CHAPTER 25: Grown-woman armor

NINE YEARS AGO

MADELYN’S 18TH BIRTHDAY

I was finally eighteen. The air felt different—charged, promising. I had been waiting for this day for a very long time. The day where I would no longer be seen nor treated like a little girl by the man that I dreamt of.

A slow, steady pulse of excitement beat under my skin as I twirled in front of my vanity mirror. This was it. My first real chance to step out of the “little girl” box Zachary had always kept me in.

Kailee told me that the exact dress did the magic with her brother's friend. They were happily dating now. I knew it would be unfair to compare her twenty three year old college boyfriend, Jack to Zachary.

It was unfair.

Not to be cocky, but Zachary was thirty one and enigmatic. Jack still came to pick Kailee up from high-school in his high-school jock jacket.

I slipped out of the dress and carefully placed it on my bed. That was for later.

I had butterflies in my stomach and springs in my st

CHAPTER 44: I saw it tooLenny’s question hung in the air like the heavy perfume Julia leaves behind when she walks past. Just like now. It made me more pissed to hear her ask that question. She left her seat across the table to come and sit beside me. She took my hand gingerly in hers.“I think I'll give you two some privacy. I'll go check on the girls in the kitchen,” Mary pressed my shoulders softly as she passed me. Soon the door softly clicked shut, leaving me alone with Lenny.“Mads, what’s going on with you?” she asked, frowning, glancing at the door Mary just closed a few seconds ago to give us privacy.I didn't answer her right away. Instead, my eyes remained on the door as if it could give me answers to the ache that had been pounding in my chest since last night. Her voice was quieter when she spoke again. “You’ve been on edge since this morning. You don't look happy. You didn't even tell me how the party went last night,” she pouted sadly. “And I can't seem to notice th

CHAPTER 43: What is going on with you?Mary was already in the breakfast room, fussing over the tea set like it was a royal banquet, when I came in.“You should sit down and have breakfast, Mary. Let the staff handle the rest. You're not the help here.” I said, pulling out the chair beside me.She gave me that look she’d perfected over decades — part exasperation, part fondness. “And yet, I can’t seem to stop helping. I can't help it, dear. It's not in my nature to sit at a place.”She disappeared into the kitchen and reappeared with a steaming cup. Her eyes softened, but she only set the cup in front of me and murmured, “Eat first. Talk later.”I took a sip of the coffee and it was exactly what I needed.“How was the party?”I dropped the cup and turned to her, my eyes dimming. “It was okay.”She frowned slightly, sitting on the chair across from me. “Just okay?”I nodded, lifting the cup to my lips again.“You were already in bed, tucked in by Zachary when I went to your bedroom l

CHAPTER 42: It was the spriteI was still simmering, about to boil over in rage when I closed the front door behind Julia. I headed up the stairs but decided against it and saw her out first. It took all of my self restraint to discharge her the way I did. My hand was tight around the brass handle, my jaw set. The brazenness of her, doing that in my home, under my roof, knowing fully well that my wife was upstairs. Madelyn was right about her. And so was father. Madelyn.Immediately, the memory of those retreating footsteps flashed back in my head. I still heard them in my mind, light, quick, but distinct. My eyes quickly looked towards the top of the stairs. Whoever it was had seen something they shouldn’t have. Could it have been Madelyn? My feet kicked into motion. I took the stairs two at a time and headed straight for her bedroom. I knew I had put her to bed before going down to hear Julia out, which in retrospect was a mistake. I didn't know I was anxious until relief loosen

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 41: A stolen kiss

CHAPTER 41: A stolen kiss“Good evening.”I spun around to see the elderly housekeeper that Zachary had recently reinstated. I was not here when she used to work there before. But for some reason, I didn't like her. She was a strong ally of Madelyn.I forced a polite smile. “I'm Julia.”She smiled. “Of course. I've heard a lot of things about you… from the staff.”The corners of my mouth lifted in a smile. “Good things, I hope?”“Of course.”“That's a relief.”“It's quite late, dear. Are you waiting for Zachary or would you be leaving soon?”There was nothing bad in her tone nor about what she had said, but I felt a surge of anger. It was like reminding me that I had no place here, and that I shouldn't wait so late for another woman's husband.“I'm waiting for Zachary.”“Alright, dear.”Within a matter of weeks I had become more of a guest than a strong feature in Zachary's home. Before, I could move around as I wanted and do what I pleased. I even decorated the house. Zachary didn'

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 40: I kissed her

CHAPTER 40: I kissed her“Excuse me.” That was all I had said to the executives I was talking with when I glanced around the room and saw Patricia among the group of women that Madelyn was in.Even now as i stood beside Madelyn, my hand on her waist, I watched the Bomer Matriarch try to act cool. I didn't need a crystal ball to know why she was here. She was looking for a supporter. An ally. Against i and Madelyn. Against us.Just now when i had shut her down, her smile didn’t falter when I told her to stop. I knew that look. It was the same one she’d given after my announcement at the board meeting. I knew she was just pretending to have pulled back. She was up to something. Definitely planning something, a calculated patience before a kill.“Are you okay?” I asked the woman in my arms. She lifted her eyes me. “I'm okay. I can handle Patricia.” Patricia glanced at the women still gathered around us. The wives and girlfriends of the business executives who were in attendance. Those

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 39: Wives first

CHAPTER 39: Wives first Lenny had the patience of a darn saint. I, on the other hand, was almost two pins away from ripping the offending dress off and declaring myself “fashionably late” in pajamas. It was the night of the event that Zachary had informed me about, and Lenny was determined that I was going to be the cynosure of all eyes.“Hold still, Mads,” she muttered, tugging the zipper up the back of my gown. “You act like I’m putting you in a very ugly straightjacket.”For me it might very well have been that. I didn't really care for fashion. But I could still put together a mean ensemble when I felt like it. The dress Lenny had chosen was a burgundy satin dress that fit like a glove with a deep slit that ran up my thigh. The plunging neckline drew attention to my collarbone where a diamond set that had arrived from Zachary earlier this evening sat delicately.“You grumble like I'm putting you in those ugly jumpsuits,” she continued to mutter as she stood after finally pulli
