ERDEM

Two days after I caught Hendrix in the corridor, I assigned him to cleanup duty.

He was given simple tasks: helping servants clear dishes after meals, organizing storage rooms, assisting with laundry. Menial work designed to be humiliating for someone who'd sat beside me at the captain's dinner.

I watched Hendrix through surveillance as he moved through the estate performing servant duties with the same careful precision he applied to everything else.

He didn't complain or resist. Didn't show any sign that he considered the work degrading.

Konstantin entered my office with the daily security report.

"Sir, Hendrix has been compliant during cleanup duties," he said.

"He's too compliant, Konstantin," I said. "Keep him away from the lower levels."

"Yes, sir."

HENDRIX

On the third day of cleanup duty, I was assigned to help clear wine storage after a delivery.

The same storage room where the steward had entered the code I'd memorized. The same area near the service corridors I'd tried to access.

Coincidence? Or a test?

I worked alongside two other servants-an older man named Gregor and a younger woman named Anya-moving crates, organizing bottles, updating inventory logs.

They talked while they worked, comfortable.

"-heard they're moving it," Gregor said quietly, glancing toward the door.

"Moving what?" Anya asked.

"The Red ledger. Damir told the security team to prepare for a vault transfer."

My hands didn't stop moving, didn't show any reaction, but every nerve in my body focused on the conversation.

The Red Ledger. What is that?

"Why would they move it?" Anya sounded nervous. "It's been in the lower vault for years."

"Because the boss has recently been asking questions, digging into old files. Mara doesn't want him finding certain things." Gregor's voice dropped even lower. "Things that should stay buried."

"What kind of things?"

"The kind that get people killed for knowing about them."

They fell silent as a guard passed by the storage room entrance, and I continued organizing bottles with steady hands while my mind raced.

A Ledger. A record of something important enough for Mara to hide from Erdem? What could Mara hide there?

Could it also contain information about Liora?

That night, I lay in my glass cage and stared at the ceiling, my mind working through everything I'd learned.

How do I access the ledger? The vault is protected by security I can't bypass and locks I can't pick.

I needed someone with access.

Someone powerful enough. There are only two men in this house who could help.

Erdem and Silas.

But I trust neither.

SILAS

I stood outside Erdem's office, listening to him work late into the night, hearing the sound of files being opened, records being reviewed.

He's searching for something, something in the old file. What could he be looking for? Anyway, I don't care.

I pulled out my phone and sent a message to Niko Arzan:

Let's meet.

The response came quickly:

okay, I will send you a location.

I pocketed the phone and smiled.

The meeting place was one of Niko Arzan's choices. A private room above a dockside club.

I stood by the window and looked out at the black water, I did not like being made to wait, it was even bad that I had been told to wait by a man who was not my brother.

The door opened at last.

Niko Arzan entered without apology, followed by one guard who stayed near the threshold and another who shut the door behind him. Niko wore a dark coat cut too sharply for the docks.

"You came alone," Niko said.

I gave a small smile. "You sound disappointed."

"I sound cautious."

"That's better habit than bravery."

Niko's expression didn't change. He took the chair opposite me and sat down as if the room already belonged to him.

"Say what you came to say," Niko said.

I folded one hand over the other.

"Erdem is becoming difficult."

Niko's eyes sharpened a fraction. "That's your opening?"

"It's the truth."

"The truth is cheap." Niko leaned back. "Give me something expensive."

I let the silence stretch just long enough to matter.

Then: "He's distracted, he's changing the way he handles things."

"Are you just here because his presence makes you look small, or do you have anything important to tell me," Niko said.

"There is someone new in Erdem's house."

"A guard?" Niko asked.

"Someone Erdem refuses to treat like a prisoner that he is."

Niko said nothing for some time.

"Who is this someone?" Niko asked.

I rested my fingertips against the table. "A purchased informant."

"Name."

"Hendrix."

Niko repeated it once, as if testing whether the sound carried any weight.

"He's clever," I said. "Too clever for his own good. He even stole a passcode and went into the service corridor."

"And Erdem hasn't killed him."

"No," My smile returned, faint and ugly. "That's the point."

Niko leaned forward slightly. "You think the boy matters."

"I think," I said, "that Erdem is making room around him."

Niko's eyes stayed on my face.

"Why tell me?"

My answer came cleanly, because it had to.

"Because when my brother falls, I get everything he has now."

For the first time Niko looked amused.

"You want the throne."

"I want Erdem broken."

"Those are not the same thing."

My smile hardened. "They usually are in my family."

Niko was quiet for a moment, then he asked. "Why not do it yourself?"

"Because I don't want to be the one holding the knife when it happens," I said.

"I think you are scared of losing again. What do you want from me?"

I wanted to be angry so bad for what he said, but this was no time for that.

"Support, routes, pressure on the docks. A reason for Erdem to split his attention even more."

"And what do I get?"

I looked at him directly. "Access."

Niko's gaze did not move. "To what?"

"To the weak point in my brother's house."

I did not say Hendrix's name again, I didn't need to.

Niko understood.

Niko stood, signaling the meeting was over before I had fully decided it was.

At the door, he paused.

"He better be worth it," Niko said.

"I'm sure he is."

Niko left with his guards.

I remained in the room a little longer, listening to the thud of the club below. After a deal had been made.

Not friendship and not even a truce.

