My landlord’s call woke me up from my short nap. I didn’t even know when I fell asleep. I was scared of answering the call because I knew why he was calling. He called two more times, but I still ignored him.

“Anna, why aren’t you answering your calls?” Daniel asked curiously.

“It’s a spam call,” I lied. I didn’t want him to start worrying about anything. He nodded and went back to pressing his phone. “I’ll be back in a minute.”

I walked out of the ward and dialed Mr. Amos’s number. He answered on the first ring.

“Hey Annabel, when am I getting my rent? It’s already the end of the month,” Mr. Amos said.

“I’m sorry, sir. My twin brother just had his heart surgery, but I can assure you that once he’s out of the hospital, I will pay the rent and clear out any outstanding,” I said. I knew it was a lie.

“I don’t care if your brother is dying or alive,” Mr. Amos said. “I just want my money, and I’m giving you till Sunday to come up with my money, or else you will be out on the streets.” And

Immediately, I entered Daniel’s new ward. Ethan shoved my hand away, looking at me angrily.“Why did you take to Mr. Richard that way?” he asked.“He was being rude to you, and I was defending you.”“Did I tell you to defend me? Don’t you know who he is? He’s the richest man in America, and I would have used that opportunity to my advantage,” Nathan said.“What opportunity are you talking about, Nathan?” I asked him. I don’t understand what he’s talking about.“Forget it, you’re just useless. And besides, how do you know Mr. Richard?” he asked curiously.I panicked. I wasn’t expecting the question from him, and I definitely can’t tell him what happened between me and Mr. Richard. “We just met here at the hospital,” I lied.“Whatever, I’m going back home. You’ve ruined my mood,” Nathan said as he walked out of Daniel’s ward and slammed the door behind him. I breathed a sigh of relief. That was a close call. I went to check on Daniel, and he was sleeping so peacefully. I gave him a quic

Daniel’s surgery was successful, and I was relieved. I stayed right by his bed for three whole days, only leaving to grab food for both of us from the hospital cafeteria. He kept asking how I was able to raise the five hundred thousand dollars for his operation, but I always changed the subject each time he brought it up. I couldn’t tell him about the awful thing I did.On the fourth day, Daniel was strong enough to move to a normal room. The nurses pushed his bed down the hall, and I walked beside him, holding his backpack with his comic books and our old family photo. This room had a big window looking out at a park, and it wasn’t as noisy as the intensive care unit. No more constant beeps, just people talking softly.“Anna, you look stressed out,” Daniel said in his weak voice. His face was still pale, but his eyes sparkled again. The doctors said he would get better, but it would take time.“I’m okay,” I lied, smiling at him. “You’re safe now, and that’s all that matters.”He grab

I couldn’t sleep at all throughout the night. My body was heavy with exhaustion and the guilt of what I had done, but my mind was already racing ahead. Daniel. The hospital. The operation. Last night felt like a distant, hazy dream or rather, a nightmare I had willingly stepped into. My muscles ached in places I didn't know could ache, a constant reminder of my sins. But there was no time for regrets now. I had to get out of here, pay for my brother’s heart surgery, and pretend this never happened.Beside me, Mr. Richard was still asleep, his chest rising and falling with deep, even breaths. His arm was draped loosely over my waist, and I carefully lifted it away, sliding out of bed without waking him. The room was a mess empty champagne bottles on the nightstand, my clothes scattered across the floor. I shivered and pulled the sheet around me for a moment as I stood there, staring at the door. Freedom was just a few steps away, but I felt trapped, like the walls were closing in.I

Spend the night with me and I will give you the money you need for your brother’s surgery,” Mr. Richard said. He grabbed my hand and placed it on his already hard cock.I quickly pulled my hand from him and ran out of the room. Before I could run to the reception, my phone rang again. Doctor Gabriel. I hurriedly answered the call.“Miss Annabel, your brother’s condition has worsened. We need to perform the operation as soon as possible or else your brother will die,” Doctor Gabriel said on the phone.“No please, my brother cannot die, Doctor, please help me,” I begged him. But he had already ended the call, so I stood in the hallway crying. I won’t let my brother die, even if it means going back to Mr. Richard’s room. I turned back and walked back to Mr. Richard’s room. I raised my hand to knock on the door, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. Then I remembered what Doctor Gabriel had said on the phone. My brother’s life depends on this now. I straightened my clothes and knocked on
