CHAPTER 37: Who's boss?

“Really? That really happened?” I asked the blushing maid who was stirring the pot of stew over the stove.

She nodded slowly, a small bashful smile playing on her lips as her gaze dropped lower to avoid my eyes.

How shy she is now!

But she wasn’t so shy when she was getting freaky with the driver in the garden.

After I left Madelyn with Mary, I was heading back to my room when my nose picked up the aroma of the delicious stew, and my ears caught the sound of laughter and gossip—all coming from the same direction.

I loved both.

So that was how I ended up here in the kitchen with two of the maids. Rosa the one cooking—the freaky one, and Lola the loud one who was cheering on her friend.

I was leaning against the kitchen counter now, laughing with Rosa and Lola as we tasted the steaming pot of stew they’d been fussing over all morning, even before I joined them some minutes ago.

“Are you sure it's good, madam?” Rosa asked, biting her lips nervously.

I stopped

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 40: I kissed her

CHAPTER 40: I kissed her“Excuse me.” That was all I had said to the executives I was talking with when I glanced around the room and saw Patricia among the group of women that Madelyn was in.Even now as i stood beside Madelyn, my hand on her waist, I watched the Bomer Matriarch try to act cool. I didn't need a crystal ball to know why she was here. She was looking for a supporter. An ally. Against i and Madelyn. Against us.Just now when i had shut her down, her smile didn’t falter when I told her to stop. I knew that look. It was the same one she’d given after my announcement at the board meeting. I knew she was just pretending to have pulled back. She was up to something. Definitely planning something, a calculated patience before a kill.“Are you okay?” I asked the woman in my arms. She lifted her eyes me. “I'm okay. I can handle Patricia.” Patricia glanced at the women still gathered around us. The wives and girlfriends of the business executives who were in attendance. Those

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 39: Wives first

CHAPTER 39: Wives first Lenny had the patience of a darn saint. I, on the other hand, was almost two pins away from ripping the offending dress off and declaring myself “fashionably late” in pajamas. It was the night of the event that Zachary had informed me about, and Lenny was determined that I was going to be the cynosure of all eyes.“Hold still, Mads,” she muttered, tugging the zipper up the back of my gown. “You act like I’m putting you in a very ugly straightjacket.”For me it might very well have been that. I didn't really care for fashion. But I could still put together a mean ensemble when I felt like it. The dress Lenny had chosen was a burgundy satin dress that fit like a glove with a deep slit that ran up my thigh. The plunging neckline drew attention to my collarbone where a diamond set that had arrived from Zachary earlier this evening sat delicately.“You grumble like I'm putting you in those ugly jumpsuits,” she continued to mutter as she stood after finally pulli

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 38: No arguments

CHAPTER 38: No arguments I was almost at Mary’s door when their voices drifted out into the hallway. I was heading in the direction of her room after Lenny had told me that Madelyn was with her. I slowed my steps, catching Madelyn’s voice—low, edged with something I couldn’t quite place.“…Mary, can a relationship really survive on secrets?”I didn't catch what Mary had said to her earlier but her question landed like a stone in my chest. I had no idea why I was even affected. For a second, I stood there considering walking away and pretending like I hadn’t heard anything. It didn't take more than a minute for me to realise that I couldn't. I was annoyed to realise that I was becoming more affected by the things she did and said. But that was the thing about Madelyn, she could be halfway across the house, and she’d still manage to get under my skin. In the past, I could easily ignore her. But now, she was beginning to burrow deep into my skin.I’d spent the afternoon in my offic

CHAPTER 36: What I wishedMadelyn helped me onto the bed so I could be more comfortable. Now, I sat propped up against the headboard, my legs still weak, trembling from the fainting spell. But my mind was sharper than it had been in days. The young woman's face was pale, her eyes swollen from tears, but she sat beside me on the bed, my hand clasping hers, and her other hand placed firmly over mine. I realised that she had gone through a lot in the time that I had left her alone. She was like a woman who had no strength to fight the problems that kept seeking her out at every turn.My heart constricted and my eyes welled as I listened quietly while she spoke. I squeezed her hand every now and again.Piece by piece, she laid it all out. How she had tried to find happiness and love after she was left all alone. How she met her ex-boyfriend who became her ex-husband. How she had been made to sign the marriage certificate by Zachary.I knew that part. He told me everything a few days afte

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 35: Not enough to see you hurt

CHAPTER 35: Not enough to see you hurtI barely remembered the drive back. After Zachary had coldly declared the conversation closed, it was as though he had also closed off his awareness and reaction that someone else was in the car. As soon as we arrived his company building, “Take her home,” he ordered the driver, still without looking at my face. He even stepped out of the car without as much as a tiny backward glance. At that point it felt like the tiny crack that had appeared in his impenetrable walls had been repaired. And I had a feeling that it was never going to be easy to crack again. Never. As the car tore down the road to the mansion, my mind kept replaying the look on Zachary’s face, the sharpness of his words, the finality of it and the silence that followed. It was a silence that felt heavy. The one that gives you that feeling of pain, especially when you fail to reach an objective. That night after I blacked out. I briefly opened my eyes. And I saw him stand beside
