Cassandra stood in the doorway of her grandmother's room, watching Evelyn pack a small bag.

Her grandmother's hands were shaking. Every movement was slow, deliberate, painful. Cassandra wanted to help. Wanted to take over. But something held her back.

"I can't believe this is happening," Evelyn murmured, folding a sweater. "After all these years..."

"Gran." Cassandra stepped forward. "You knew. All this time, you knew about the necklace. About Mom. About everything."

Evelyn paused. Her shoulders sagged.

"Yes," she whispered. "I knew."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Evelyn turned to face her. Her eyes were red, glassy with unshed tears.

"Because I was trying to protect you," she said. "Your mother gave her life for you. I wasn't going to let that be for nothing."

Cassandra's throat tightened. "I don't understand. What was she trying to protect me from?"

Evelyn set down the sweater. She walked to the bed and sat down heavily, her joints protesting.

"Your mother was a brave woman," Evelyn began. "Too brave for her own good. She uncovered something terrible—evidence of crimes committed by powerful men. Men who would do anything to keep their secrets hidden."

"Who were they?"

"I don't know all the names. Your mother never told me everything. She said it was safer that way." Evelyn's hands twisted in her lap. "But she knew she was in danger. She made a plan to hide the evidence. And she trusted the wrong person to help her."

"Trusted who?"

Evelyn looked toward the door. Dante stood in the hallway, his expression unreadable.

"Him," Evelyn said softly. "She trusted him."

Cassandra turned to face Dante. "She trusted you. And you let her die."

Dante's jaw tightened. "I was nineteen years old. I didn't know what I was doing. I tried to help her, but—"

"But it wasn't enough."

"No." His voice was raw. "It wasn't enough."

Cassandra stared at him. She wanted to hate him. Wanted to blame him for everything. But something in his eyes stopped her. Something broken.

"Your mother knew the risks," Evelyn said quietly. "She knew she might not survive. But she didn't care. All she cared about was you."

Cassandra sank onto the bed beside her grandmother. Her legs wouldn't hold her anymore.

"She gave me the necklace," Cassandra whispered. "She hid evidence inside it. And I've been wearing it my whole life."

"Yes." Evelyn's voice cracked. "And now they've found you."

Cassandra looked down at the pendant. It was warm against her skin, heavy with secrets she didn't understand.

"They want the necklace," she said. "The men in the apartment. They wanted to kill me and take it."

"Yes."

"And you knew this whole time. You knew I was in danger, and you never told me."

Evelyn's face crumpled. "I thought if I kept you hidden—if I kept you small and quiet—they'd never find you. I thought I was protecting you."

"Gran—"

"I was wrong." Tears streamed down Evelyn's face. "I was so wrong. And now you're in danger because of me."

Cassandra pulled her grandmother into a tight embrace. She felt Evelyn's body shake with sobs.

"It's not your fault," Cassandra whispered. "None of this is your fault."

"It is," Evelyn choked out. "I should have told you. I should have prepared you. I should have—"

"Stop." Cassandra held her tighter. "Just stop. We're going to figure this out. Together."

---

Dante watched the scene from the doorway.

His chest tightened. He'd seen pain before. Caused it, even. But this was different. This was a family being torn apart because of secrets he'd helped bury twenty years ago.

He stepped back into the hallway, giving them privacy.

His phone buzzed. Marco.

"What?"

"The safe house is ready. Your mother made arrangements. The grandmother will be protected."

"Good."

"Dante—there's something else."

"What?"

"The men who attacked you. The trail is getting warmer. We found a connection to the Moretti family."

Dante's blood went cold. "What kind of connection?"

"Someone inside. Someone with access to your schedule. Your movements. Your—"

"Who?"

"We don't know yet. But Dante—whoever it is, they're close. They knew exactly where you'd be. Exactly when you'd be there."

Dante's hand tightened on the phone. Someone in his own circle had betrayed him.

And that someone knew about Cassandra.

"Keep digging," he said. "Find them. And when you do—"

"I know. I'll handle it."

Dante ended the call. His mind was racing. Someone inside his family wanted him dead. Wanted the necklace. Wanted Cassandra dead.

He couldn't trust anyone.

Except her.

---

Cassandra emerged from the bedroom, her face pale but determined.

"My grandmother is ready," she said. "We can leave whenever you're ready."

Dante nodded. "I've arranged a safe house. She'll be protected."

"And me?"

"You're coming with me."

Cassandra's eyes met his. "To your house?"

"Yes."

She didn't argue. Didn't fight. Just nodded.

"Okay," she said quietly. "I'll pack."

---

Dante watched her disappear into her room. He heard drawers opening, clothes rustling. She was packing her life into a single bag.

He should feel victorious. He'd found her. She was coming with him. He was protecting her, just like he'd promised Grace all those years ago.

But he didn't feel victorious. He felt heavy. Guilty.

She was just a girl. A normal girl with a normal life. And he'd just destroyed everything.

---

Cassandra emerged with a small bag. She'd changed into a blue sweater—soft, worn, the kind of sweater that had been loved for years.

Dante stared at her. Something in his chest shifted.

"You ready?" he asked.

She nodded. "Ready."

---

The car ride was silent. Cassandra sat in the back, her grandmother beside her. Dante drove, his eyes fixed on the road.

Through the rearview mirror, he watched Cassandra. She was staring out the window, her hand wrapped around the necklace.

I'll protect you, he promised silently. Even if you hate me for it.

The Moretti mansion loomed before them, cold and unwelcoming.Cassandra stepped through the front doors, Dante's hand warm in hers. They were here for resources—weapons, allies, a base of operations for the final confrontation with Marcus Kane. The safe house was no longer secure. They needed somewhere with more protection. But the moment they crossed the threshold, a familiar voice sliced through the air."Well, well. Look who finally decided to come home."Big Aunty stood at the top of the staircase, her arms crossed, her smile sharp as a blade. She was dressed in a silk robe, her hair perfectly coiffed, her eyes cold and calculating.Cassandra's stomach tightened. She'd hoped never to see this woman again."Aunt," Dante said flatly. "I thought I told you to leave.""I came back." Big Aunty descended the stairs, her heels clicking against the marble. "This is my home. My family. You can't just banish me.""I can. And I did."---Big Aunty's smile faltered. Then it returned, sharper

Who had Marcus Kane taken? Who was he holding over her head now?Dante's jaw was tight. His hands were clenched into fists at his sides. He didn't know either. But he wasn't going to wait to find out."Search the building," he ordered his men. "Every room. Every closet. Every inch. Cassandra stood frozen in the doorway of the café.The man sitting beside Adrian had her eyes. Her nose. Her chin. He was older—gray streaked through his dark hair, lines etched around his eyes—but the resemblance was unmistakable. It was like looking into a mirror that showed her future."Cassandra," Adrian said softly, rising from his chair. "This is Daniel. Your father."Her father. The word felt foreign. Wrong. She'd spent her whole life believing her father was dead—a man she'd never known, a loss she'd mourned without ever understanding. And now here he was. Alive. Real.
