เข้าสู่ระบบCHAPTER 55THE MAN IN THE TREES CORVIN’S POVI watched my daughter look for me.Most carriers never learn to sense another this fast. I stood at the tree line for eleven minutes before she turned her head toward me, and even then, she only caught a shape in the dark, not a face. Eleven minutes was still faster than I expected. Her mother never had that kind of instinct. Neither did the woman who raised Wren for me, feeding her lies about a hidden order, a dead bloodline, a brother who’d come find her one day. All true, in their own twisted way. I’ve always found the best lies are built from real bones.I stepped back into the trees once the guards started shouting. No reason to give them a clean shot yet.Behind me, my second in command waited with the bow still slung over his shoulder, the same one that had put an arrow through Elaine’s chest twenty minutes earlier.“Clean kill,” he said.“I know,” I said. “I watched.”He didn’t ask why I wanted her dead instead of kept. Good men d
CHAPTER 54RIGHT OUTSIDE THE WALLS ELENA’S POVEveryone moved at the same time.“Get her inside,” Xander said, pointing at Wren. Two guards grabbed her arms and pulled her back through the gates before she could argue.“Seal the perimeter,” Marcus shouted, already running toward the guard towers. “Full lockdown. Nobody in or out.”I stood over Elaine’s body for one more second. The arrow hadn’t moved. Her eyes were still open, staring up at nothing.“Elena.” Xander’s hand found my shoulder. “Inside. Now.”“I’m not running from him,” I said.“I’m not asking you to run. I’m asking you to think.” His eyes were hard, focused, the same look he got right before a fight. “If he’s close enough to make that shot, he’s close enough to make another one. I’m not losing you standing in the open arguing about it.”I hated that he was right. I moved. We got behind the wall just as the towers lit up, torches blazing along the top of the gate, warriors scrambling into position. Caleb climbed the ladd
CHAPTER 53WHAT SHE DESERVES ELENA’S POVElaine sat in the corner of the healer’s wing, wrapped in a blanket, drinking water like she hadn’t had any in days. I stood in the doorway and watched her hands shake around the cup.I didn’t feel sorry for her.“Elena.” Xander’s voice was behind me. “You don’t have to do this.”“I want to,” I said.I walked in as soon as Elaine looked up. Her eyes opened for a second, then settled back for a bit, the same look she used to give me across her son’s dinner table.“You look well,” she said. “Considering everything.”“Don’t talk to me like we’re catching up. DEAR.”She set the cup down. “What do you want, Elena?”I walked across the room fast. My hand connected with her face before I even processed anything. The sound cracked loudly in the small room. Her head snapped sideways. A guard near the door stepped forward, and Xander held up a hand to stop him.Elaine touched her cheek. She didn’t cry… neither did she even look surprised.“You poisoned
CHAPTER 52DAWN AT THE QUARRYXANDER’S POVWren woke up screaming and we didn’t have time to let her finish.“How long until dawn,” I said, already moving, already shouting for Marcus, for horses, for anyone still awake enough to fight.“Two hours,” Caleb said, checking the sky through the window. “Maybe less.”Two hours to save a woman I hated, in a place none of us had ever seen, against a man who could apparently reach into my own sister’s chest from miles away and make her scream on command. Great odds. Love it!!“We’re not handing her over,” Elena said, already pulling on boots, already thinking three steps ahead the way she always did when things got bad enough that panic stopped being useful.“I know,” I said.“Then what’s the plan?”“We go to the quarry. We don’t bring Wren. We bring everyone else, and we take Elaine back the hard way.”“That’s not a plan,” Caleb said. “That’s a suicide run with extra steps dear. Let’s not be foolish.”Everyone gave him the look.“You got a be
CHAPTER 51WRENXANDER’S POVWe rode back in silence. The horses moved steadily under us. Dust rose behind the hooves and settled again. Wren sat straight in the saddle while her hands stayed on the reins. The blue light under her skin had faded to a soft glow that only showed when the moon hit her wrists.Caleb kept his eyes on the dark trees. Talia rode with one hand pressed to the small pouch of silver dust she had gathered. No one spoke until the estate gates came into view. Two guards opened the gates without a word. Elena stood on the steps with her arms crossed. The moment she saw our faces she dropped her arms and came down the steps fast. She stopped in front of Wren first. Her hands rose and hovered near Wren’s shoulders without touching. “You’re still glowing,” Elena said.Wren nodded, “It’s quieter now. It stopped pulling.”Elena turned to me. Her eyes moved over my face, then down to my hands, then back up. She did not ask what happened. She already knew from the way we l
CHAPTER 50 THE SECOND HEARTBEAT XANDER’S POV Caleb let out a laugh, “Great. Fantastic. Love that for us.” “Not helpful,” Elena said, though her hand were on mine without her looking away from Wren. Here’s a thing about my sister I’d learned in less than twenty four hours: she flinched at loud noises, apologized too much for things that weren’t her fault, and had absolutely no idea how brave she actually was. She was sitting up now, pale, sweating, one hand pressed flat against her own chest like she could feel the second pulse from the inside. “It’s warm,” she said quietly. “Not painful. Just, warm. Like something settling in instead of forcing its way through.” “Settling in for what?” I asked. Wren looked up at me, and ever since she’d walked through our gates, I saw something in her face that wasn’t grief or fear or desperate hope. It was recognition. “I think I know where I need to go,” she said. “No,” I said immediately. “Xander.” “No. We just decided we’re not walkin
