CHAPTER 17 NIGHT TRAINING

ELRIC’S POV

I tried to sleep but sleep refuses to come.

I turn on the bed for the third time, staring at the ceiling like it might give answers. My wolf is restless, pacing, scratching, alert. Ever since today, something feels off.

I finally give up.

The training room lights are dim when I step in. At first, I think I’m alone. Then I hear it. A soft grunt. A shuffle of feet. Controlled breathing.

Mira.

She’s in the middle of the room, hair tied back, sleeves rolled, sweat shining on her skin. She repeats the same move again and again, turn, step, strike, miss and reset.

She doesn’t see me.

I lean against the wall, watching her carefully.

She messes up the angle again. Her shoulders tense in frustration. She mutters something under her breath I can’t catch. Then she goes again.

My chest tightens.

Three days. She’s pushing herself like she has none.

I walk closer, slow, quiet. She spins suddenly, blade coming up fast. I catch her wrist easily.

“Careful,” I say.
