HENDRIX

I had learned that the Veyra estate moved in rhythms.

Not peaceful ones.

Controlled ones.

That morning, I was told to accompany Erdem across the courtyard.

No explanation, just the command.

My mind was elsewhere.

On the Red Ledger, in the Vault.

On the fact that Erdem now knew I wanted something buried beneath his house, and that he had not yet decided whether to stop me or use me.

I did not like not knowing which.

By the time I stepped out into the hall, the estate had already shifted into that dangerous, formal quiet that came before movement. Guards lined in the corridor.

Konstantin stood near the far archway with a tablet in his hand, speaking to one of the men in a low voice I could not hear.

Erdem was waiting at the end of the hall.

He stood with one hand in his pocket and the other resting loosely at his side, dressed in black as if he had been born from shadow instead of blood.

Erdem looked up, his eyes landed on me and stayed there for a second too long.

"Come," he said.

I followed.

Four guards went ahead of us, Konstantin remained behind, speaking quickly into his earpiece.

I walked beside Erdem at a measured distance, not close enough and also not far.

The kind of distance that said I knew where I was allowed to be.

We moved down the steps into the courtyard, and the air changed at once.

Erdem stopped near the center path and spoke to one of the guards, but I only caught fragments.

"Transfer."

"Lower wing."

"Move now."

I lifted my eyes just enough to see that there were two servants waiting near the side entrance with a covered cart between them.

Something about that irritated me immediately.

The estate never did ordinary unless it was hiding something.

Konstantin emerged from the hallway a few seconds later and said something to Erdem in a low voice. Erdem didn't turn his head.

He listened without looking away from the courtyard wall, which told me more than the words did.

He was alert. More alert than before.

Then I saw it.

A flash.

So small I could have mistaken it for light hitting metal.

But I knew better.

My body reacted before my mind finished naming it.

"Erd-"

The shot cracked through the courtyard.

The sound hit first, sharp and violent, and then everything else unfolded at once.

Guards shouted.

One of the service men hit the ground.

A second followed immediately after, and someone screamed from the far side of the path.

Erdem moved before I did.

He grabbed me hard at the shoulder and shoved me down with a force that knocked the breath from my chest. I stumbled against him.

Then we fell down as the world exploded into noise.

The guards were suddenly everywhere and nowhere, moving in fractured shapes across my vision, drawing weapons, shouting coordinates, dragging the servants toward cover.

I saw the sky once, gray and open above the courtyard wall.

Then Erdem's body was in front of mine.

I heard the bullet strike near us, then I felt it.

Not in me, but on him.

His shoulder jerked, and his breath caught sharply against my ear.

Blood hit my hand. Warm, my fingers twitched.

A strange, unwanted heat went through me when I realized the blood on my hand was his.

For a split second I forgot the gunfire and I could not move.

I could only register the fact that he had taken the hit because he had put himself between me and the line of fire.

A guard shouted, "West wall! West wall!"

I finally looked toward the edge of the courtyard where the stone pillars met the upper windows.

I saw movements, fast. Then gone.

Erdem swore under his breath and tightened his grip on me as another shot struck the stone near our left side.

Erdem's voice came low. "Stay down."

A bullet struck the stone beside us again.

Dust jumped.

I kept myself low, my face partly turned toward the ground, because Erdem was too close.

Who was shooting?

Silas?

No. Silas was too close to home for this kind of open move unless he wanted something more than death.

It had to be someone testing the security of the estate.

Or someone was trying to see what Erdem would protect.

And if they had chosen this moment, it meant they knew exactly where I was.

That thought chilled me more than the gunfire.

Erdem rose just enough to fire back, one-handed, with the kind of precision that made everything around him seem clumsy.

He did not waste bullets.

I noticed that even now.

Even bleeding, even while half shielding me with his body, he fired with control.

The shooter on the roofline disappeared behind cover.

My pulse jumped, and I hated the flare of fear that went through me because it was not the fear of death.

It was the fear of being seen almost reaching for a pistol.

The fear of missing my chance. And the fear of how close I had been, close to ending Erdem.

And the fact that he had just saved me.

Erdem shifted, dragging me a little more behind the fountain wall. His shoulder brushed mine.

I felt the stiffness there immediately, the injury tightening with each movement.

"Move!" one of the guards yelled.

Another voice barked back, "Cover the east exit!"

Erdem pulled me hard again, this time toward the stone edge of the fountain and into the partial cover of the lower hedge line. His hand was warm and bloody at my upper arm.

He glanced at me once, quick and sharp.

"Are you hit?"

"No."

My answer came immediately.

My body had begun to respond before my hatred could keep up.

After the shooting, a guard appeared on the left, crouched low and speaking fast to Erdem.

"The west shooter is gone, others are down."

Erdem's eyes stayed on the far wall. "Find him."

The guard moved.

Erdem looked at me again.

This time his stare was deep and sharper.

He had no idea how close he had come to being dead with my hand on a pistol and my mind half a heartbeat from choosing.

And that fact sat in my chest like a live wire.

"You stay where I can always see you," he said.

