Dante stared at the text.

"You want the records? Come and get them. Bring Cassandra. Or I'll release everything."

His jaw tightened. His hands curled into fists around the phone.

Cassandra stood beside him, her hand on his arm. "What does it say?"

He showed her.

She read it twice. Her face went pale. "It's a trap."

"I know."

"But if you don't go—"

"He'll release the records." Dante's voice was flat. "Every crime. Every secret. Every murder. The Moretti name will be destroyed. And he'll keep hunting us."

Cassandra insisted on coming.

Dante refused. He told her it was too dangerous. He told her she needed to stay with Grace. He told her he couldn't risk her.

She wouldn't back down.

"I'm not letting you walk into a trap alone," she said. "We face this together. Or not at all."

Before Dante could respond, Grace's cry cut through the house.

It wasn't her usual hungry wail. It was weak. Feeble. A thin, reedy sound that made Cassandra's blood run cold.

She rushed to the nursery.

Grace was pale—her tiny face flushed with fever, her body burning. She was barely moving. Barely crying.

"Something's wrong," Cassandra whispered. "Dante—something's wrong."

---

Dante called the doctor.

He arrived within the hour—the same old man who'd treated Dante's wounds, who'd delivered Grace. He examined Grace carefully, his face growing grimmer by the second.

"She has an infection," he said quietly. "It's serious. She needs to be hospitalized."

Cassandra's legs gave out. Dante caught her before she fell.

---

They rushed Grace to the hospital.

The doctors took her away for tests—blood work, scans, monitors. Cassandra stood in the hallway, her body shaking, her heart pounding.

Dante stood beside her, his arm around her waist. He didn't speak. He couldn't.

Hours passed in silent.

Grace was stable—but critical. The doctors said she needed to stay in the hospital for observation. They said she was fighting. They said she was strong.

Cassandra refused to leave her side.

And, Donald was still out there.

The meeting was still set. The threat was still real.

Dante made a decision. He would go to the meeting alone. Cassandra would stay with Grace.

"No," Cassandra said. "I'm not letting you go alone."

"You have to stay with her. She needs you."

"She needs both of us."

Dante cupped her face.

His eyes were steady. His voice was calm.

"I'll come back," he said. "I promise. But you need to stay with Grace. She needs you more than I do."

Cassandra's eyes filled with tears. She nodded.

"Come back to me," she whispered.

"Always."

---

Dante arrived at the warehouse an hour later.

It was dark. Quiet. Abandoned. The kind of place where no one would hear you scream.

Donald was waiting.

He wasn't alone. He had men—armed, trained, ready for a fight. They stood in the shadows, their weapons raised.

"You came," Donald said. "I wasn't sure you would."

"I'm here." Dante's voice was cold. "Let's end this."

The confrontation began dangerously.

Donald demanded the records. Dante refused. Donald threatened Cassandra. Dante pulled his gun.

The warehouse erupted into chaos.

Gunfire. Shouts. The sound of bodies hitting the floor. Dante fought through the chaos, his eyes searching for Donald. He found him—running toward the back door.

Dante fired. Missed. Donald disappeared into the night.

---

Dante returned to the hospital.

Cassandra was waiting in the hallway, pale and trembling.

"She's stable," she whispered. "But she's not out of danger yet."

Dante pulled her into his arms.

"We'll get through this," he said. "Together."

---

Cassandra sat beside Grace's incubator, her hand pressed against the glass.

Grace was so small. So fragile. Tubes and wires were attached to her tiny body—monitors beeping softly, tracking every heartbeat, every breath. She looked peaceful, almost like she was sleeping. But Cassandra knew better.

The doctors said she was stable. They said she was fighting. They said the next twenty-four hours were critical.

Cassandra didn't move.

Dante stood behind her, his hands on her shoulders. He didn't speak. He didn't try to pull her away. He just stayed.

Hours passed. The hospital room was quiet—the only sounds were the beeping monitors and the soft hum of the fluorescent lights. The world outside was dark.

Cassandra's mind raced.

She should have noticed the fever sooner. She should have been more careful. She should have protected her daughter better.

It was her fault. All of it.

Dante knelt beside her.

He took her hand. His fingers were warm against her cold skin.

"It's not your fault," he said quietly.

She looked at him. Her eyes were red, swollen.

"How do you know?"

"Because I know you. You would never let anything happen to her. You love her more than anything."

"I should have—"

"No." His voice was firm. "You did everything right. The doctors said so. This isn't on you."

---

Samantha arrived at midnight.

She rushed into the room, her face pale, her eyes wide. She crossed to Cassandra, pulling her into a tight embrace.

"I came as soon as I heard," Samantha whispered. "How is she?"

"Stable." Cassandra's voice cracked. "But she's not out of danger yet."

Samantha held her tighter.

