Emily’s POV

I listened to all the rules as we walked together, our footsteps crunching over gravel and dry leaves. The sky faded from gold to deep purple, casting long shadows over the worn path. A cool, earthy smell lingered in the air, mixed with the faint tang of pine and woodsmoke blowing from somewhere nearby. Crickets started to chirp in the tall grass, and every so often, I caught the distant howl of something wild, echoing through the woods. He showed me the main places he wanted me to know, pointing out the kitchen with its rows of battered pots, the well with its creaking handle, and the shed that smelled faintly of oil and hay. It was getting dark.

Hunter, I said, walking behind him. Why me? Besides the obvious breeding problem.

He stopped. Took my hand. Let’s have dinner, and we will talk before bedtime.

Dinner was good; it was the first time in a long while that I felt full. My stomach didn’t growl.

He took me back to the bedroom, and he started to undress. I turned.

" You can keep your shirt on and take the pants off," he tells me.

I take them off and get in bed, trying not to look his way. He wears boxers. Of course, I looked, and the Goddess must have blessed him with a godlike body.

Would you like to get closer? he asks me. I nod, and his arm grabs my middle and pulls me close. I feel safe with him, for now.

He kisses the top of my head. Now tell me what you want to know? You ask me one question, then I ask you one. Deal?

"Yes. Do you have children?" I ask.

I have a daughter, and the mother left her for me to raise. Her name is Daisy.

Have you ever encountered wolves?

"I did, but… they didn’t see me or smell me," I answer.

"Smell you? I don’t understand," I say.

Oh, I read the guy’s diary, the farm man. He wrote about a plant that repels wolves' smell. I’ve been eating it since then.

What is a mark? like a tattoo?

He laughs. No, silly, it's a mating ritual, usually with a fated mate. But I found you to be that mate. Fated mates are rare for us. They say it's when the Goddess binds two souls together, so the connection is deeper than mere wanting. Being fated means our bond can never be broken, no matter what happens to us. It's not just tradition, it's everything to my kind.

What do you remember from your childhood?

Nothing, sometimes I have some dreams. The last one I had was a nightmare. Someone was chasing me, and I fell down a mountain, rolling in pain. I wake up scared.

"How do you do the ritual? Of marking?" I ask.

Uhhh, you sure you want to know? He asks. I nod. My head is on his chest, listening to his heartbeat. Is picking up the rhythm. During …sex, I bite your neck.

I gasp, sitting up, clutching my neck, his laughter mixing with the thrum of my racing heart. He pulls me down, kissing my lips softly, and warmth swells inside me, flooding my stomach like a rising tide.

My hand grazes his cheek. Hunger trembles in me, craving his touch. But as his hand traces my side, palm cupping my backside, nerves jolt through me, sharp and electric. I'm standing on a precipice, danger and beauty tangled together. His kisses deepen; I drown in newness, breathless and shaken. I ache for him, yet fear the force he holds over me, the helplessness unleashed by a single touch. Does surrendering make me fragile? Or am I braver than I know? I feel his pulse, his want, and wonder, can he sense my trembling, or does this wild current too sweep under him?

I pull away, scared, his eyes open, and look at me.

Emily, I can feel your fear. His hand trembled as he touched my face, voice soft: "Let’s try to sleep."

Hunter, can I say something before I fall asleep? Watch your back, my gut feeling never lies…

Hunter’s POV

Her hand touches my face, and I close my eyes. She is so gentle and soft. My hand slides down her body as my kissing deepens, and I want her so bad. I feel her body trembling. She pulls away, scared.

"Too soon," I think to myself, but my wolf growls in my head. "What is with you?" I ask my wolf.

"She’s a human," I shout at him.

I like her, I like her smell, Pax tells me.

Interesting. Then Emily says something that I didn’t expect. To watch my back, she noticed that even though she was an outsider, she must have felt something towards someone close to me. My brother?

Maybe I’m about to ask her, and she’s asleep. I slide my hands up and down her back. I have blue balls, and I can’t sleep now thinking of all this.

Humans always attack us; the more they kill, the less for them to share. Our pack has good fighters, but bringing humans, I think, also exposes us. Once in a while, we get a rogue, lost from far away, and never trust them ever.

I finally close my eyes, and I see Emily’s beautiful face as I fall asleep.

Her hand hitting my face wakes me up. She’s whimpering and begging, and I try to wake her up. Domus, stop, don’t touch me…stop she screams. I pull her to my chest and whisper in her ear. Finally, she opens her eyes, looking around, still unfocused.

Emily looks at me, and then her arms go around my neck. I’m here. You had a dream.

"He touched me… he touched me…" she cries.

Who is he? I ask gently

I don’t know, Hunter, I’m scared of him.

No one will dare to…she kisses me, and she falls back with me on top of her. Mark me!