I couldn't say a thing.

Because now I knew something I had not been prepared to know.

Erdem Veyra would put himself in front of a bullet if the bullet was meant for me.

And I did not know if that made him weaker, crueler, or far more complicated than I wanted him to be.

HENDRIXErdem entered with Konstantin behind him before I could finish dressing. He wore a dark shirt with the sleeves rolled to his forearms. The bandage beneath his shoulder was hidden, but his movements remained slightly measured from the wound. He had not slept well. I could see it around his eyes.Konstantin carried a tablet and several folders.Erdem walked toward me and handed me a box.I took the box."What do you think it is?""Jewelry.""Do you wear jewelry?""No.""Then you know better."I opened it and held the band between two fingers."It's a tracker.""Yes."The answer was so direct that I looked up."Put it on," he said.I looked at the band again."No."Konstantin lowered his eyes toward the tablet, suddenly very interested in whatever was displayed there.Erdem did not move."Say that again.""No."I don't care what will happen, I'm not wearing this.He stepped closer, stopping just within reach."It isn't a request.""I know.""Then put it on."I placed the band on

ERDEMThe man was begging. That was what I remembered first. Not his face, not his name.Only the sound of his voice breaking against the walls."Please."The word echoed in my head."Please, I have children."I was fourteen. My hands were too small for the pistol my father had placed in them, but the weapon felt heavy enough to belong to someone already ruined. The grip pressed into my palm. My finger rested beside the trigger exactly as I had been taught. The man knelt in front of me, his shirt was torn. One side of his face had swollen shut, blood ran from his mouth and dripped onto the concrete between his knees. My father stood behind me."Look at him," he said.I did.The man's eyes were wide with terror. My father's hand settled against the back of my neck. Not gently, he was never gently."What do you see?"I swallowed hard."A traitor.""Wrong."The man looked at me."Please, son. HENDRIXIf Erdem was watching me more closely, I needed to watch him back. The idea had formed during Mara's tea.The estate was full of cameras. I knew which cameras covered the main corridors, which ones overlapped, and which sections had blind spots created by old architecture. What I did not know was what Erdem said when he believed no one was listening. I needed to know who came to his office, what names were spoken there, whether the raid had revealed an actual leak and whether the Red Ledger was ever discussed outside the vault. I needed information. I reached my room and closed the door behind me. No one stopped me but that did not mean I was alone. A guard stood in the corridor outside, another was posted farther down near the stairwell. I lowered my eyes and sat on the edge of the bed. Then I began to work. The red thread came first. Then a metal which came from the clasp of an old laundry tag I had found beneath the bed two nights earlier. It had taken patience t

She placed everything on the table near the window, kept her eyes lowered, and stepped back."From Mrs. Veyra," she said.Mrs. Veyra.I looked at the envelope without touching it.The maid waited."Does she expect an answer?""Yes."The maid's fingers tightened around the edge of her apron.I picked up the envelope. My name was written across the front in dark, elegant handwriting.Hendrix Vale.Inside, there was one line.Tea in ten minutes Come alone.I almost laughed.Come alone. In Erdem's house, no one came alone. There were cameras in every hall, guards stationed outside every important door, and servants who carried information more efficiently than any telephone, even the walls seemed to have ears.Still, the invitation was not really a request for privacy.I glanced toward the camera in the corner.Last night's interrogation still lived beneath my skin.I

ERDEMThe estate was quiet when we returned.Very quiet. There was blood on the tires of the vehicles, blood on the sleeves of my men, blood drying in the seams of Hendrix’s coat. The warehouse raid had ended, but the violence had followed us home like a second convoy.Men moved through the entrance hall, speaking in low voices while security sealed every door and searched every vehicle that had left with us. No one wasted time. The attack on the estate had already made the household nervous.I ignored the movement around me.My attention remained on Hendrix. He stood beneath the entrance lights, pale-faced and silent, his hands hanging loose at his sides. Anyone looking at him without understanding would have seen a frightened young man who had survived a gunfight by luck.I had watched him kill. The dead man’s last words kept returning to me.Ash.He had killed the man because he knew what came next. Then he had hidden the blade as though it had never been there."Take him to the in

  • THE DEVIL'S TOY CAME FOR REVENGE    Chapter 15: The Name I Buried

ERDEM The warehouse sat at the edge of the river district. From the outside, it looked ordinary enough. Concrete walls. Rusted metal shutters. Two loading bays. Floodlights mounted high on the corners. Men moving crates in the dark with the stiff, efficient posture of people who knew enough not to ask what they were handling. That was how Niko liked his operations. I stood across the street in the black of the parked vehicle and watched the building through the rain-streaked glass while Konstantin finished his briefing on the comm. "Three exits confirmed," he said. "Front bay, rear service door, and a narrow dock access on the west side, and at least twelve armed men." "Any sign of Niko himself?" "No." I looked at the building and said nothing for a moment. Then: "He doesn’t need to be here." Konstantin hesitated. "No, sir." That was the problem with men like Niko Arzan. They never stayed where the blood would touch them if they could help it. They made other men hold the