Just two predators recognizing the same weakness and deciding to aim at it from different sides.

HENDRIXErdem entered with Konstantin behind him before I could finish dressing. He wore a dark shirt with the sleeves rolled to his forearms. The bandage beneath his shoulder was hidden, but his movements remained slightly measured from the wound. He had not slept well. I could see it around his eyes.Konstantin carried a tablet and several folders.Erdem walked toward me and handed me a box.I took the box."What do you think it is?""Jewelry.""Do you wear jewelry?""No.""Then you know better."I opened it and held the band between two fingers."It's a tracker.""Yes."The answer was so direct that I looked up."Put it on," he said.I looked at the band again."No."Konstantin lowered his eyes toward the tablet, suddenly very interested in whatever was displayed there.Erdem did not move."Say that again.""No."I don't care what will happen, I'm not wearing this.He stepped closer, stopping just within reach."It isn't a request.""I know.""Then put it on."I placed the band on

ERDEMThe man was begging. That was what I remembered first. Not his face, not his name.Only the sound of his voice breaking against the walls."Please."The word echoed in my head."Please, I have children."I was fourteen. My hands were too small for the pistol my father had placed in them, but the weapon felt heavy enough to belong to someone already ruined. The grip pressed into my palm. My finger rested beside the trigger exactly as I had been taught. The man knelt in front of me, his shirt was torn. One side of his face had swollen shut, blood ran from his mouth and dripped onto the concrete between his knees. My father stood behind me."Look at him," he said.I did.The man's eyes were wide with terror. My father's hand settled against the back of my neck. Not gently, he was never gently."What do you see?"I swallowed hard."A traitor.""Wrong."The man looked at me."Please, son. Please, I didn’t—"My father's fingers tightened."What do you see?"I stared at the kneeling ma

  • THE DEVIL'S TOY CAME FOR REVENGE    Chapter 18: Watched By The Devil's Brother

HENDRIXIf Erdem was watching me more closely, I needed to watch him back. The idea had formed during Mara's tea.The estate was full of cameras. I knew which cameras covered the main corridors, which ones overlapped, and which sections had blind spots created by old architecture. What I did not know was what Erdem said when he believed no one was listening. I needed to know who came to his office, what names were spoken there, whether the raid had revealed an actual leak and whether the Red Ledger was ever discussed outside the vault. I needed information. I reached my room and closed the door behind me. No one stopped me but that did not mean I was alone. A guard stood in the corridor outside, another was posted farther down near the stairwell. I lowered my eyes and sat on the edge of the bed. Then I began to work. The red thread came first. Then a metal which came from the clasp of an old laundry tag I had found beneath the bed two nights earlier. It had taken patience t

HENDRIXA maid entered my room carrying a silver tray with tea, bread, and a small white envelope resting beside the cup. She placed everything on the table near the window, kept her eyes lowered, and stepped back."From Mrs. Veyra," she said.Mrs. Veyra.I looked at the envelope without touching it.The maid waited."Does she expect an answer?""Yes."The maid's fingers tightened around the edge of her apron.I picked up the envelope. My name was written across the front in dark, elegant handwriting.Hendrix Vale.Inside, there was one line.Tea in ten minutes Come alone.I almost laughed.Come alone. In Erdem's house, no one came alone. There were cameras in every hall, guards stationed outside every important door, and servants who carried information more efficiently than any telephone, even the walls seemed to have ears.Still, the invitation was not really a request for privacy.I glanced toward the camera in the corner.Last night's interrogation still lived beneath my skin.I

  • THE DEVIL'S TOY CAME FOR REVENGE    Chapter 16: Beneath The Innocence

ERDEMThe estate was quiet when we returned.Very quiet. There was blood on the tires of the vehicles, blood on the sleeves of my men, blood drying in the seams of Hendrix’s coat. The warehouse raid had ended, but the violence had followed us home like a second convoy.Men moved through the entrance hall, speaking in low voices while security sealed every door and searched every vehicle that had left with us. No one wasted time. The attack on the estate had already made the household nervous.I ignored the movement around me.My attention remained on Hendrix. He stood beneath the entrance lights, pale-faced and silent, his hands hanging loose at his sides. Anyone looking at him without understanding would have seen a frightened young man who had survived a gunfight by luck.I had watched him kill. The dead man’s last words kept returning to me.Ash.He had killed the man because he knew what came next. Then he had hidden the blade as though it had never been there."Take him to the in

  • THE DEVIL'S TOY CAME FOR REVENGE    Chapter 15: The Name I Buried

ERDEM The warehouse sat at the edge of the river district. From the outside, it looked ordinary enough. Concrete walls. Rusted metal shutters. Two loading bays. Floodlights mounted high on the corners. Men moving crates in the dark with the stiff, efficient posture of people who knew enough not to ask what they were handling. That was how Niko liked his operations. I stood across the street in the black of the parked vehicle and watched the building through the rain-streaked glass while Konstantin finished his briefing on the comm. "Three exits confirmed," he said. "Front bay, rear service door, and a narrow dock access on the west side, and at least twelve armed men." "Any sign of Niko himself?" "No." I looked at the building and said nothing for a moment. Then: "He doesn’t need to be here." Konstantin hesitated. "No, sir." That was the problem with men like Niko Arzan. They never stayed where the blood would touch them if they could help it. They made other men hold the
