A Hollow Victory

Alpha Kirill Rostov

The wooden token flared with a final, sickening burst of green flame before crumbling into cold grey ash on the hearthstone. Eight hundred miles away, across the frozen expanse of the Siberian waste, the dark spiritual tether I had forced through the flames severed with a sharp, violent snap.

A sudden, agonizing phantom spike hammered directly into the center of my chest.

I choked on a breath, my fingers digging into the edge of the carved oak mantle in the High Hall of the North Ridge. The agony wasn't physical; it was a deep, hollow tearing deep within my marrow, an instinctual phantom ache that made my wolf howl in frantic, frustrated confusion.

It was the lingering ghost of the blood-bond I had tried to destroy. The bond to Slava.

"Kirill?"

A soft, honeyed voice cut through the heavy silence of the hall. Silk rustled softly over the polished floorboards behind me as Yevgeniya stepped out of the amber shadow cast by the iron braziers.

She looked magnificent. Her ivory gown was trimmed with northern fox fur, perfectly fitting the curves of her hips, and her dark hair fell in artful waves down her pale back. The glowing runic charm her father had bought her pulsed gently on her slender wrist, marking her as the most political, lucrative match the North Ridge had secured in three generations.

She stepped close, her delicate, manicured hands sliding over my broad shoulders. Her fingers traced down the thick muscle of my chest, her touch light, practiced, and intoxicating.

"The elders are waiting in the banqueting hall, my love," Eva whispered, leaning up to press her soft, velvet lips against the angle of my jaw. "They are raising their goblets to our union. To the new Alpha and his Luna."

I turned slowly in her hold, catching her waist, pulling her flush against my thighs. She let out a soft, breathless giggle, her silver-grey eyes sparkling with triumphant heat as she wrapped her slender arms around my neck.

I looked down at her face. She was everything an Alpha was supposed to desire—wealthy, high-born, beautiful, and completely willing to yield to my dominance.

Yet as my hands pressed into her waist, a cold, sickening numbness settled in my gut.

When I looked into Eva's eyes, I didn't see fire. I didn't feel the dangerous, electric static that used to make the tiny hairs on my arms stand on end whenever I walked past the dark cellar steps. My mind, treacherous and unbidden, dragged up the vivid image of Slava—the way her silver-grey eyes had burned with pure, unyielding defiance even when I had stripped her of her coat in the blizzard; the way her bare skin had glowed with that terrifying, radiant crimson aura when her true Alpha blood tore through eighteen years of poison.

I had thrown away a floor-scrubber, expecting to feel relief. Instead, every breath I took without her in this hall felt hollow, like drinking water that never quenched a burning thirst.

"Kirill," Eva murmured, her dark lashes fluttering as her hands slid down my chest to the buckle of my leather belt. Her touch grew bolder, her fingers deftly loosening the steel clasp, her knee sliding between my legs to press against my inner thigh. "Forget the elders for a moment. Celebrate with me first."

The explicit, slow-burning heat in her gaze was obvious. She wanted me to claim her right here against the hearthstone, to prove that our union was absolute.

I grabbed her hips, my large, calloused hands gripping her fiercely through the silk. I spun her around, pressing her back against the heavy carved oak table in the center of the hall. Eva gasped, a soft, needy sound escaping her throat as her back arched over the polished wood, her silk dress riding up her thighs as her legs opened for me.

I stepped between her parted knees, my heavy body crowding over hers. I leaned down, burying my face in the curve of her neck, my mouth claiming hers in a hard, bruising kiss.

She tasted of sweet wine and expensive perfumed oils. She opened for me completely, her fingers tangling frantically in my hair, her hips rising to meet mine as I pressed the heavy ridge of my length firmly against her core through our clothes.

It was raw. It was intense. Eva whimpered beneath me, her breath hitching in shallow, desperate gasps as my hand slid beneath her silk skirt, my fingers tracing the smooth skin of her inner thigh, pushing higher until I felt the slick, scorching heat waiting for me.

"Yes, Alpha..." Eva gasped into my mouth, her nails digging into my shoulders. "Take me... show me I am your Luna..."

I closed my eyes, driving my hips forward into hers.

And in that split second of blinding friction, as her soft whimper filled the silent hall, my mind didn't see Eva beneath me.