  • THE LAST PACK   The last pack

Draven’s POVTime passed fast, and in this life I got to love her and have children. Where did the time go? As I was watching my son through the office window, memories of his childhood flooded my mind. I remembered his first steps, his laughter echoing through these halls, the way he always wanted to be just like me. Twenty-five years had gone by, and now he stood tall, his body built like a warrior, undefeated. Powerful. I felt both pride and a strange ache in my heart, realizing how quickly my children had grown, how each moment had slipped by while I led this pack. Part of me wished I could turn back time, to hold them close again and never let them go.He stopped and turned to chase his sister. Valerie teased him all the time, spoiled, but deep down was humbled and was the shining light of the pack.Emily watched them come towards her. "MOM," Valerie said. "Cadmus is going to hurt me."I wonder why, Valerie. Apologize to your brother. He picked her up over his shoulder and threw

  • THE LAST PACK   Happy

Draven’s POVFour months had passed. Emily was almost due, and each day I felt the anxiety growing heavier, pressing down on my chest. My hands would tremble without warning, cold sweat prickling at the back of my neck even in the quiet moments. Nuber’s voice sounded far away, muffled beneath the constant thrum of worries running through my mind: What if something goes wrong? Am I ready to be a father? What if I fail them both? Nuber was talking, but I didn’t hear a word. My thoughts kept circling back to Emily, to the child. I couldn't focus on anything else.Draven? Draven? I finally looked up at him. What do you think? The last pack was moved into the settlement, completing what we had worked so hard for: the unity of all the wolves under one haven. Humans were no longer allowed to set foot inside, a rule we made after all that happened, to protect our kind from fear, misunderstanding, and past attacks. Bringing the packs together was more than just numbers; it was about building t

  • THE LAST PACK   Blood and forgiveness

Draven’s POVI couldn’t sleep. After everything that happened, I knew the man was powerful. He could build a bridge over the gap and send his beasts to kill us all. My hand went to her belly without thinking.Emily was asleep. I chuckled, covered her, and got dressed. Then I walked outside and saw Nuber standing in the open space between the houses, legs crossed in the grass."Come sit with me. Can’t sleep? Are you worried I’ll attack?"Okay, so he can read minds now, I thought. Well, Nuber, if you were me, what would you think? It doesn’t matter what I think; you need to take care of her and stop sending her away. She is your true mate, and the son she’s giving you will change the course of wolf packs. And how do you know that? I asked, finally sitting next to him in the grass. He leaned in. "I am a seer." I wanted to say something; nothing came out."Now you know my secret. Not even my children know that. Draven, watch over my daughter. Liam isn’t done with her yet. I don’t want he

  • THE LAST PACK   Four lifetimes

Emily’s POVI stared at the man across from me, my father, so he claims. I’ve been betrayed too many times. Trust didn’t come easy to me. So why did my gut, that instinct deep inside me I could never ignore, urge Salem to close the gap in the Earth? It made no sense, unless something stronger than fear or doubt was guiding me. Sometimes it felt like my instincts came from somewhere beyond myself, something ancient and powerful that refused to let me walk away.Draven, I think we all need to talk and send a scout to the pack.It will be too late, trust me. He sighed. What do we call you? Salem askedNumber, or Dad, he chuckled. Standing up, he walked to the edge of the split. He spoke in God's language to the pack. They all shouted in unison,Why do I understand this language? I asked him.Emily, Salem, you should’ve known by now. Goddess blood runs in your veins. It is more than just a birthright or a legend. That blood gives you the power to feel the world stirring beneath your feet,

  • THE LAST PACK   The man on the horse

Emily’s POVThe alarm blared, and I jumped out of bed, got dressed, put on my boots, and ran outside. Draven was running towards me.Scouts said maybe two hours away; we need to be ready. We should’ve fled; maybe I made the wrong decision. But running would mean never facing what hunts us, never owning the power we were given. I knew people depended on me. I cupped his face.Draven, we will die fighting if we have to. These beasts are strong, but Salem and I were gifted. In a past life, Salem tore open the Earth and our enemies vanished into the abyss. I have fire, and he has water; the marks appeared on our skin the day we awakened, bright and strange, each with its own meaning. The way the symbols pulse when we use our gifts, it's like each one holds a different secret. We still haven't figured out what the other symbols do, but we know there's more power waiting for us to unlock. Anyway, I need him to come with me to the open area surrounding the settlement. No way I let you go, Dr

  • THE LAST PACK   Nightmare

Emily’s POVI slapped him hard. My heart was twisted with anger and heartbreak, a storm inside me that I could barely control. How could he put me in this position? Betrayal stung in my chest, but I refused to let it show as weakness. This life I will have one mate, Draven, I shouted.Emily, you can’t deny that you still love me…I won’t deny it, but also I won’t act on it. Now get up; we’re going back. Salem needs me to keep that sea of monsters; his powers won’t work without me.No, he said.Fine, then I will leave alone. Walk with me or stay here and …You wouldn’t dare….I walked out of the barn, feeling the cold air bite at my skin. I heard him groan behind me—he was in pain, but still he followed. The landscape unfurled in front of us, shadowy and endless, and we pressed on. With every step, my legs grew heavier, my feet started to ache until it was like walking over coals. The sky was slowly shifting, black retreating to gray, and exhaustion settled on me as heavily as the morni

  • THE LAST PACK   Human girl

Hunter’s POVMy eyelids were so heavy they felt glued shut, weighed down by sleep and something thicker, as if I was sinking in a warm fog. Slowly, I forced them open. The light in the room was soft, but still it made my eyes sting. It took a while for everything to come into focus: the scratch of

Hunter’s POVI look at her beautiful face, and of course, I want her and mark her. But does she want me?Hunter, her hands cupping my face, I want this…her lips kissing mine softly. • THE LAST PACK   Food

Hunter’s POVWrapping her in the towel, as I tried to control my wolf. Emily was so beautiful, all of her. Innocent and humbled. Why my wolf stirred beats me. After all, she is human, but I think having so many humans, we have lost what a wolf should feel—his mate. I felt so attracted to her, and I

  • THE LAST PACK   Water and bubbles

Hunter’s POVShe was dirty, smelly, and so beautiful. Mine. Finally, something only mine.I was sick and tired of the endless parade of women, whether she-wolf or human, that kept coming to my bed. They were always there, looking for comfort, for something from me, but it never felt right. It was j