Daniel came too.

He stood by Grace's incubator, his hand pressed to the glass. His face was pale. His eyes were wet.

"She's strong," he said quietly. "She's a fighter. Just like her mother."

Cassandra looked at him. Her throat tightened.

"Just like her grandmother," she said.

Daniel nodded. A tear slid down his cheek.

---

The night stretched on.

Cassandra didn't sleep. Didn't eat. She just sat there, watching Grace, praying for a miracle.

Dante stayed by her side. He held her. He whispered reassurances. He told her everything would be okay.

At 3 AM, he brought her milk. She didn't drink it.

At 5 AM, he sat beside her and held her hand.

"I love you," he said quietly.

She looked at him. Her eyes were red, swollen.

"I love you too."

---

At 6 AM, Grace's fever broke.

The monitors showed improvement. The doctors were cautiously optimistic.

"She's turning the corner," the doctor said. "She's going to be okay."

Cassandra burst into tears.

Dante pulled her into his arms. She sobbed against his chest, her body shaking, her heart pounding.

"She's okay," she whispered. "She's okay."

"She's okay," he echoed.

---

That morning, Grace was stable.

She was still in the hospital, but she was out of danger. The doctors said she'd be able to go home in a few days.

Cassandra finally allowed herself to rest.

Dante sat beside her, his arm around her shoulder. She leaned into him, her eyes closing.

"We did it," she whispered.

"We did it."

---

That afternoon, Cassandra received a text.

She glanced at her phone, expecting a message from Samantha or Daniel or one of the nurses.

An unknown number.

She opened it.

"Congratulations on the baby. Too bad she won't live to see her first birthday."

  • THE DON'S MISSING PIECE    The Weight Of Everything

Dante couldn't sleep. He sat in the hospital waiting room, his elbows on his knees, his head in his hands. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead. The vending machine whirred. The night nurse shuffled past, her footsteps soft against the linoleum. He didn't look up.The memory played on a loop in his mind—Donald's face, the gunshot, the body falling. He'd killed before. He'd killed his own father. He'd killed men who deserved it. But this time, it felt different. He didn't want to do it.He'd stood there, his finger on the trigger, his hand trembling. He'd listened to Donald's apologies, his regrets, his broken words. He'd seen the fear in his eyes. And he'd pulled the trigger anyway. He stood abruptly. He needed air. He needed to get out of this room, out of this hospital, away from the beeping monitors and the antiseptic smell. He walked through the automatic doors and stepped outside. The night air was cold against his skin. The parking lot was empty—just a few cars, a few streetli

  • THE DON'S MISSING PIECE    An Uninvited Guest

Dante took Cassandra to look at properties by the lake. They'd been searching for weeks—ever since that night on the porch when he'd promised her a real home. He'd made calls, talked to real estate agents, narrowed down the list. Now, finally, they were here. The first house was too big. A sprawling mansion with more rooms than they could ever fill. Cassandra walked through it, her footsteps echoing against the marble floors, and shook her head."Too cold," she said. "Too empty."Dante nodded. He didn't argue.---The second house was too small.A tiny cabin with one bedroom and a kitchen that barely fit two people. Cassandra stood in the doorway, looking at the cramped space, and laughed."We'd kill each other within a week."Dante grinned. "Probably."---The third house was perfect. It was a small cottage on the edge of the water—wooden, warm, surrounded by trees. The paint was peeling. The floors creaked. The roof needed work. But it had something the other houses didn't.It had s

They found footprints outside the nursery window. Fresh. Someone had been there. Recently.Dante doubled the security. Tripled it. He told Cassandra she wasn't to leave the house. No exceptions. She didn't argue.---Evan dug into the letter that afternoon. He examined the handwriting. The paper. The photograph. He cross-referenced everything with old files, old records, old enemies. He found something.A name. Someone connecte

  • THE DON'S MISSING PIECE    New Feels Good

Grace wouldn't sleep. She'd been crying for hours—not the soft, hungry cry from before, but a piercing, relentless wail that seemed to echo through the entire house. Cassandra had tried everything. Feeding. Changing. Rocking. Singing. Nothing worked. She was exhausted. Her body still ached from the birth. Her eyes burned with fatigue. Her mind was foggy.Dante was beside her, just as exhausted. He'd been taking turns with her—walking Grace around the room, singing softly, begging her to sleep. His voice was hoarse. His eyes were red."She hates us," he muttered."She doesn't hate us. She's a baby.""She's a tyrant."---At 5 AM, Cassandra broke down. She was sitting on the floor of the nursery, her back against the wall, tears streaming down her face. Grace was still crying in her arms. The sound was like a knife through her skull."I can't do this," she whispered. "I can't. I'm not strong enough."Dante found her there. He sat beside her, his back against the wall, his shoulder brush