My soul saw Slava.

I saw Slava pinned beneath the Lycan Tsar in his obsidian fortress. I saw her silver-black hair floating around her shoulders, her pale skin flushed with heat, her lips parted in a breathless gasp as Vaelin Volkov’s broad hands mapped the curves of her hips. The thought of another male touching her—of the Tsar’s broad chest pressing against her bare breasts, of his mouth claiming the neck I had left unblemished—sent a wave of dark, agonizing fury ripping through my chest.

My wolf let out a sudden, violent snarl deep in my throat.

I froze mid-thrust. My hand abruptly pulled back from beneath Eva's skirt, my breathing heavy, ragged, and bitter.

Eva opened her eyes, her lips swollen, her face flushed with unfulfilled desire. Shock and confusion clouded her features as she looked up at me. "Kirill? What... what is wrong?"

I straightened up slowly, my jaw clenched so hard the muscles in my face throbbed. I adjusted my leather belt, stepping back from the table, leaving her flushed and disheveled on the polished oak.

"The elders are waiting," I said, my voice cold, flat, and devoid of the heat that had filled the air moments before. "We should not keep them."

Eva’s face hardened, hurt and sharp humiliation flashing across her delicate features before she quickly pulled her dress down, adjusting her furs with trembling fingers. "You're thinking about her," she hissed, her voice laced with venom. "You're thinking about that useless, half-frozen Omega!"

"Watch your tongue, Eva," I growled, my golden Alpha eyes flashing with a dangerous, lethal warning that made her step back.

"She is dead, Kirill!" Eva cried softly, her hands clenching into fists at her sides. "She froze in the Blood Forest days ago! The Tsar took her corpse as a trophy! Why do you keep looking at the door like she's going to walk back through it?"

I didn't answer her. I couldn't.

Because deep in my marrow, beneath the bitter pride and the political lies, I knew the truth. Slava wasn't dead. The blood-token had proven it. Her pulse was beating louder, stronger, and more terrifying than it ever had when she was sweeping my floors.

I turned my back on my new bride and walked toward the heavy arched windows overlooking the snowy courtyard. The blizzard outside was howling, driving white sheets of ice against the iron frames.

As I stared into the dark storm, a sudden, cold shudder ran down my spine.

The heavy iron doors at the front gate of the packhouse didn't burst open—they began to groan.

A thick, pitch-black frost began to crawl across the bottom of the glass, creeping upward in delicate, jagged spiderwebs. The iron braziers lighting the hall flickered wildly, their orange flames turning a sickly, pale silver.

From the dark tree line beyond the perimeter wall, a low, unnatural horn echoed through the mountain valley—a sound that hadn't been heard in the North Ridge for three hundred years.

Matrena rushed into the hall, her blind, milky eyes wide with terror, her wooden staff rattling against the flagstones.

"Kirill!" the old woman screamed, her voice cracking with sheer dread. "The ancient boundary stones are bleeding! The Blood Alpha's awakening has shattered our ancestral shields... and the feral hordes are already inside the lower village!"

  • THE LYCAN TSAR’S REJECTED CROWN   Against the Rack

Bronislava “Slava” IgnatovaThe knock came again before we had put our clothes on straight.Once. Slow. From under our feet.Vaelin’s hand left my hip. The gold in his eyes went flat and lethal. He fastened his trousers, threw my shirt at me, and we took the service stair down into the mountain without speaking. The weapon vaults sat behind a door of black iron and bone wards. The ward should have been asleep. It was humming, low, like a throat that had just finished a word.He put his palm to the lock. It recognized him and still hesitated, as if something else had touched it first. Then it gave.Cold air rolled out. Oil. Steel. Old blood baked into stone. Rows of racks ran into the dark, swords and spears and hooked Siberian axes standing like a silent court. No one inside. No footprints in the dust except the ones we were about to make.“Stay behind my left shoulder,” he said.“I passed your last test.”“This is not a test.”We walked the center aisle. My new daggers sat upstairs o

