THIRD POV

The air in the medical bay smelled like rubbing alcohol and old blood. Tarek stood by the metal sink. He scrubbed his hands under the running water, over and over, trying to get the red stains out from under his fingernails.

The heavy iron door groaned open. Korr walked in first. His right hand was completely wrapped up in thick white tape and wooden splints, his broken fingers held stiff against his palm. Rylan followed right behind him. His eyes were totally bloodshot, his face pale

  • THE LAST BREEDER, CLAIMED BY FOUR   CHAPTER 166

EDALThe three days passed in a fast, busy blur.Every corner of Haven bustled with preparation. Blacksmiths worked through the night, their heavy iron hammers ringing against anvils as they sharpened new spear tips and checked horse shoes. In the lower yards, guards and wild wolf trackers loaded five heavy pack horses with cured meats, dried fruits, and sacks of fine northern barley. On the morning of our departure, the sun rose clear and golden over the crags. Warm air blew through the valley, melting the last ice patches along the stone walls.I stood in the main courtyard, wearing my thick wool riding tunic, high leather boots, and polished silver armor. My long blonde hair was woven into a tight braided crown. Beside me stood Korr, Rylan, and Tarek, all dressed in their formal dark cloaks and steel mail. Nikolai and ten of his best wild trackers waited near the open gates, holding the reins of their sturdy mountain horses.Ezra walked up to us, carrying a warm leather flask fille

  • THE LAST BREEDER, CLAIMED BY FOUR   CHAPTER 165

EDALThe sun broke over the eastern crags, sending long beams of gold across the valley floor. For the first time in four months, the morning wind did not cut like a frozen knife. Water trickled down the heavy stone gutters of Haven as the thick ice on the roofs began to melt, dropping heavy splashes into the slushy yards below. The great thaw had officially begun.I stood on the timber platform near the granary, watching the lower yard come alive.Messenger Vanya and her four northern riders were resting in the lower hall, their horses fed and brushed in the warm stalls. Down by the eastern wall, Nikolai and Gregor were organizing a team of thirty wild wolf hunters to clear the fallen timber along the trade road, making way for the spring caravans."You are up early, Commander," a low, familiar voice spoke from behind me.I turned to see Nikolai walking up the wooden steps. He carried his iron spear across his shoulder, his dark hair damp from the morning mist. His dark eyes held a w

  • THE LAST BREEDER, CLAIMED BY FOUR   CHAPTER 164

EDAL The morning came with a pale grey light that broke over the frozen peaks.Down in the lower yard, thirty new milk cows stood inside the warm wooden stables. The air smelled of sweet hay, warm manure, and fresh pine sawdust. Small children from the lower town stood near the stable doors with empty wooden buckets, waiting happily for the first milk of the season.I stood on the stone walkway above the yard, watching Chief Hakan and two wild wolf trackers haul big sacks of grain into the high granary. My body felt warm inside my heavy wool tunic and silver leather armor, but my mind was focused on the long mountain map spread across the stone ledge in front of me.Steps sounded on the stairs behind me—heavy, steady, and unhurried.Tarek walked up to the ledge, carrying a small wooden tray with two cups of hot pine tea. He set one cup down beside my map and rested his elbows flat against the cold granite wall, looking out at the snowy valley below us."The southern cows are giving f

  • THE LAST BREEDER, CLAIMED BY FOUR   CHAPTER 163

EDALBy late afternoon, the winter sun hung low and orange over the western peaks. The southern border was a hive of quiet, tense activity. True to his word, Lord Vane had agreed to the terms. His men worked on the south bank of the frozen river, driving thirty black-and-white milk cows across the thick ice toward our side. Behind them, two wooden supply carts dumped heavy bars of grey iron and massive bolts of thick wool cloth into the snow near the old border stone.Rylan stood on our side of the river, supervising twelve high guards as they loaded the ten sacks of coarse rye and five barrels of salted fish onto the empty southern sleds. His massive iron frame towered over the thin, tired southern soldiers, but he kept his hands off his weapons, letting the trade proceed without incident.Korr sat atop his warhorse beside me, watching the southern soldiers with hawk-like intensity."They are weak," Korr rumbled low, his silver eyes tracking Lord Vane as the old lord signed the leath

  • THE LAST BREEDER, CLAIMED BY FOUR   CHAPTER 161

EDALThe sun came up cold and bright over the snow.I stood by the armory door in the lower yard. The morning air was quiet. Guards carried heavy wood logs across the yard, and smoke rose from the high stone chimneys. My body felt stiff from the long hunt, but the deep pain in my chest was soft now.Rylan walked out of the main hall carrying a heavy bundle. He wore his thick iron armor and his big wolf fur cloak. In his arms, he held a long piece of dark wood wrapped in clean gray cloth. He walked over to where I stood and stopped. His huge body blocked the cold wind."Korr told the blacksmith to fix this for him last night," Rylan said in his deep, quiet voice. He pulled back the gray cloth.Inside lay a fine iron spear. The dark wood handle was smooth and polished with dry oil. The sharp head was made of bright, heavy iron with clean silver lines running down the middle. It was much stronger than the basic wooden spear Nikolai carried on the high ridge."It is a good weapon," I said

EDALI came with his name on my lips. My back arched off the dirt floor. My thighs shook. My breath came in ragged gasps. I saw white behind my eyes, and for a moment, I forgot he'd thrown me away. Then it was over. I lay there, sweaty and disgusting, my hand still between my legs, my chest heaving

EDALThe night air hit my face Branches scratched my arms. Mud sucked at my boots. My lungs burned. My legs screamed. I didn't stop. I couldn't stop. If I stopped, I'd think about him, and if I thought about him, I'd die.I ran until my body gave out.I collapsed in a ditch … wet and dark and full

EDAL“Look at her, locking herself in like the pathetic little breeder she is.”The words came through the door like needles, sharp and precise, and I pressed my back against the wood so hard I felt the grain bite into my skin.“Did you see her face when Alpha announced Vex as his Luna?” Another vo

EDALThe smell of burned flesh always came first, Smoke and charred skin. It filled my nose, my throat, my lungs. I couldn't breathe or scream. I was nine years old again, hiding under the kitchen table, watching my mother's body break itself apart. Her spine curved backward first with a loud, we
