

I slowly placed the photograph on the table.

“What agreement is she talking about, Alexander?”

He glanced at Victoria. “This isn't the place.”

“That's convenient.”

“Isabella, please.”

I hated the way he said my name. Three years ago, that tone could make me forgive almost anything. Now, it only reminded me how easily he had used my love against me.

I stood and picked up my handbag.

“If you have nothing to hide, answer my question.”

Alexander stepped closer. “Our families discussed a possible business arrangement. That's all.”

“A business arrangement that involved you and Victoria?”

“It was a proposal. Nothing was finalized.”

Victoria laughed quietly. “You make it sound so innocent.”

Alexander turned toward her. “Enough.”

“No,” I interrupted. “Let her speak. I'm tired of men deciding which truths I'm allowed to hear.”

Victoria's expression brightened with satisfaction.

“Our fathers wanted Sterling Holdings and Hale International to merge their interests. A marriage between Alexander and me would have strengthened the agreement.”

I stared at Alexander.

“A marriage?”

“It never happened,” he said immediately. “I refused.”

“When?”

“Before I met you.”

Victoria lifted her glass. “That isn't entirely accurate.”

Alexander's jaw tightened.

I felt something cold settle in my stomach.

“Explain.”

Victoria placed her glass down.

“The agreement was revived while you were together. Our families believed Alexander would eventually agree if he understood what was at stake.”

“And did he?”

“No,” Alexander answered sharply. “I told them I would never marry someone because of a contract.”

For one brief moment, I wanted to believe him.

Then I remembered all the nights he had disappeared into meetings, the unexplained calls he had taken outside, and the occasions when he had promised to visit me only to cancel at the last minute.

“Did you know about the arrangement when we were together?” I asked.

He hesitated.

It was only a second.

But sometimes one second was enough to destroy whatever remained of your trust.

“Yes,” he admitted.

The answer struck harder than I expected.

“You knew?”

“I was trying to end it without damaging either company. I didn't want you involved in a family dispute.”

“So you decided I didn't deserve the truth?”

“I was protecting you.”

I shook my head.

“No. You were protecting yourself from having an uncomfortable conversation.”

His face tightened.

“You don't understand how complicated everything was.”

“Then you should have explained it to me instead of leaving me to wonder why I was never important enough.”

For a moment, his expression softened.

“I loved you, Isabella.”

“Maybe you did.”

The words hurt both of us. I could see it in his eyes, but I refused to let his pain distract me from my own.

“Love isn't just what you feel, Alexander. It's what you choose to do. And when I needed honesty, you chose silence.”

Victoria watched us with unmistakable interest.

I turned toward her.

“And you? Why are you telling me this now?”

Her smile faded.

“Because I want you to understand that Alexander's life is more complicated than you realize. His company employs thousands of people. His family has obligations. There are consequences to every decision.”

“Then perhaps you should discuss those consequences with him instead of using me as an audience.”

I gathered my things.

Alexander reached for my hand, but I stepped away before he could touch me.

“Don't.”

He stopped immediately.

“Isabella, let me explain everything.”

“Three years ago, I would have given anything to hear those words.”

My voice trembled despite my determination to remain calm.

“Today, I don't know whether I want to hear them at all.”

I walked toward the exit.

Alexander followed me outside, calling my name. The afternoon sun was bright, but the air between us felt unbearably cold.

“Please, just give me five minutes.”

I turned around.

“You've had three years.”

“I know I hurt you.”

“You don't know the half of it.”

He looked at me helplessly, and for the first time, I wondered whether the powerful Alexander Sterling truly understood what he had lost.

“I never chose Victoria over you,” he said. “I swear.”

“Perhaps not. But you chose to keep me in the dark. You let me believe that I was asking for too much when all I wanted was honesty.”

“I thought I could fix everything before it affected us.”

“And while you were fixing everything, I was breaking.”

He lowered his eyes.

Silence stretched between us until my phone rang.

Clara.

I answered immediately.

“Boss, there's a problem,” she said. “The legal team reviewing Sterling Holdings' partnership proposal found something unusual.”

“What?”

“The proposed contract includes a clause allowing Sterling Holdings to acquire a controlling interest in our company under certain financial conditions.”

My blood ran cold.

“Are you certain?”

“We're checking the original documents now, but the clause is there.”

I looked at Alexander.

He was watching me, confusion spreading across his face.

“Did you know about this clause?” I asked.

“What clause?”

“The one that could give your company control over mine.”

His expression changed instantly.

“Isabella, I would never do that to you.”

“Then explain why it's in your contract.”

He reached for his phone.

“I'm calling my legal department.”

“Don't bother. My lawyers will handle it.”

I ended the call and stepped away from him.

Perhaps Victoria had been telling the truth about more than I wanted to believe. Perhaps Alexander's world was full of agreements, hidden motives, and people willing to sacrifice others for power.

But I refused to become another sacrifice.

That evening, I sat alone in my apartment, reviewing the documents Clara had sent. Every page seemed to reveal another reason to distrust the partnership.

Then an email arrived from an unfamiliar address.

The subject line contained only five words.

**THE REAL REASON HE LEFT YOU.**

My hands grew cold as I opened the message.

There was one attachment: an old letter bearing Alexander's signature.

I began reading.

*Isabella must never discover what happened that night. If she learns the truth, everything will fall apart.*

Beneath the sentence was another line.

*Make sure she leaves before the wedding announcement.*

I read it again and again.

The letter was dated three years ago.

The week I walked away.

And suddenly, I could no longer tell whether Alexander had failed to fight for our love—or whether someone had deliberately arranged for me to lose it.

I couldn't stop staring at the message on Alexander's phone.Do not tell her what happened to her mother. For years, I had lived with the belief that my mother's death was a tragedy my family had simply endured. I asked.Alexander shook his head. "I don't know, Isabella. I've never heard him mention her before.""Then why would he tell you not to tell me?""I intend to find out.""No." I stepped back. I wanted him to laugh and explain that someone had played a cruel joke on us.Instead, he stood beside my desk with his jaw clenched and his eyes fixed on the paper."Where did you get this?" I asked."From my father's private study. He kept it inside a locked cabinet with several old contracts.""And you only discovered it last week?""Yes."I studied his face, searching for a lie."Why didn't you bring it to me immediately?""Because I didn't know what it meant. I needed to verify the signatures and understand the agreement before involving you."I let out a bitter laugh."Still making decisions for me, Alexander?"He flinched."I know how that sounds.""No, you don't. You keep saying you want to

The message wouldn't leave my mind. You were supposed to be his bride, Isabella. And someone made sure you never found out.I read it repeatedly, hoping the words would somehow change. They didn't.For three years, I had believed my relationship with Alexander Sterling ended because he couldn't love me the way I needed. Now, I was beginning to suspect that someone had deliberately taken that choice away from us.But why?Who would go to such lengths to separate two people? And what did they stand to gain?At six the following morning, I called Clara."I need you to investigate Alexander's family," I told her as soon as she answered. "Especially anything connected to a marriage arrangement three years ago."There was a pause."Boss, are you sure you want to get involved in this?""No," I admitted. "But I need to know the truth.""All right. I'll start immediately."After ending the call, I opened my laptop and searched through old photographs from my relationship with Alexander. Most s