Bronislava “Slava” IgnatovaThe bells were still shaking the stone when I dragged my leathers back on.Vaelin was already at the window, bare to the waist, the runes on his back lit like banked coals. Below us the inner court moved in practiced lines. No breach. No smoke. Only the winter alarm and that wrong cold still sitting behind my teeth.“It is not at our wall,” he said without turning. “Not yet.”“I heard my name.” I hated how thin it came out. “Not yours. Mine. The way she used to say it when I was small and sick.”He looked at me then. Gold ringed the amber. He crossed the room, took my face in both hands, and pressed his mouth to my forehead hard enough to hurt. Not romance. A seal.“Whatever reached you is old blood work. You will learn to shut the door. That starts tonight.”He did not ask if I wanted the lesson. I would have said yes anyway. The war library sat three levels under the observatory, a long vault of oak tables and iron shelves that smelled of dust, lamp oil,

Bronislava “Slava” IgnatovaThe cold hit me between one breath and the next. Not the Ural wind. I knew that one. This came from inside the bone, a thin white needle behind my eyes, and with it a mouth I had not heard in three years saying my full name like a curse and a lullaby at once.Bronislava.My knee buckled on the training stone. Vaelin’s practice blade was already coming. I dropped under it late. The flat of the steel kissed my ribs hard enough to steal air. I hit the frost and rolled, tasting iron.He did not ask if I was hurt. He never did when we were on the circle. That was the rule I had demanded. Equals do not pause for softness until the bout is done.“Again,” I said. His amber eyes narrowed. He had felt the hitch. Of course he had. The bond between us was a live wire under the skin. I shoved the faraway voice into a locked room and came up on the balls of my feet.We moved.Three years of this floor. Three years of him teaching me how not to die pretty. I was leaner no

Matrena DanilovaKirill’s blade kissed the hollow of my throat and I almost laughed. Almost. The steel was warm from his palm. Boy heat. Pack heat. The same heat I had rocked to sleep when he was small enough to fit against my ribs.I pulled the hood back myself. No trembling. The moonlight found my eyes and I let him look. Let him search for the priestess who braided his sister’s hair and blessed his first kill. She was not there. I had buried her years ago under silver and wolfsbane and the smell of Slava’s dying parents.“You fought bravely tonight, my Alpha.” My voice came out doubled, the old tongue riding under the human one like a second pulse. “But the wolves at your gate were never meant to conquer your fortress. They were only meant to keep you busy while I opened the door.”The token in my fist was still wet. Black blood hissed when it hit the stone. His nostrils flared. His wolf shoved forward so hard his pupils blew wide. I felt the animal’s confusion like a hand on my ch

  • THE LYCAN TSAR’S REJECTED CROWN   Drawn to the High Cliffs

Alpha Kirill Rostov The iron war horns groaned across the valley, their brassy resonance shuddering through the freezing stone beneath my boots. Below the ramparts, the red eyes multiplied. Dozens became scores, a crimson tide rising out of the snowdrifts, moving with an eerie, silent precision that made the hair on my arms stand up. "Form up on me!" I roared, my Alpha command slamming into the ears of every warrior in the inner courtyard. I didn't wait for the heavy timber gates to swing fully open. The moment the gap widened enough for a single body, I threw myself through it, my boots churning through the deep, blood stained powder. Behind me, thirty of my elite vanguard surged into the night, steel drawn, teeth bare, their inner wolves snarling for slaughter. The cold air hit my throat like crushed glass, but the heat of my rage kept my blood boiling. We hit the front line of the rogue assault three hundred paces from the lower village boundary. CLANG! My broadsword met

  • THE LYCAN TSAR’S REJECTED CROWN   A Calculated Siege

Alpha Kirill RostovThe smell of burning grain was bitter, sour, and suffocating.I stood on the stone rampart of the southern watchtower, my heavy wolf-skin cloak whipping violently in the sub-zero gale. Below me, in the snow-choked valley where the pack’s main winter storehouses stood, column after column of black, greasy smoke billowed into the dark night sky.Three years of harvested rye, dried meat, and salted fish—the only buffer keeping three thousand North Ridge pack members alive through the arctic freeze—were turning to ash before my eyes."Report!" I growled, my voice a deep, vibrating thunder that made the young sentry beside me drop to his knees in the ice."Alpha... it was a coordinated strike," the guard stammered, his teeth chattering as his breath bloomed in white clouds. "They didn't come through the main pass. A dozen rogues slipped through the frozen riverbed at midnight. They breached the perimeter wards using blood-anchors, doused the grain silos with pitch, and
